A belated welcome to the week of April 22! News and notes is a day late because I spent all day yesterday working on the new FreeSWITCH book <http://www.packtpub.com/freeswitch-1-2/book>. Good news - we have submitted all the content! It's now just a matter of getting all the edits and reviews done. We're a little more than halfway through that process. We'll update you as more news becomes available. Last week we had a conference call that<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_04_17>lasted quite a while. Dave Kompel showed us some tricks with using MS Visual Studio 2012 to build FreeSWITCH applications. That discussion dovetailed into a more general discussion about some of the other things Dave has been doing with FreeSWITCH under Windows. In the weeks and months ahead, Dave will be doing some more Windows-only discussions outside of the main weekly conference call. Keep an eye on the mailing list<http://lists.freeswitch.org>for more announcements. Tomorrow we have scheduled an engineer from JeraSoft<http://www.jerasoft.net/products/vcs/index.html>who will be talking about their routing and billing solution that has been tightly integrated with FreeSWITCH 1.2. If you have FreeSWITCH in a production environment where billing and routing are core elements then this discussion <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_04_24> will definitely be of interest. Have a great rest of the week! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

Greetings! Happy tax day to those in the USA - we hope all is well with your business. Speaking of business, I thought I would relay the interesting news<http://www.cnbc.com/id/100637184>about Dish Network making a bid for Sprint. Many here in North America will be keeping a close eye on this one. Whether or not this is just a big mess<http://www.zdnet.com/softbank-sprint-clearwire-dish-figuring-out-this-merge…>or an opportunity for Sprint to become a "real" competitor to AT&T and Verizon remains to be seen. Regardless of the outcome, most of us here are hoping for a healthier Sprint so that we can avoid another duopoly. On last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_04_10>we decided to have a preliminary discussion so that we can prepare for this week <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_04_17>. Dave Kompel will be showing us how to build rapidly FreeSWITCH applications in MS Visual Studio 2012 and have those run under mod_managed<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Mod_managed>. Be sure to consult this document<http://download.drknetworking.com/MeetingPreparation.pdf>so that you can get all the prerequisites installed in time for our call on Wednesday. In other news I would like to let everyone know that I spoke with Kashif Kahn over at Vestec <http://www.vestec.com>. We are gearing up for the automatic speech recognition application building contest. The winners will be announced at ClueCon 2013 <http://www.cluecon.com>. The official contest page will be posted on the ClueCon website shortly. Stay tuned for more information and be ready to start building your ASR applications! The ClueCon 2013 call for speakers recently went out and we've had a number of submissions already. We look forwarding to hearing more talk ideas, so please send those in right away. In the meantime ClueCon registration<http://www.cluecon.com/register/>is now open so be sure to get signed up, and don't forget to book your room at the Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile <http://www.cluecon.com/hotels/>hotel for only $169 per night. A belated happy Monday to all! Last week on our conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_04_03>we spent some time discussing various topics such as Jira system improvements and updates, sound prompts, ClueCon 2013 and several other topics. The recordings can be found in the usual place<http://torrents.freeswitch.org/conf_call_2013-04-03.torrent>. On this week's call <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_04_10>we are going to have a community discussion and a few minutes of Q&A from the audience. If possible, please add your questions to the agenda page and we'll research them prior to the call. Where applicable we'll ask members of the audience to update the wiki to reflect any undocumented knowledge that has been discussed. Things have been busy with the advent of ClueCon 2013<http://www.cluecon.com>season but we're on top of things and we'll keep everyone posted on all the particulars. Feel free to register at any time. Also, please contact us at this email address if you have any questions about being a speaker, sponsor, or attendee. We'll be glad to assist. One last item: I wanted to personally say thank you to Steven Ayre for all of his hard work with answering questions on the mailing list. He has done a great job of helping lots of people with a variety of questions. Many thanks to Steven and all the others who make FreeSWITCH such a great FOSS community. Thanks and have a great week! -- Michael S Collins Twitter: @mercutioviz http://www.FreeSWITCH.org http://www.ClueCon.com http://www.OSTAG.org

Greetings! We are back after a brief hiatus. Our friend and colleague Brian West took some much-deserved time off last week so the rest of us were a bit busier than usual. Brian does an amazing amount of work on FreeSWITCH, CudaTel, and ClueCon, so we're definitely glad he's back to work! On last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_03_20>we talked about Debian packaging with a little VoIP security and ZRTP thrown in for good measure. Interestingly, a number of people stayed on the call until 6pm EST! You are welcome to stay in the public conference room for as long as you like. This week<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_03_27>we have Mark Crane scheduled to give us an update on FusionPBX. It's been about 12 months since we last heard from him. We are looking forward to seeing the improvements that have been added in the past year. We are also gearing up for ClueCon 2013 <http://www.cluecon.com> so save the date: August 6-8, 2013. If you have any questions about being a speaker, sponsor, or attendee then by all means contact us at this email address. Remember that WebRTC is a big topic in the news right now and we are looking for folks to talk about WebRTC in their open source telephony projects and solutions. Have a great week and we'll talk to you again in April! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

11 Mar '13

Hello folks! News and Notes is back after a hiatus last week. The important news from the past week is that of the recent releases of both FreeSWITCH version 1.2.6 <http://freeswitch.org/node/439> and version 1.2.7. As Ken Rice mentioned in his announcement<http://lists.freeswitch.org/pipermail/freeswitch-users/2013-March/093229.ht…>, Murphy's Law <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy%27s_law> struck again. Quite literally within minutes of tagging and releasing version 1.2.6 the team discovered some serious issues and very quickly released version 1.2.7. Needless-to-say, if you somehow ended up on 1.2.6 then please immediately move to 1.2.7. Last week on the community conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_03_06>we reviewed some of the important aspects of ZRTP <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/ZRTP> vs. SRTP<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/SRTP>. It is easy to setup ZRTP, so we encourage you to do so. The more people we have using it the better our implementation will be. Also, it will be easier to encourage hardware vendors to include ZRTP when they realize just how pervasive it is. On this week's call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_03_13>we are having long-time telephony OSS programmer Areski join us to highlight the improvements in Newfies Dialer<http://www.newfies-dialer.org/>. A lot has changed in the year since we last heard from him. We look forward to hearing more. In ClueCon news we have uploaded more videos from 2012: * Seven Du - Building a Command and Dispatch System<http://youtu.be/FsSenee8Fn8> * Chad Phillips - Fun With VoIP <http://youtu.be/cZSRkkbf1D0> Stay tuned for more information on ClueCon 2013 - it's coming up fast. In the meantime, have a great week! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

Hello all, We just wanted to let everyone know that FreeSWITCH 1.2.6 has been released<http://freeswitch.org/node/439>. Many have been waiting for this version so that they can put it into production systems. This new version has numerous bug fixes and the team has spent a lot of time and energy tracking down and eliminating hard-to-find memory leaks. Please update to this version as soon as you reasonably can. 25 Feb '13

Greetings! First item in the news today is a happy report from long-time FreeSWITCH user Henry Gavin. Henry runs a company in the U.K. called SureVoIP<http://www.surevoip.co.uk>. He is pleased to report that "thanks to FreeSWITCH and FusionPBX" his company is once again a finalist for the annual ITSPA awards<http://www.surevoip.co.uk/blog/2013/02/25/surevoip-and-the-surevoip-api-fin…>. Congrats to Henry for leveraging FreeSWITCH in a successful business endeavor. Another annual event is the Google Summer of Code<http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2013>(GSoC). FreeSWITCH will once again apply as a mentoring organization. Please start thinking of project ideas that we can include in our organization's application. Applications will be submitted starting March 18 and no later than March 29. Ken Rice and I will be coordinating this process. Stay tuned for more details. On last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_02_20>we did a nice tour of the CudaTel <http://www.cudatel.com> Communication Server. In the coming weeks we will have more presentations for GUI front-ends that community members have built. On this week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_02_27>we will have Ken Rice give us an update on his new project: SwitchPi <http://switchpi.org>. If you like DIY projects then you'll appreciate what Ken has done with integrating the Raspberry Pi with FreeSWITCH and some other items to create something new. We look forward to seeing it in action. Don't forget about the FreeSWITCH HA discussion on Tuesday evening at 8PM EST. Last week's discussion was very fruitful. Eliot Gable gave us all a lot of information about the different approaches that he can take for building mod_ha_cluster <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Mod_ha_cluster>. We look forward to his report on the potential of using OpenMPI<http://www.open-mpi.org/>. For those who can't make it to the HA discussion please join weekly conference call on Wednesday where we will have a brief recap of the HA call. In ClueCon <http://www.cluecon.com>news we have uploaded two new videos: * What's new in sipXecs 4.6 <http://youtu.be/mz14UqXRQDU> - Douglas Hubler * Challenges and Opportunities in Open Source VoIP<http://youtu.be/QnDYE-DfjgU>- Travis Cross Stay tuned for more ClueCon 2012 videos and ClueCon 2013 announcements. Have a great week and we look forward to talking to you on Wednesday. -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

Greetings all! Last week was rather interesting. Initially we had planned on doing a CudaTel <http://www.cudatel.com> demonstration on the weekly conference call. However, interest in Eliot Gable's mod_ha_cluster<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Mod_ha_cluster>and the accompanying conversation<http://lists.freeswitch.org/pipermail/freeswitch-users/2013-February/092187…>was particularly intense. That being the case, on last week's conference call <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_02_13> we spent most of the time talking about HA in general and how we could build a FreeSWITCH HA system. We also invited everyone who is interested in the subject to call in to the public FreeSWITCH conference at 8PM EST on Tuesday evening (Feb 19) for the first HA conference call. (Eliot won't join until about 8:15PM.) If you have a vested interest in HA for FreeSWITCH then please join the conference call. For this week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_02_20>we will ask one of the participants on the Tuesday night call to give us a brief overview of the HA discussion. After that I will be doing a demonstration of the CudaTel to show off what the FreeSWITCH team has been working so hard to develop these past few years. We hope you enjoy it! For the DIY crowd you may enjoy this site <http://switchpi.org/> that Ken Rice set up. It's dedicated to doing cool things with FreeSWITCH and the Raspberry Pi <http://www.raspberrypi.org/>. Check it out! In ClueCon <http://www.cluecon.com>2013 news we are getting things all set. In the coming days we will be making announcements about new sponsors, registration and hotel information, and a call for speakers for this year's event. Don't forget to plan for a full 3 days, August 6th - 8th. Also, we tend to do a lot of fun stuff on the Monday before ClueCon, so it's a good idea to arrive on or before Monday August 7. Hope you have a great week! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

Hello all! News and notes are back after a brief hiatus last week. We (the FreeSWITCH team) were in Milwaukee last week and we appreciated being fed by the community. Thank you! We love this community. It seems the big news <http://freeswitch.org/node/435> last week came courtesy of our friend Kristian Kielhofner <http://blog.krisk.org/>. As reported in this blog post<http://blog.krisk.org/2013/02/packets-of-death.html>, Kristian ran into a rather unusual set of circumstances that resulted in Packets of Death for some Intel NICs. In addition to being Slashdotted<http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/02/06/2024251/intel-gigabit-nic-packet-of…>, Kristian's research ended up being featured in a Wired.com story<http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2013/02/packet-of-death/>. Don't forget to read Kristian's update post<http://blog.krisk.org/2013/02/packets-of-death-update.html> that includes information about Intel's response to the whole situation. This week things will start to return to normal with our weekly conference call <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_02_13>. We are going to spend a few weeks talking about various FreeSWITCH GUIs, starting with the CudaTel <http://www.cudatel.com>. For the past four years or so we've been building the CudaTel Communication Server and we'd like to show off some of the cool things it can do. We have two other news items. The first one has to do with mod_ha_cluster<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Mod_ha_cluster>, which our very own Eliot Gable is building. Financial support for this open-source module will be done through FreeSWITCH Solutions<http://www.freeswitchsolutions.com/>. An interesting discussion can be found in this email thread<http://lists.freeswitch.org/pipermail/freeswitch-users/2013-February/092095…>. The other item comes from Ken Rice who has some updates on Jira and ZRTP. Check out his mailing list post<http://lists.freeswitch.org/pipermail/freeswitch-users/2013-February/092155…>for more information. Have a great week and we'll talk to you on Wednesday. -- Michael S Collins Twitter: @mercutioviz http://www.FreeSWITCH.org http://www.ClueCon.com http://www.OSTAG.org

Hello all! I wanted to start off by giving you all some good news: Our friends at Newegg <http://www.newegg.com> have successfully slain a Patent Troll named Soverain. This NPE (non-producing entity) acquired some questionable patents and started suing just about anybody with an online shopping cart on their website. To make a long story short: Newegg fought them in court instead of settling and in the process got all three patents invalidated! More details available at the Ars Technica article<http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/01/how-newegg-crushed-the-shopping-…>. In any event, those of us who do software for a living, especially in the US, are well aware of the dangerous patent situation we have. Hattip to Newegg for doing us all a favor. More good news! We have released a few more ClueCon 2012 videos: * Open Source is revamping telecom. You want in. Learn from our wins and misses.<http://www.cluecon.com/presentation/open-source-revamping-telecom-you-want-…>- Darren Schreiber * HOMER in the cloud. <http://www.cluecon.com/presentation/homer-cloud/> - Alexandr Dubovikov * OSTAG - Who we are, what we do, and why.<http://www.cluecon.com/presentation/ostag-who-what-why/>- Raymond Chandler I will be uploading the slides for the talks shortly. In other ClueCon news we are gearing up for the 2013 event. We look forward to hearing from prospective speakers, sponsors, and attendees. As a reminder, we are at the same hotel <http://www.cluecon.com/hotels/> this year and the event runs from August 6th through the 8th. Stay tuned for more information. We have an annual tradition that is coming up next week: buy the developers dinner! Quite simply, we invite the community to throw some money into the hat and then the developers use it to buy dinner. The easiest way to donate is to click the Donate button on the main FreeSWITCH website<http://www.freeswitch.org>. (Right-hand side, under the ClueCon 2013 logo.) Do a Paypal transaction, mark it person (a gift is fine) and in the message to the recipient mention that the money is for the developer dinner. We appreciate the community doing this again for us this year. Thank you! We'll talk to you this Wednesday on our weekly conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_01_30>. Last week was an open discussion<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2013_01_23>. This week I would will be doing an event socket and ESL review. More people are using these great tools and we are seeing some of the same questions being asked so we want to make sure that we get this information out there for everyone to use. Thanks again for being a great community and we will talk to you again next week. -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE
