mod_conference scalability
by Brian 19 Apr '18

19 Apr '18

Hi, I'm new to FreeSWITCH and I'm testing the scalability of mod_conference to see if it will scale better that other solutions. My scenario is to have one speaker, and many listeners (mute). Since I have only one speaker, I was expecting this to scale well because there is no audio mixing required, just send each frame of the single speaker to each listener. Unfortunately, my testing was disappointing, and it didn't scale nearly as well as I'd hoped (based on what I've read on how FreeSWITCH is supposed to be generally very scalable). Here's my server setup is this: FreeSWITCH 1.0.4, 64 bit CentOS 5.3, on a quad-core Xeon server, 4 Gig of RAM. I've set file logging to "notice" level. My conference profile is configured to suppress several events, hoping that it would improve performance. Here are a few scenarios I tested, and roughly where I reached the point of audio failure on the conferences: Scenario 1: 1 conference, 1 speaker, audio failed at approx 300 listeners (mute) Scenario 2: 4 conferences, 1 speaker per conference, audio failed approx 110 listeners per conference (so just over 400 total channels on the system). Scenario 3: 16 conferences, 1 speaker per conference, audio failed at 32 listeners per conference (so just over 500 total channels on the system). Looking at the output from "top", it seems that in all 3 scenarios, the audio quality failed when the % CPU for the FreeSWITCH process exceeded 300%. I was hoping maybe someone else might have done similar testing, or maybe has suggestions on how to improve the performance. Or perhaps an alternate solution to the one speaker, many listener case? Thanks, Brian.

FS6947 - Tuning Opus bandwidth
by Emrah 26 Oct '16

26 Oct '16

Hi list, I re-read FS6947 and don't understand how this problematic was addressed and the issue fixed. The scope is simple. There should be a setting in the dialplan that allows downsampling of Opus for applications that do not require the 48khz / 2 channels framework. I.e.: terminating to the PSTN with Opus to take advantage of low bandwidth and great PLC. There seems to be a lot of confusion around bandwidth in general there. It doesn't matter if the internal clock of the device is always sampling at 48khz / 2ch. There are settings that can facilitate a lower bandwidth consumption for particular use cases, and it seems the reason it is not being implemented in FS is just a matter of being confused about the intent of the 48khz 2ch base. Please revisit this issue. FS should allow tuning of Opus audio / network bandwidth in the dialplan. It would optimize greatly lots of use cases. If I'm calling the PSTN, I'd rather have my client downsample and stream at a lower bandwidth, even if my audio capture would still be at 48khz / 2ch as per the RFC, and save on bandwidth, than transcode the full 48khz spectrum into PCM on my FS and minimize processing power on the client's side. Capturing the Current Call Audio
by Leonardo Lima Ribeiro 13 Oct '16

13 Oct '16

Hi! I’m tying to capture the current call audio but I have no idea on how to do that. My main achievement is to get the current call audio and them stream this audio bytes to an API via HTTP Post. I was doing some tries with mod_shout and mod_vlc, and I was successful in the streaming part - I tested some wavs and mp3 files. But the mainly part is that I need the current call audio, and it has no file in the system to stream right? I was thinking if there’s a command that I can get the audio bytes from the current call but I really don’t know, I could not find any option like that. Could you please help me? Thank you, Leonardo Ribeiro

Kernel Hyperthreading ON or OFF?
by Raimund Sacherer 06 Oct '16

06 Oct '16

Hi, we have a new Freeswitch cluster with Dell R410. It has 2 CPUs (Xeon E5620, QuadCore. it's 8 cores withouth HT and 16 cores with HT. I googled with hyperthreading and freeswitch but some say turn it on it will give you a boost, others say turn it off, you will gain performance. Does anyone know if it's better to leave it on or turn it off? And some small explanation? I would be very gratefull for your help, best regards Raimund --

Sharing presence between FS boxes
by Chris B. Ware 04 Jun '16

04 Jun '16

Hi, On advice by Brian and Anthony I'm writing to mailing list, after a jira (FS-6358). If I have two Freeswitch servers, sharing the same DB as backend, how should I configure presence such that if a phone send SUBSCRIBE to box A, and call is received on box B, I get Notify from box B? By now I've set manage_presence=true on both sip profiles (internal,external) and presence_hosts="_DISABLED_" as I read on wiki. Of course dial_string contains presence_id=${dialed_user}@${dialed_domain}. Sip registrations are correctly shared between boxes, and even presence works sometimes, but is not stable. Here my internal sip profiles config: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?> <document type="freeswitch/xml"> <section name="configuration" description="Various Configuration"> <configuration name="sofia.conf" description="Sofia Endpoint"> <profiles> <profile name="internal"> <domains> <domain name="all" alias="true" parse="false"/> </domains> <settings> <param name="debug" value="0"/> <param name="sip-trace" value="no"/> <param name="sip-capture" value="no"/> <param name="watchdog-enabled" value="no"/> <param name="watchdog-step-timeout" value="30000"/> <param name="watchdog-event-timeout" value="30000"/> <param name="log-auth-failures" value="true"/> <param name="forward-unsolicited-mwi-notify" value="false"/> <param name="context" value="default"/> <param name="rfc2833-pt" value="101"/> <param name="sip-port" value="$${internal_sip_port}"/> <param name="dialplan" value="XML"/> <param name="dtmf-duration" value="2000"/> <param name="inbound-codec-prefs" value="$${global_codec_prefs}"/> <param name="outbound-codec-prefs" value="$${global_codec_prefs}"/> <param name="rtp-timer-name" value="soft"/> <param name="rtp-ip" value="$${local_ip_v4}"/> <param name="sip-ip" value="$${local_ip_v4}"/> <param name="hold-music" value="$${hold_music}"/> <param name="apply-nat-acl" value="nat.auto"/> <param name="apply-inbound-acl" value="domains"/> <param name="local-network-acl" value="localnet.auto"/> <param name="record-path" value="$${recordings_dir}"/> <param name="record-template" value="${caller_id_number}.${target_domain}.${strftime(%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S)}.wav"/> <param name="manage-presence" value="true"/> <param name="inbound-codec-negotiation" value="generous"/> <param name="tls" value="$${internal_ssl_enable}"/> <param name="tls-bind-params" value="transport=tls"/> <param name="tls-sip-port" value="$${internal_tls_port}"/> <param name="tls-cert-dir" value="$${internal_ssl_dir}"/> <param name="tls-version" value="$${sip_tls_version}"/> <param name="nonce-ttl" value="60"/> <param name="auth-calls" value="$${internal_auth_calls}"/> <param name="inbound-reg-force-matching-username" value="true"/> <param name="auth-all-packets" value="false"/> <param name="ext-rtp-ip" value="auto-nat"/> <param name="ext-sip-ip" value="auto-nat"/> <param name="rtp-timeout-sec" value="300"/> <param name="rtp-hold-timeout-sec" value="1800"/> <param name="presence-hosts" value="_DISABLED_"/> <param name="odbc-dsn" value="systemDB:freeswitch:pazzword"/> <param name="challenge-realm" value="auto_from"/> <param name="outbound-proxy" value="sip::5060"/> </settings> </profile> </profiles> </configuration> </section> </document> Can somebody help?

Re: [Freeswitch-users] Presence with shared database
by Adam Kuśmirek 04 Jun '16

04 Jun '16

Hello, Yes we enabled manage-presence. According to documentation dbname is used to share presence between profiles. What we want to achieve is to share presence between hosts. We investigated some presence source code and found that there are sql queries that ask for specific FS host. We modified SELECT statements and UPDATES of version parameter, so they have no host in WHERE clause. After mod_sofia recompilation everything works fine. It seems that the only way to share presence between hosts is to set the same hostname in switch.xml for every FS node, but we cannot do this because we need host information for other services. I wonder why FS checks whether the subscription was made on a host that sets up the connection. Maybe this is a bug in the concept and it should be removed. FreeSWITCH using outbound proxy but to bypass media
by Muhammad Naseer Bhatti 28 May '16

28 May '16

I am trying to use an outbound SIP proxy for FreeSWITCH by adding fs_path to the bridge. It’s working fine and I am able to send calls using the proxy. On the proxy (which is also FreeSWITCH) I am receiving the call in a lua script, create a new session with the destination gateway and bridge two sessions (old, incoming and the newly created) The idea is to have multiple FreeSWITCH servers (all public IP address) originating calls while all calls going to the carrier via the proxy. The problem is that all media is also passing through the proxy. Is there a way I can only send signaling through proxy and media to flow directly between the endpoints? I have tried bypass_media and bypass_media_after_bridge but it’s not working. Is this even doable? Thanks. -- Muhammad Naseer Bhatti
