As I am the one primarily responsible for creating the Rosette Stone page I feel compelled to respond. I agree with Anthony. The wiki does *not* presume that its readers have Asterisk experience. In fact, this is the very reason that the Rosetta Stone page was created. That being said, there are scattered references to Asterisk. How can there not be? Asterisk is one of several reference points for FS. It is probably the key reference point. Most early adopters of FS have Asterisk experience - or in some cases, battle scars. :) Brian West and I have been kicking around some ideas for a FS book. One key element in writing a book is knowing your target demographic. From my two plus years in the FS community I can tell you that the demographic has started changing. Initially, the vast majority of FS users were Asterisk users. Today that isn't necessarily the case. We are noticing more people who say to us, "I saw FS and Asterisk on a Google search. I think FS looks right for me." In other words we're seeing first-time OSS telephony users and even first-time any kind of telephony users. These new ones needn't concern themselves with the Asterisk references except to put FS into historical context. One last thing. You said, "...the beauty of asterisk is its simplicity." I can guarantee you that the Asterisk "refugees" here in the FS community will vehemently disagree with this statement. However, since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we will let that comment slide. :) We will take your comments as suggestions where we can improve things on the wiki. If you see any specific references to Asterisk that are spurious then let us know and we'll evaluate them on a case by case basis. You can also hop on IRC channel #freeswitch-docs and air your concerns in real time. -MC Sent from my iPhone On Aug 30, 2008, at 9:59 AM, "Anthony Minessale" <anthony.minessale(a)gmail.com > wrote: > Hello, > > I think mostly everything you are saying is completely wrong. > > The majority of documents we have that mention asterisk strive to > make sure it's well understood that FreeSWITCH has an entire > different paradigm. > Brian West and I have been kicking around some ideas for a FS book. I would like to encourage you to do so. I think this would give a boost to FS visibility and grow the user community. I would suggest two books. The first would be for non-engineering users who need to configure FS in an IT environment. The second would be for engineering users who might need to better understand the structure, internals, and technologies incorporated in FS to get the most from it and perhaps even to participate in extending it. If these could appear as O'Reilly books, I think it would accelerate FS visibility and adoption. Being published as an O'Reilly book sort of brands a technology as no longer speculative, and here to stay. Asterisk was on a growth trajectory anyway, but I still think they got a boost when O'Reilly began publishing Asterisk oriented books. If the FS book(s) did not assume VoIP expertise and included some warm-up chapters that explained VoIP 101 technologies in simple terms to help open source PBX prospects get acquainted with VoIP, SIP, RTP, XML, scripting, etc., then open source PBX newbies who are indifferent to Asterisk versus FS might flock to FS where there is more of a foothold getting started. The O'Reilly Asterisk book I always wanted to see was 'Understanding Asterisk Internals', in the same vein as 'Understanding the Linux Kernel'. This book would describe the overall source structure, and would be the key resource for very technical users and fledgling project core developers. Granted, a book like that becomes stale quickly for an actively developed project, but that is equally true of the Linux kernel where there is no shortage of kernel internals books. So to summarize, I think FS has an opportunity to fill a void overlooked (or underfunded) by the Asterisk community, where a series of FS books ranging from user level to developer level could make FS much more appealing for new open source PBX users, and students in university courses. As with any open source technology, developer mindshare it the key to long term success. Disclaimer: I follow FS and Asterisk with keen interest, but don't have an opportunity to use either in my day job. I develop proprietary PBX software, and came to monitor the FS mailing list out of interest in Sofia-SIP. by xbipin 29 Aug '08

29 Aug '08

hi, actually to try out freeswitch to the fullest, i need to get it running using TLS and that also on a windows server as my isp blocks plain SIP and my dedicated server is windows 2003. the problem is i cant get TLS running on windows using freeswitch and what i was told and what i read was sofia isnt compiled using TLS, i have openssl installed as well as certificates installed but can any1 plz guide me on how to compile sofia using TLS on windows or if some1 could send me a compiled sofia for windows that supports TLS so i can atleast get it running and then help in testing other features etc. i was also told its a build cycle issues and not a bug so i have reported this on jira, if some1 could enable TLS support on the windows build process or any sort of help is very much appreciated. How to configure zaptel
by Евгений Золотов 29 Aug '08

29 Aug '08

We reinstall FreeSWITCH version to be in the mainstream of project. The last release successfully working for us was 9235 (11.08) we have installed 9377 (28.08) , and have some questions. 1. As we before installation of new release need to have successfully working it would be desirable to have simultaneously installed 2 releases, we do it so: - we rename old (9235) installation to /usr/local/fs.9235; - install new (9377) and rename it also to /usr/local/fs.9377; - for working with necessary version we set link fron directory /usr/local : $ ln -s fs.9377 freeswitch - Seems it's ОК. Is it correct??? 2. We experiment with E1 PRI: > version FreeSwitch Version 1.0.trunk (9377) > load mod_openzap ... API CALL [load(mod_openzap)] output: +OK > oz list API CALL [oz(list)] output: +OK span: 1 type: isdn chan_count: 31 dialplan: XML context: public dial_regex: fail_dial_regex: hold_music: analog_options none +OK span: 2 type: isdn chan_count: 31 dialplan: XML context: public dial_regex: fail_dial_regex: hold_music: analog_options none - E1 PRI works correctly (make calls) with same FreeSWITCH (that's 9235 version), we had no time to check up 9377 version yet. Our configuration files below - here all is correct: - /etc/zaptel.conf loadzone = us defaultzone=us span=1,1,0,ccs,hdb3,crc4 bchan=1-15,17-31 dchan=16 span=2,1,0,ccs,hdb3,crc4 bchan=32-46,48-62 dchan=47 - /etc/openzap/openzap.conf [span zt] name => OpenZAP number => 1 trunk_type => E1 b-channel => 1-15 d-channel => 16 b-channel => 17-31 [span zt] name => OpenZAP number => 2 trunk_type => E1 b-channel => 32-46 d-channel => 47 b-channel => 48-62 - other files /etc/openzap/ didn't change; - we didn't find "trunk_type => E1" in examples of FS, but we find it in examples at www.sangoma.com ; if to change it for "trunk_type => t1" that the result does not change in any way . - /usr/local/fs.9235/conf/autoload_configs/openzap.conf.xml <configuration name="openzap.conf" description="OpenZAP Configuration"> <settings> <param name="debug" value="1"/> </settings> <pri_spans> <span id="1">  <param name="mode" value="user" /> <param name="dialplan" value="XML"/> <param name="context" value="public"/> </span> <span id="2">  <param name="mode" value="user" /> <param name="dialplan" value="XML"/> <param name="context" value="public"/> </span> </pri_spans> </configuration> - which another values (except "user") can be for <param name="mode" value="user" /> ???

Playback loop and Playback on Parked Call
by Doug Blacksone 29 Aug '08

29 Aug '08

Hi, There are two issues that I am trying to resolve. Is there anyway to continuously loop an audio file? With the playback app, the call gets hung up after the audio file finishes playing, but I need it to replay from the beginning until the caller hangs up. The other issue has to do with the Park app. Is there anyway to playback an audio file ( on a continuous basis) for a parked call? I checked the wiki but can't find any info on that. Any ideas on how to resolve those problems? Thanks, Doug

CDR accounting question
by Woody Dickson 29 Aug '08

29 Aug '08

Hi, I have a qestion about how to extract the time duration for each individual outgoing call that Freeswitch makes for an incoming call. Here is the scenario : User 10000 --> Freeswitch -------> sofia/voip-gw/160454534333 | -----> sofia/voip-gw2/17864333431 >From Freeswitch's CDR XML output, I can extract the entire duration of the call from the perspective of User 10000 calling Freeswitch. Is there anyway I can tell the duration for each of the two outgoing calls that Freeswitch makes on behalf of User 10000. The reason is because the cost for each one of the outgoing number can be different and I need to correctly account for that. Is it possible for Freeswich to give me that kind of information? Thanks, Woody
