1.4/master openssl requirement change.
Please note, I just pushed a change that now requires openssl version 1.0.1e or later to build. I also added for osx to automatically look in the homebrew location for installing that library, as you will likely need to install homebrew openssl to build now. Please let me know if you see any issues. Mike
Was this a "made a change to a module somewhere that won't work without openssl 1.0.1e" or "build now mandates 1.0.1e and will complain/fail without it". If the former, what's the scope of won't work? If the latter, that knocks out compatibility with quite a few older distros, including anyone running RHEL/CentOS 5/Fedora 17/OpenSUSE 11/... -- Nathan On 01/29/2014 12:19 PM, Michael Jerris wrote:

We were already running in to issues where some core features for webrtc were not working silently causing some problems supporting things, and we are soon adding additional functionality that will make us more dependent on a fairly modern openssl. You can do as you please at your own risk, but we won't be supporting it, so we're not going to say it's safe. If it works now, we may break it at any time.

Preferably you could work on a package to build an RPM of the required openssl or a howto on building it static and configuring FS to use it including possible patches to add configure hooks to build and use a static version from a specified prefix.

FreeSWITCH v1.2 will continue to work fine on those older distributions. Which makes a certain degree of sense. If someone is running an ancient OS they probably shouldn't be running our very latest code. In addition to the obvious reasons, we're simply not testing newer code in that environment. So it would be a mistake to encourage people to run that combination. And if someone really wants to run CentOS 5 forever with WebRTC support, then that person or group can package a newer OpenSSL version for CentOS. I'm sure Ken would be happy to host that in our CentOS repo.
Hi Mike, This new requirement prevents me from building in debian squeeze (old-stable). I will upgrade to wheezy soon, but it would be nice to still be able to build FS in squeeze. Hi François, Debian is going to drop support for squeeze in just 3 months. You'll still be able to build FS v1.2 on squeeze. But it doesn't make any sense for us to plan our next release, which we'll likely be supporting for years, around an OS that will be out of support in 3 months. Upgrade to wheezy, you need to anyway. Hello, As far as I know, on Ubuntu 12.04 the latest openssl package is: 1.0.1-4ubuntu5.11 As you can see, there is no 'e' letter, however as we have checked, ubuntu backported changes from 1.0.1 (incliding e afaik) to this package. We have successful tests with webrtc on 12.04. Would it be possible to not hardcode that way 1.0.1e? T.

Ubuntu will be releasing a new LTS in a few months. Until that time, people on 12.04 can continue to run v1.2, which comprises at this point our only stable releases. Or people on 12.04 can package up a newer version of OpenSSL for 12.04 and host it in a PPA alongside the FS packages. That would be the right way to do it in any case.
word of wisdom; I would be terribly afraid if you use debian squeeze or ubuntu12.04 as I typically do not support either one anyway. They are basically from the same era and have a lot of the same problems. The kernel is not mature enough for modern CPU and has several issues. We do not look at the version number, we look at support for features that were added after 1.0.1c was released. I'm not positive if they are in 1.0.1d or not, but for pretty much everyone I would recommend you be on at least 1.0.1f or equivalent security patches. The 1.0.1e latest package in wheezy I think is effectively the same as 1.0.1f as 1.0.1f was just 1.0.1e plus some security patches i know they pulled in. Fair enough, I'm not actually a huge fan of homebrew either, but one thing it does quite nicely is to install conflicting libraries into a location that will not conflict with system libraries for things that may conflict, specifically: /usr/local/opt/openssl/ if you want to build your own, without having to change your freeswitch build procedures, make sure the libs end up in /usr/local/opt/openssl/lib and the headers get into /usr/local/opt/openssl/include. Alternatively, you can pick whatever directory you like to build into, i would suggest something not part of the typical lib chain, and specify to configure such as: ./configure LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/opt/openssl/lib CFLAGS=-I/usr/local/opt/openssl/include Mike On Jan 29, 2014, at 4:41 PM, Michael Jerris <mike@jerris.com> wrote:

Here is a recipe for cent5 and probably other linux if someone would be so kind as to clean it up and document and maybe make into a shell script. wget http://www.openssl.org/source/openssl-1.0.1f.tar.gz tar -zxvf openssl-1.0.1f.tar.gz cd openssl-1.0.1f ./config --prefix=/usr/openssl101f -fPIC make make install then go over to FS build root (even on existing build that had picked up the dependency by a git pull) ./configure CFLAGS="-I/usr/openssl101f/include" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/openssl101f/lib" Then build as normal /usr/openssl101f can really be anywhere and its a static linking so you don't need to distribute it. The upside is the control, the downside is that it requires us to maintain them for security issues and such. We are leaning towards moving to system libs where its practical. On Jan 30, 2014, at 4:07 AM, François <fdelawarde@wirelessmundi.com> wrote:

/usr/openssl101f can really be anywhere and its a static linking so you don't need to distribute it.

Alternatively, you can pick whatever directory you like to build into, i would suggest something not part of the typical lib chain, and specify to configure such as:
./configure LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/opt/openssl/lib CFLAGS=-I/usr/local/opt/openssl/include

We have successful tests with webrtc on 12.04. Would it be possible to not hardcode that way 1.0.1e?

Its a question of bundling the ones get get a benefit from bundling. We never bundled openssl, the problem was that we need certain features from a modern version of openssl and the older versions were not really working correctly even when they compiled properly. Well done guys. This, to me, seems like a no brainer. If we want to use webRTC and if we care about security at all - which nowadays has become pretty important to more and more people - then we should definitely update to the latest openssl. Having FS limited to TLS 1.0 with all its inherent security weaknesses always seemed dodgy to me. I for one welcome the security upgrade, even if it makes life a little harder while we all transition. Just my 2 cents. Unfortunately I got: checking for openssl... yes checking openssl_CFLAGS... checking openssl_LIBS... -lssl -lcrypto adding "-DHAVE_OPENSSL" to SWITCH_AM_CFLAGS checking for SSL_CTX_set_tlsext_use_srtp in -lssl... yes checking for DTLSv1_method in -lssl... no
configure: error: OpenSSL >= 1.0.1e and associaed developement headers required
FS git master (5228e02b19ea3d952d0c476e5aa0f1173b2083e4), Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Is there other trick to build FS master with openssl from source code?
Regards, T.

Lawrence, if this helps: while working on the updated wiki I tested FS install as of 2/3/14 on 10.6.8 and 10.7, I just added OPENSSL via brew, did nothing to the OSX supplied one, and FS make worked fine. Hi Mario, folks, OK -- if build for the latest master works with a homebrew-installed OPENSSL 101f, what is homebrew doing that a plain install of openssl 101f **into /usr/local/opt/openssl** isn't doing? Given that 101f came out on the 6th January, I'd be surprised if the homebrew packagers had incorporated custom tweaks already and rolled it out => what version of openssl is homebrew installing? If they have (and haven't pushed back upstream), I'd be intrigued to know what those changes from the "plain vanilla" openssl build are. Many thanks for the heads up on v8 -- I'll look out for this when I get that far in the fS build. all the best, Lawrence On 5 Feb 2014, at 01:56, Mario G wrote:

Hi Mike, folks, Bingo! --shared is your friend. building "plain" openssl 101f with --shared --prefix=/usr/local/opt/openssl and then running fs build gets through configure without problems. Result. [now I only have to get mod_mp4 to work through make :] many thanks, Lawrence On 5 Feb 2014, at 13:57, Michael Jerris wrote:

Keep in mind when you do this that the openssl you install becomes a dependency so the code is not portable without it so if you need to copy the binaries to other systems you plan accordingly such as installing the openssl into the same prefix as FS eg /usr/local/freeswitch On Wed, Feb 5, 2014 at 9:04 AM, Lawrence Conroy <lconroy@insensate.co.uk>wrote:
Hi Mike, folks, Bingo! --shared is your friend. building "plain" openssl 101f with --shared --prefix=/usr/local/opt/openssl and then running fs build gets through configure without problems. Result. [now I only have to get mod_mp4 to work through make :] many thanks, Lawrence

Hi There Mike, folks, [with apologies for being yet another whiny spammer ...] For those of us curmudgeons that are really unlikely to use homebrew (et al) anytime soon and have been happily building fS without those particular extra wheels ... Given that I appear to be able to to D/L, make openssl 1.0.1e (& make test) on a non homey snow leopard, where do I tell openssl to put itself? all the best, Lawrence On 29 Jan 2014, at 18:19, Michael Jerris wrote:
