Hello all! Last week was mostly status quo - busy but not too busy. We spent time working on chapters 5 and 6 of the second edition of the FreeSWITCH book<https://www.packtpub.com/freeswitch-1-0-6-build-robust-high-performance-tel…>. We also had an interesting discussion<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_10_03>about Lumicall <http://www.lumicall.org>, an Android application that allows for mobile VoIP. This week<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_10_10>we our very own Ken Rice (with an assist from yours truly) will be discussing FreeSWITCH data gathering and troubleshooting techniques. We will also be talking about how to get all of this data into a Jira in such a way that the developers will be thankful. The following week we've scheduled Chad Engler to come discuss with us his node.js/ESL interface<https://github.com/englercj/node-esl> . In other news we just wanted to let you know that our friends over at Vestec<http://vestec.com>have closed a new round of funding. Check out this release <http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/10/prweb9961259.htm> for details. We are getting ready to put the finishing touches on the voice-enabled application contest. In the meantime keep working on those application ideas - you may just be the one to win some cash! We thank the Vestec folks for being so supportive. Have a great week! -- Michael S Collins Twitter: @mercutioviz http://www.FreeSWITCH.org http://www.ClueCon.com http://www.OSTAG.org

Welcome to October! I hope the weather is nice where you are. Here it's still above 100F. :) Last week was a little bit quieter than the previous few weeks. I had a chance to work on the FreeSWITCH change log and I made a list<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_09_26#News.2C_Notes.2C_.26_M…>of some of the APIs, dialplan tools, and channel variables. These have all been added since 1.2.0 was initially released in early August. All of them have wiki entries - thanks to those who took the initiative to do add them. Feel free to add your knowledge and experience to the mix. Last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_09_26>was an object lesson in the challenges of getting a SIP proxy working with TLS and FreeSWITCH. This week<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_10_03>we are going to change direction and look at something that has been slowly (and painfully) advancing the past few years: mobile VoIP. We will be having Daniel Pocock share with us some information about Lumicall<http://www.lumicall.org>, an open source mobile VoIP client for Android devices. There is also a service component to Lumicall and we'll be learning about that as well. Come join us to see the state of mobile VoIP<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_VoIP>. We are working on some fresh presentations for later this month. We hope to have an update on e164.org and how we can all get involved. We are also preparing a presentation on how to perform some of the data-gathering techniques <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Reporting_Bugs> that are needed for basic and advanced troubleshooting. If you have some input on these or other presentations please let me or Ken Rice know. Thanks! -- Michael S Collins Twitter: @mercutioviz http://www.FreeSWITCH.org http://www.ClueCon.com http://www.OSTAG.org

Welcome to the last Monday of September 2012! We've had quite the interesting week. Perhaps the most interesting item the team dealt with was a vulnerability in the Sofia SIP stack that would cause a segmentation fault while processing a specially crafted SIP message. Just to show you how nimble the FreeSWITCH developers are, from the time the vulnerability was reported it took less than a day to fix, test, and roll a new version of FreeSWITCH. We encourage everyone on 1.2 to get updated to version 1.2.3 <http://files.freeswitch.org/freeswitch-1.2.3.tar.bz2> as soon as possible. (The fix is also in the 1.3 development branch as of last Wednesday, September 19.) We tip our hats to Anthony and the rest of the dev team<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FreeSwitch_FAQ#Q:_So_where_do_I_find_wishli…>for their hard work on our behalf. Last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_09_19>was also very informative. We received an introduction to the repro SIP proxy <http://resiprocate.org/About_Repro> software. We look forward to this coming Wednesday <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_09_26>where Scott Godin and Daniel Pocock will continue the discussion and will get deeper into how to set up the proxy and use it with FreeSWITCH. If you haven't already tried to install repro please do so. Daniel has a nice tutorial<http://www.opentelecoms.org/using-repro-with-asterisk-or-freeswitch>over at OpenTelecoms.org - be sure to check it out and bring your questions on Wednesday. Finally, we'd like to draw your attention to this blog post<http://blog.krisk.org/2012/09/freeswitch-stable-branch-sponsored-by.html>by long time FreeSWITCH and open source telephony supporter Kristian Kielhofner. Kristian reports that his company, Star2Star Communications<http://www.star2star.com/>, is sponsoring the FreeSWITCH stable branch by giving direct financial support to the project. This allows for a full-time team member to work on things like the stable branch and packaging as well as community interaction and documentation. We appreciate those who support FreeSWITCH and open source telephony! Have a good week and we'll see you again in October. -- Michael S Collins Twitter: @mercutioviz http://www.FreeSWITCH.org http://www.ClueCon.com http://www.OSTAG.org

Hello all, It's been another productive week on the FreeSWITCH team. We are pleased to let you know that we have officially tagged <http://freeswitch.org/node/418>FreeSWITCH version 1.2.2 in the git repo. Source tarballs are available in the usual location <http://files.freeswitch.org>. Thanks to all those whose efforts make more frequent releases a reality. It is much appreciated. On last Wednesday's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_09_12>we enjoyed a nice Adhearsion <http://adhearsion.com/> presentation by Ben Langfeld and Ben Klang. Adhearsion is a Ruby-based framework for developing telephony applications. Ben and Ben discuss how Adhearsion works, why Ruby is cool for building telephony apps, and why the Adhearsion guys love FreeSWITCH. FreeSWITCH community members are invited to join the Adhearsion team at AdhearsionConf <http://adhearsionconf.com> in Palo Alto, CA on October 20-21, 2012. Community members receive a special rate by using discount code AHNLOVESFREESWITCH. Thanks to Ben and Ben for a great presentation with cool slides<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/images/8/8e/FreeSWITCH_Weekly_CC_2012-09-12.pdf> . For the next few weeks we look forward to hearing from Daniel Pocock and Scott Godin who will be telling us more about the Repro<http://www.resiprocate.org/About_Repro>SIP proxy and the ReSIProcate <http://www.resiprocate.org/Resip_Overview> SIP stack. For many of us it will be our first look at a SIP proxy that does not have its roots in the OpenSER project. We look forward to learning more on this Wednesday's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_09_19> . Greetings! We hope you all had a great week. On our Wednesday conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_09_05>we discussed several items as a community. One item of note was how to handle mailing list posts that are overly broad and reflect a lack of research on the part of the individual doing the posting. After much discussion we decided that we would create some online documentation that helps new ones get their bearings when considering the big picture in FreeSWITCH. (For example, what are modules and why do we have them?) Thanks to Dave Kompel for helping to get that started. We are also pleased to announce that we have started up the Adopt-a-module<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Adopt-a-module>project. The idea is simple but powerful: community members who are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about a specific module will volunteer to "adopt" that module. Adopting a module means doing several things: watching the mailing list and IRC channel for questions, monitoring the Git repository for new commits, keeping the module's wiki page up-to-date, and acting as a bug marshal for any Jira <http://jira.freeswitch.org> tickets that are opened. We've had several people step up already. Please visit the list of modules needing adoption<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Adopt-a-module#Modules_Waiting_for_Adoption>to see if you there is one that fits your area of expertise. We give a special note of thanks to Anshel Blum for helping to get this one going. This week we welcome Ben Langfield and Ben Klang<http://www.cluecon.com/speaker/111/>who will be discussing the Adhearsion <http://adhearsion.com/> framework for FreeSWITCH. Adhearsion is a Ruby-based framework for building telephony applications. You may recall that Ben Klang joined us at ClueCon 2012 <http://www.cluecon.com> to make the announcement<http://www.cluecon.com/presentation/news-about-adhearsion-project/>about Adhearsion being available for FreeSWITCH. We look forward to learning more about how Adhearsion works with FreeSWITCH. Let's all have a great week! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

Happy Tuesday to you all! I hope you had a relaxing 3-day weekend. On last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_08_29> we had a nice discussion about TLS <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Tls> in FreeSWITCH. Mitch Capper helped demystify some of the things that go on with creating certificates, handling certificate authorities (CA), and the like. This week we will be having a community discussion on how to improve our handling of poorly-worded or inappropriate questions sent to the mailing list. Ourupcoming schedule<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_08_29#Upcoming_Presentations> for September is all booked up, so make plans to be on our Wednesday conference calls. Be on the lookout for updated English Callie and French June sounds. They have been recorded and are being verified. I suspect they will show up in the next day or two. The new FreeSWITCH book is moving along as well. I just submitted chapter 2 to our publisher and am now on to redrafting chapter 3. On a side note I just want to mention that I updated the FreeSWITCH Wikipedia page<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeSWITCH> to reflect the fact that we are now on version 1.2.1 and that we've formed stable and development branches. ClueCon 2012 attendees and FreeSWITCH community members qualify for special pricing at the IIT Real-Time Communications Conference and Expo<http://www.rtc-conference.com/register/>. Use the special discount code *FREWDSC* when you register. More details are available at ClueCon.com <http://cluecon.com/>. Hello all! Apologies for the delay on this week's news and notes. Yesterday was quite busy, but things are going well. I am happy to report that we have submitted the first chapter of the new FreeSWITCH book to the publisher! We've also conferred with a few members of the community and convinced Packt<http://www.packtpub.com>to let us add some bonus content! Stay tuned for more previews and teases. Right now it's still early in the game so I don't want to reveal too much. On last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_08_22>we discussed a number of things. First, we did a follow up to Ken's previous discussion <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_08_15>about the stable 1.2 branch and using git. Second, we talked a bit about Vestec <http://www.vestec.com> and the great ASR application contest. (More information is forthcoming!) Lastly, we had Mitch Capper discussing the latest version of the FSClient <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FSClient>Windows softphone. If you haven't tried it out I highly recommend it. It's now stable and feature-enabled to the point that I've discontinued using X-Lite or Jitsi. Tomorrow we hope to have a discussion about TLS<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Tls>. We have several community members who are experienced with key and certificate management and we will be calling upon them to share their experience with the rest of us. After that we will have an open discussion. Cheers! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

FreeSWITCH Weekly News and Notes is back after a brief hiatus. In case you hadn't heard: FreeSWITCH 1.2 is out!<http://freeswitch.org/node/410> In fact, Anthony and Ken are working on a 1.2.2 release. Stay tuned for an announcement. On last week's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_08_15> we discussed some of the git commands you may need to run in order to get yourself moved up to the 1.2stable branch<http://fisheye.freeswitch.org/changelog/~br=v1.2.stable/freeswitch.git>. Join us this Wednesday<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_08_22> and we'll do a quick follow up for those who may still have questions. We hope to have some other announcements as well. In post-ClueCon news we'd like to let everyone know that Vestec<http://vestec.com/> is finalizing the arrangements for the great ASR (automated speech recognition) app-building contest. This is a great opportunity to get some cash and free speech recognition licenses in return for investing some time and effort into learning the Vestec system and building an application to show off to the world. It's also a great way to help promote FreeSWITCH among larger enterprises who may not realize that professional-grade ASR is available. We will discuss this further on Wednesday's conference call<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_08_22> . Lastly we'd like to let everyone know that the ClueCon videos will be made available in the coming weeks and months. Please give us some time to do a little editing before we release them all. It will be worth the wait! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE

Greetings from the FreeSWITCH team! Things have been busy with all of the ClueCon<http://www.cluecon.com/?cc12-0730> preparations! We hope to see you in Chicago next week. In the meantime we are still doing our weekly conference calls. This past Wednesday we enjoyed a very nice demonstration by Dave Kompel (IRC: drk__) on how to implement Fail2Ban <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Fail2ban?cc12-0730>-like functionality in a Windows environment. Dave's code is simple and elegant. If you missed the presentation then please download it here<http://torrents.freeswitch.org/conf_call_2012-07-25.torrent?cc12-0730>and listen to it. The source code is also available <http://wiki.freeswitch.org/files/wftb.zip?cc12-0730>. This week we will be having a community discussion on several subjects, not the least of which is the interesting news that Google uses FreeSWITCH internally<http://bit.ly/GOOGandFS> . This is the last weekly news and notes before ClueCon. Next Monday I'll be sending this out *from Chicago**!* To the scores of people who have registered and sponsored us this year I would like to give a well-deserved thanks. We are looking forward to seeing everyone next week. If you haven't yet registered <http://www.cluecon.com/register?cc12-0730> there is still time, but please hurry! The sooner we know you're coming, the better prepared we will be to take care of you when you arrive. Hello all! Last week we enjoyed a nice conference call with Darren Schreiber<http://www.cluecon.com/speaker/98?cc12-0723>from 2600hz <http://www.2600hz.com?cc12-0723>. Darren gave us a follow up<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_07_18?cc12-0723>presentation to the original SIP 101 discussion<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FS_weekly_2012_06_20?cc12-0723>that was held in June. This was a great presentation that went beyond the basics of SIP. We discussed important concepts like Via and Record Route headers and NOTIFY messages. SIP can do a lot, and with these two presentations we really have only scratched the surface. If we all bug Darren enough then perhaps we'll get a third presentation! The audio of the presentation is in the usual place<http://torrents.freeswitch.org/conf_call_2012-07-18.torrent?cc12-0723>and the slides will be available shortly. This week we will be hearing from the community. We will have a brief report from Dave Kompel who will get us up to speed on using Windows Advanced Firewall to implement Fail2Ban<http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Fail2ban?cc12-0723>-like functionality. After Dave speaks we will be opening things up for community discussion. Please bring your questions and topics! ClueCon 2012 <http://www.cluecon.com?cc12-0723> is shaping up nicely! We have recently added Ditech Networks<http://www.ditechnetworks.com?cc12-0723> , Bandwidth.com <http://www.bandwidth.com?cc12-0723>, and Yealink<http://www.yealink.com?cc12-0723>as sponsors. We are also happy to announce that Darrell Hensley <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLBLCcSiAr0> will be speaking on the subject of Transitioning to Professional Voice<http://www.cluecon.com/presentation/transition_pro_voice?cc12-0723>. Darrell is the CEO of GMVoices <http://www.gmvoices.com?cc12-0723>, a ClueCon media sponsor for many years and the supplier of Callie<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfkRNgM1IiA>, the voice of FreeSWITCH. We look forward to seeing Darrell in person again. As a quick reminder, if you register<http://www.cluecon.com/register?cc12-0723>by the end of the day on July 25th you will still receive four chances to win in the great ClueCon giveaway. See you in two weeks! -- Michael S Collins ClueCon Team http://www.cluecon.com 877-7-4ACLUE cc12-0723
