apr_ vs. switch_ namespace questions
by Michael Collins 09 Nov '07

09 Nov '07

Guys, bkw gave me some homework and now I have a few questions. I notice that in switch-types.h there are all sorts of typedef struct statements that create a switch_ version of the corresponding apr_ type. However, I've also noticed that scattered throughout the source that there are numerous occasions where the apr_ namespace is used even when there is a switch_ equivalent available. Example: using apr_pool_t instead of switch_memory_pool_t in mod_openmrcp.c. Questions: Is it FS standard policy/best practices always to use the switch_ namespace? Are there legitimate situations where one would prefer apr_ instead of switch_? Thanks, MC P.S. - If there are cases where apr_ is used when there are switch_ equivalents, does that mean there is an impending codebase cleanup project to make everything consistent?

Re: [Freeswitch-dev] Linux or Windows?

Another consideration is that since our code is cross-platform, it has to have an abstraction layer to normalize some bits of code to be platform agnostic. One major issue with this is that oftentimes, when a function that is commonly used in UNIX is missing in windows, a poor substitute is written to fill in the void. This can lead to assumptions that it's robust when it isn't in the case of things like precision timing (many gettimeofday emulator functions are completely inaccurate and give the impression that the windows is not as good). We do our best to make sure we have it working on all platforms but to really succeed, we need the help of many people who regularly use each platform to test and provide feedback about their favorite platform. For a high scale operation any variant of UNIX will be a better choice than windows from at least a cost standpoint since the version of windows that can take advantage of several CPUs is much more expensive than the regular version of windows and also if you plan to do any development, the free version of the compiler is not really so great so you will end up having to buy the MSVC 2008 as well. The most common used platform during core development is currently rhel4 iirc which is more or less the same as centos4 the only reason for that choice is the particular dual-cpu box with onboard RAID I do my dev on only worked for RHEL due to silly binary drivers where something claims they support linux and only gives you a redhat rpm (but that's another rant). Nonetheless, we move around and test the code on all platforms we support, *but*, linux currently still receives the most total hours of dev time to date. We do have many Windows users, so maybe they could chime in about how the Win32 experience is going for them. OpenZAP/Q.931 question
by Michael Collins 05 Nov '07

05 Nov '07

This one's probably for MikeJ... I am testing out the PRI on OpenZAP. My carrier doesn't support DMS100 so I'm using an Asterisk box to act as my telco. I'm set up on Asterisk with pri_net signaling in Zapata.conf, using the 24th channel as the D channel. I'm pretty sure that the D channels are communicating because I'm getting an error on the actual data sent. Here's what I see when I start up FS: 2007-11-02 22:39:46 [DEBUG] zap_isdn.c:223 zap_isdn_921_23() READ 13 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------- [08 02 00 00 46 18 03 a9 83 82 79 01 80] 2007-11-02 22:39:46 [DEBUG] zap_isdn.c:227 zap_isdn_921_23() 931 parse error [-3012] [Q931E_INVALID_CRV] If I read my Q931 specs properly, the data being sent over in this case is a RESTART (the 46 in 5th octet). Question: does the parse error indicate a setup issue or do you think possibly that Asterisk isn't necessarily a good way to emulate a telco PRI circuit? On a DMS100, what would the proper RESTART string look like coming from telco? Thanks, MC

No, Thank you for taking the time to play with it. We made OpenZAP last May from scratch in a 30 day span which you can see in thise nearly vertical burst of code lines in the repo. http://fisheye.freeswitch.org/browse/OpenZAP Since then we have had little input, so, I have all the patience in the world for you since you are one of the pioneers of this new sector of our work and we can't get very far without someone to test and provide feedback. I didn’t read my own friggin’ configs. After some researching I figured out that I had my spans 3 and 4 flip-flopped in the openzap configuration. The actual configuration of my systems is as follows: FS Box Asterisk Box Span 1 <--+ T1 Span 1 N/C | X-Over Span 2 <–-+ Cable Span 2 N/C Span 3 <--T1 X-over--> Span 3 (PRI, DMS, Asterisk = pri_net) Span 4 <--T1 X-over--> Span 4 (??? – possible PRI) To make a long story short, my first email was stupid. I was trying to make my span 4 be a PRI when the zaptel was configured as plain-Jane T1 w/ fxsks signaling and then talking to who knows what on the * side (my LAN conn is still down so I honestly don’t know what’s up on that span, although when I configured span 4 to be clear channel I did receive goofy ring signals on channel 24 which suggests some sort of PRI on the * side, so I’ve got a temp PRI setup on span 4 right now…). I configured span 3 to be PRI and I got all sorts of cool and interesting D-channel messages. My modified configs are below, including my zaptel.conf, which I should have looked at first! (kicking myself in the head…) Also, I believe my conclusion about the span id settings in openzap.conf.xml is probably wrong as well. I set up only span 3 for testing and left it with when it was the only one configured in XML and it came up like a champ. Thanks for your patience. I’ll keep testing and report back with more information and better researched questions in a few days. -MC /etc/zaptel.conf: ## Test FreeSWITCH/OpenZAP config span=1,0,0,esf,b8zs # FS back-to-back "Network" fxoks=1-24 span=2,1,0,esf,b8zs # FS back-to-back "CPE" fxsks=25-48 span=3,1,0,esf,b8zs # Asterisk back-to-back PRI (I am CPE) bchan=49-71 dchan=72 span=4,1,0,esf,b8zs # Asterisk back-to-back PRI (I am CPE) bchan=73-95 dchan=96 # Global data loadzone = us defaultzone = us /etc/openzap/openzap.conf: [span zt] name => OpenZAP number => 1 trunk_type => t1 b-channel => 1-24 [span zt] name => OpenZAP number => 2 trunk_type => t1 b-channel => 25-48 [span zt] name => OpenZAP number => 3 trunk_type => t1 b-channel => 49-71 d-channel => 72 [span zt] name => OpenZAP number => 4 trunk_type => t1 b-channel => 73-95 d-channel => 96 openzap.conf.xml: <configuration name="openzap.conf" description="OpenZAP Configuration"> <settings> <param name="debug" value="1"/> </settings> <analog_spans> <param name="dialplan" value="XML"/> <param name="context" value="default"/> <param name="dialplan" value="XML"/> <param name="context" value="default"/> </analog_spans> <pri_spans> <param name="mode" value="user"/> <param name="dialect" value="DMS"/> <param name="dialplan" value="XML"/> <param name="context" value="default"/> <param name="mode" value="user"/> <param name="dialect" value="DMS"/> <param name="dialplan" value="XML"/> <param name="context" value="default"/> </pri_spans> </configuration> From: freeswitch-dev-bounces(a)lists.freeswitch.org [mailto:freeswitch-dev-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org] On Behalf Of Michael Collins Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2007 11:32 PM To: freeswitch-dev(a)lists.freeswitch.org Subject: [Freeswitch-dev] INFO: Update on Mikey's OpenZAP experimenting FYI, I have been working with MikeJ on a few OpenZAP issues. Hi, It seems Presence doesn't work on windows or at least there is a special configuration that I am not aware about that. I appreciate if somebody tell me what is wrong in here. Here is the procedures: 1) Sent SIP Subscribe , Request event is = Presence.winfo (Watcher info) 2) Received 202 - Accept. 3) Waited for SIP Notify message. 4) Nothing happened Again 1) Sent SIP Subscribe to add a buddy into my contact list, Request event is = presence. 2) Received 202 -Accept. 3) Waited for SIP Notify message, 4) Nothing happened In another scenario 1) Sent SIP Publish with my status in pidf+xml format 2) Received 202 -Accept. 4) Nothing happened Thanks a lot, Hassan _________________________________________________________________ R U Ready for Windows Live Messenger Beta 8.5?
