Dead gateway detection
by David Knell 22 Feb '08

Hi - We've two outbound routes from a FreeSWITCH box, both done purely on IP - no SIP registration or authentication involved apart from by IP. We can route calls to one or the other by adding a Route header to outbound call setups, which works fine. What I can't obviously see how to do is to failover if one of the gateways disappears. Two options that I've come up with: - add some code to fail a call if a 100 Trying isn't received within a short time after sending the initial INVITE, so that it can be routed to the other gateway; - using an external app to periodically send OPTIONS to each gateway, work out which are alive, and route calls appropriately. Have I missed something obvious and straightforward? --Dave -- David Knell, Director, 3C Limited T: 020 8114 8901 F: 020 3002 7257 M: 001 415 630 3031 http://www.3c.co.uk

Especially since our h323 is not even working and requires major overhaul. =D Speaking of, there is a new C interface to opal being developed so we can use it to make a thin client type mod_opal if anyone is interested in working on it with us, let us know. I think most of these who's who/ Top N lists just consist of piping a Google search into a web page and calling it a day. Too bad nobody takes the time to try all these apps and describe them first person instead. It's clearly not even a "top 50" list as the results are just split into categories e.g. Asterisk is #26 just because that's where PBX's start. Let's try to get *every* project represented at this year's ClueCon in August. p.s. Lucky for us, we came up first on google for the composer of this top 74 list ;) http://www.voipnow.org/2007/04/74_open_source_.html Anthony Minessale II FreeSWITCH http://www.freeswitch.org/ ClueCon http://www.cluecon.com/ AIM: anthm MSN:anthony_minessale@hotmail.com GTALK/JABBER/PAYPAL:anthony.minessale@gmail.com IRC: irc.freenode.net #freeswitch FreeSWITCH Developer Conference sip:888@conference.freeswitch.org iax:guest@conference.freeswitch.org/888 googletalk:conf+888@conference.freeswitch.org pstn:213-799-1400 ----- Original Message ---- From: "Sluschny, Thomas" <Thomas.Sluschny(a)siemens.com> To: freeswitch-users(a)lists.freeswitch.org Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2008 2:38:10 AM Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] Top 50 open source voip apps ok, I wrote one too. In the case some of you still didn't read: http://www.virtualhosting.com/blog/2008/wide-open-voip-top-50-open-source-v… There would be better categories to put FreeSWITCH than an h323 client, but anyway. Regards, Arnaldo

I seemed to have sparked a lively debate on this with my initial problem ! , but unfortunately have not had the opportunity to verify that I can resolve the issue by commenting out the driver check and defaulting to Firebird (for me this is fine as I always use Firebird at present), hopefully before close of play today I'll get this tested. Out of interest where does the driver name that is currently being tested for come from, is this from within the driver itself or from an entry in the odbc ini files ? If it succeeds then it is Firebird. A better query might be 'select * from rdb$database' as the system table rdb$database only ever has 1 record. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jonas Gauffin To: freeswitch-users(a)lists.freeswitch.org Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 12:18 PM Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] Spidermonkey ODBC I''ve only tested it with firebird on windows. As you said, your driver name doesnt match any of the names I used to detect if it's firebird. The problem is that most databases supports "SELECT 1" as a query. It will always be successful if the the connection is up. However, firebird did not support "SELECT 1" and therefore i did query the system database instead. If the firebird check fails, it will try to invoke "SELECT 1", and on firebird that query will fail. And the failure is interpreted as the connection is down, and therefore it tries to reconnect. That's probably why you get that error. If you have any other idea on how I can detect if it's a firebird db, please let me know and i'll fix the odbc code. On Feb 19, 2008 1:05 PM, David Revill <davidrevill(a)datarun.co.uk> wrote: That's a fair point, but db_is_up is only called in 2 places and the attempted re-connect could be done if the exec'd query fails. That way it would not be dependant on the name of the driver. In my application, the database was queried at the beginning of the script and the connection closed. It was explicitly re-connected at the end to post data, so the connection timeout was not an issue. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jonas Gauffin To: freeswitch-users(a)lists.freeswitch.org Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:35 AM Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] Spidermonkey ODBC I did that code a couple of months ago. The function was added since connections are closed if they are idle too long, and they were not reconnected again if that happened. On Feb 19, 2008 11:22 AM, David Revill <davidrevill(a)datarun.co.uk> wrote: The problem is in switch_odbc.c function db_is_up. It assumes that the variable is_firebird is true, but the setting of this variable assumes that the Firebird driver name has 'FIREBIRD', 'FB64' or 'FB32' in it. I commented out the code in db_is_up and just returned a true value, as on closer inspection could not see the point of this function. I have since archived the project so cannot point you to the actual code. However, the problem is that it assumes the name of the Firebird Driver (FB64?) to set a boolean, so that it handle the connection test differently. When looking at the actual code, I actually felt that the connection test was redundant, as all it did was a select from a system table. This meant it was doing two queries for everyone required. (One to see if it could do a query, and then one to do it). I therefore commented the connection test function out. regards David Revill ----- Original Message ----- From: Steven Brown To: freeswitch-users(a)lists.freeswitch.org Sent: Monday, February 18, 2008 11:34 PM Subject: [Freeswitch-users] Spidermonkey ODBC Hi, I'm experimenting with spidermonkey for JavaScript call control, the basics seem fine and I'm now trying to connect to an existing Firebird database, the Firebird odbc lib is installed ok as is unixODBC and I can confirm this and access the db no problem with isql, something strange happens though when I connect in spidermonkey, basically the odbc connection is made successfully, but then as soon as I call either exec or query the odbc connection starts to drop and re-connect continuously, the isql output is below isql -v test +---------------------------------------+ | Connected! | | | | sql-statement | | help [tablename] | | quit | | | +---------------------------------------+ SQL> select first 1 * from pool_phones +---------------------+------------+ | GSMNO | ORGNO | +---------------------+------------+ | 0712345678 | 1 | +---------------------+------------+ SQLRowCount returns 1 1 rows fetched SQL> however the following test code calling the same query use("ODBC"); var db = new ODBC("test","SYSDBA","masterkey"); db.connect(); db.query("select first 1 * from pool_phones"); db.nextRow(); row = db.getData(); console_log("INFO","HELLO " + row["GSMNO"] + "\n"); exit(); gives the following output and then just loops disconnecting and reconnecting until I shutdown freeswitch 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] switch_core_state_machine.c:144 switch_core_standard_on_execute() sofia/default/1000@192.168.0.7:5060 Execute javascript(/usr/scripts/test1.js) 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] mod_spidermonkey.c:3150 js_api_use() Loading ODBC 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] switch_odbc.c:145 switch_odbc_handle_connect() Connecting test 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] switch_odbc.c:174 switch_odbc_handle_connect() Connected to [test] 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] switch_odbc.c:95 switch_odbc_handle_disconnect() Disconnected 0 from [test] 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] switch_odbc.c:142 switch_odbc_handle_connect() Re-connecting test 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] switch_odbc.c:145 switch_odbc_handle_connect() Connecting test 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [DEBUG] switch_odbc.c:174 switch_odbc_handle_connect() Connected to [test] 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [CRIT] switch_odbc.c:234 db_is_up() The sql server is not responding for DSN test [] 2008-02-18 23:26:03 [INFO] switch_odbc.c:239 db_is_up() The connection has been re-established ... FreeSwitch on WinXP
by Brian Young ARA/CFD 19 Feb '08

I am running WinXP SP2, built latest trunk (rev 7602) with VS2005. I get a very similar error to a post I found from October 2007 ([Freeswitch-users] FeeSwitch doesn't start on windows 2003 Hassan Firouzbakht). The thread indicates that issue was resolved though. This is my first time using FreeSwitch (or any voip app for that matter) so it may be I am missing something. I am using the default config (havent yet modified anything from conf/*). I simply built the FreeSwitchConsole project. Pls advise if there are required setup steps. This page (http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Getting_Started_Guide) has a section labelled "Preprocessor Variables" which says to update the sip profile, but best I can gather that is now autodetected. Pls verify. ------------ Here is my stdout: D:\Projects\EMST\VOIP\Freeswitch\trunk\debug>FreeSwitch.exe Error including D:\Projects\EMST\VOIP\Freeswitch\trunk\debug\conf\dialplan\extensions/*. xml Error including D:\Projects\EMST\VOIP\Freeswitch\trunk\debug\conf\lang/*/*.xml WARNING: no real random source present! 2008-02-13 22:23:50 [CONSOLE] switch_core.c:904 switch_core_init_and_modload() Bringing up environment. 2008-02-13 22:23:50 [CONSOLE] switch_core.c:905 switch_core_init_and_modload() Loading Modules. 2008-02-13 22:23:50 [CONSOLE] switch_loadable_module.c:749 switch_loadable_module_load_file() Successfully Loaded [softtimer] ------------ Here is stacktrace from the debugger: > FreeSwitch.dll!switch_hash_this(HashElem * hi=0xf2200000, const void * * key=0x00000000, int * klen=0x00000000, void * * val=0x0012f48c) Line 148 + 0x6 bytes C FreeSwitch.dll!switch_loadable_module_runtime() Line 114 C FreeSwitch.dll!switch_loadable_module_init() Line 1058 C FreeSwitch.dll!switch_core_init_and_modload(switch_core_flag_t flags=SCF_USE_SQL, switch_bool_t console=SWITCH_TRUE, const char * * err=0x0012fe20) Line 906 + 0x5 bytes C FreeSwitch.exe!main(int argc=1, char * * argv=0x008f8fa0) Line 475 + 0x23 bytes C FreeSwitch.exe!__tmainCRTStartup() Line 597 + 0x19 bytes C FreeSwitch.exe!mainCRTStartup() Line 414 C kernel32.dll!7c816fd7() [Frames below may be incorrect and/or missing, no symbols loaded for kernel32.dll] ------------ I have noticed a very strange phenomena. ATTENTION: Codec Module Changes applies to EVERYONE!
by Brian West 19 Feb '08

19 Feb '08

FreeSWITCHers, Today we removed mod_g711, mod_g722, mod_g726, mod_gsm and mod_l16, g711 and l16 were moved into the core but still use the loadable module interface because without these two you can't do anything. We now have mod_voipcodecs which covers G722, G726, GSM, IMA_ADPCM and LPC10. Changes would need to be made to your config files that are currently installed. 1. modules.conf in your source directory will need these changes: Remove: codecs/mod_l16 codecs/mod_gsm codecs/mod_g722 codecs/mod_g711 codecs/mod_g726 Add: codecs/mod_voipcodecs 2. modules.conf.xml in your prefix/conf/autoload_configs will need to be changed also: Remove: <load module="mod_l16"/> <load module="mod_gsm"/> <load module="mod_g722"/> <load module="mod_g711"/> <load module="mod_g726"/> Add: <load module="mod_voipcodecs"/> With this change we have gained working LPC10 @ 90ms and DVI4 (IMA_ADPCM) at 8k and 16k. Thanks, Brian West FreeSWITCH.org PS: please do not reply ALL to this email ;)

Initial build -> SIP not registering [RESOLVED]
by C. Mylonas (Mr VoIP) 18 Feb '08

18 Feb '08

After dropping out of the IRC channel I thought my 403 - Forbidden was possibly a NAT issue, so I unhooked my modem. Turns out: Firstly: I had the wrong password (must be cos it was after midnight) Secondly: With the correct password, it was looping (i had sip_trace set to on). I changed the port number in x-lite (softphone used for testing) to 5070 and then it was no dramas - it worked. Thanks to the people on #freenode for helping me out on my first steps to mass scalability! Chris - (zirtron)

Ideas needed for IVR phrases or other sounds for FreeSWITCH
by Michael Collins 17 Feb '08

17 Feb '08

FYI, We are soliciting ideas for sound prompts that need to be recorded. Please post any phrases you think would be nice to have in FS. As an example, we are working on sample IVR phrases, like for the demo IVR’s in ivr.conf.xml as well as some sort of message like, "Congratulations! Your FreeSWITCH installation is operational and will remain that way as long as no Asterisk source code is introduced…" Or something like that! ☺ Please offer your suggestions… Thanks, Mercutioviz
