A note from the Lead Developer. FreeSWITCH 1.8 Feature Requests
Hi, We are having an annual gathering to decide the roadmap for upcoming FreeSWITCH 1.8 Now is your chance to propose some feature requests in this thread. No guarantees, but this is the best time during our release cycle to daydream about the future. We hope to have a first cut of 1.8 in time for ClueCon 2017 so register early, the price is the lowest it will ever be during the Early Bird pricing offer lasting only a few more weeks. Also, Brian has started a fund to raise money to provide the team with meals and offset travel expenses if possible during the upcoming summit in little over a week from now. Its one really easy way to show your appreciation for another year of open source telephony! https://www.gofundme.com/freeswitch-developer-meeting-2017 -- Anthony Minessale II ♬ @anthmfs ♬ @FreeSWITCH ♬ ☞ http://freeswitch.org/ ☞ http://cluecon.com/ ☞ http://twitter.com/FreeSWITCH ☞ irc.freenode.net #freeswitch ☞ *http://freeswitch.org/g+ <http://freeswitch.org/g+>* ClueCon Weekly Development Call ☎ sip:888@conference.freeswitch.org ☎ +19193869900 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XXgW34t40s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLaDpGQuZDA
Hi all, I would like to see the freeswitch as sfu as option to conferencing module or stand alone module. Best regards, Mirko On Jan 25, 2017 20:04, "Anthony Minessale" <anthony.minessale@gmail.com> wrote:

I’ll echo Mirko’s wish for an SFU option for the videoconference functionality, while recognizing that’s highly unlikely :) Some other things I’d love to see for videoconference: - The option to assign different users to different layouts of the same videoconference - Positional data (which users where in a layout) sent to clients on layout changes - Convenience method in Verto client for dynamically changing the video resolution the user is sending to the server - Ability to easily overlay a client’s local video feed over their own image on a shared video canvas (variation of the same trick SFUs use to hide video delay from a local user) — pretty sure this would require the earlier mentioned positional data feature. - an ‘audio-floor-msec’ conference profile parameter, which would work for the audio floor in a similar manner to the ‘video-auto-floor-msec’ setting does for moving the user to the video floor. this would be great for situations where the video layout is managed manually instead of automatically by the conference. Hello, Anthony. Thank you and all other developers for this great telephony software. As I now work on second job where is implemented asterisk with opensips and freepbx for voip services, I see how FS overcomes asterisk. The only downside is the number of implementations and number of people in community. But this is because asterisk is in business more years. I see people want to switch to FS, but the other applications are tied to asterisk's agi, and now is ari with json implementation. For example predictives and callcenters. FS already support asterisk's dialplan, but this is a little, as rewriting dialplan to xml is not so hard. If FS will implement a module to emulate asterisk's ari for external software and will have and interface with json (like there is with xml, txt, html) then this will be a good chance to seamless replace asterisk with FS without redesigning the applications and more people will get accommodate with FS to future develop apps for FS. Oh, there are sounds and say module for english, russian, german, france. Why there is not for romanian? For now I mix romanian sounds found on asterisk's site. Asterisk support SS7. As I know FS does not have this support, only if an SS7 to SIP external device exists. An SS7 module will be great to be able to replace asterisk on such servers. I've finally implemented cdr to Postgres and LCR from Mysql. mod_cdr_pg have list of variables mapped to fields in the table, mod_lcr have the ability to write custom sql to retrieve data. Will be great if more modules could be customized with sql for data retrieve/insert. Would be the built in web portal developed in future to support not only viewing of data, but also authentication with different user level, call drop, spy, and other interesting features? -- Mimiko desu.

Do you think there is a real need for an ss7 implementation in freeswitch in addition to the sangoma stack? Their stack does its work and their price is IMHO correct (at least when I checked a few years ago.) Are there specific needs or functionalities missing when comparing to asterisk ss7 offer? I have imagined in the past porting chan_ss7 to freeswitch but instead went with sangoma when I realized that it was not that an easy task. -- Best Regards, Vallimamod .
sangoma stack is proprietary. I use asterisk to connect to an ss7 network 2017-02-01 14:33 GMT+03:00 Vallimamod Abdullah <vma@vallimamod.org>:

How about Distributed Freeswitch Cluster? For handling very large amount concurrent calls (telco-sized) and for high availability, we need clustered Freeswitch, with multiple call entry point connected together. Such as user1 on FS1 can call with user2 on FS2 automatically. And how about IMS compatibility options? Donny On Wed, Feb 1, 2017 at 8:59 PM, Ken Rice <krice@freeswitch.org> wrote:

Same can be done with FreeSwitch _ Kamailio + rtpengine As base point may be used kamailio config from Kazoo project. вт, 31 янв. 2017 г. в 18:27, Sergey Safarov <s.safarov@gmail.com>:
rtpengine can make FreeSwitch offload In this case; 1) FreeSwitch only manages call; 2) rtpengine make rtp trafic proxyng;
This allow create high performance clusters with clean architecture.

Looking at rtpengine, FreeSWITCH can already do all that and then some. Could you elaborate on this request?

Hi Sergey, But this is why many of users are using freeswitch they need a B2Bua on edge of their network completely hiding network topology. With multiple media servers (rtpengine instances) you can extremely increase capacity in terms of passing rtp flows from subscribers and media gateways in your secure perimeter. Hi Michael, In my setup I have multiple IVR server behind Freeswitch and as I see this right now there no way to horizontal scalability of solution. In most cases RTP will be a bottleneck, well of course putting Kamailio/Openser in front will partially solve problem, but having B2B UA on edge will be lost. So advantage is that packet forwarding performed on linux kernel level, so it never gets to application that allows to handle more simultaneous calls. FreeSWITCH pins the media by default without the need to use proxy media, proxy media was created to move formats thru FreeSWITCH that it doesn't know about, like G729, various pass thru video codecs and t.38 before we had full support. So I recommend you not use proxy media as it may go away in the future. Anything you've read that states performance improvements using proxy media are all false, the performance characteristics can't really be gauged on most modern systems. /b On Tue, Jan 31, 2017 at 11:46 PM Bipin Patel <bipin@xbipin.com> wrote:
hi,
in this part of the world we also have to proxy media, for 2 reasons, for hiding our gateways from end users because we retail as well as wholesale and plus many other providers have rtp proxy setup in different data centers, which ever is closer to the customer. FS can proxy media but if its processing a lot of calls its better to make something else proxy the media outside the FS box and things like rtpengine help a lot. Although u might argue FS should only process signalling but in real world i havent seen any trunk or carrier or vendor not proxying rtp

Hello Brian In suggested high performance cluster scheme on FS side is used bypass media mode. Not proxy media. What is about bypass media in future? Is this mode will be supported? Sergey вс, 5 февр. 2017 г. в 18:50, Brian West <brian@freeswitch.org>: FreeSWITCH pins the media by default without the need to use proxy media, proxy media was created to move formats thru FreeSWITCH that it doesn't know about, like G729, various pass thru video codecs and t.38 before we had full support. So I recommend you not use proxy media as it may go away in the future. Anything you've read that states performance improvements using proxy media are all false, the performance characteristics can't really be gauged on most modern systems. / b
Dear Brian, In practice, I find proxy media is useful. First for security application purpose there may be custom codec/ZRTP. The second, is when we dont want FS to process the media (because ZRTP or custom codec), but we dont want to use bypass mode, because sometime in Internet voice packet not fully delivered in both way if we use bypass (may be cause by double NAT), but ok when we use proxy media when FS side is not in NAT mode (thus avoiding double NAT scenario). I hope this feature is will not gone. Donny On Sun, Feb 5, 2017 at 10:49 PM, Brian West <brian@freeswitch.org> wrote:

The only scenario you describe that requires proxy media is custom codecs. All of the other scenarios you describe can be done without enabling proxy media. Even in the case of custom codecs, a small module can be added to enable this without proxy media.

I'm talking about totally different stuff. I'm talking about extra log levels. Not limiting current. Of course I can suppress some output in logfile config, but that is not what needed for development, as suppressing some logs may eventually lead to missing of necessary log data, when you need it. I found Asterisk verbose logging levels comfortable for that task, but this is not Asterisk, so that stuff is not available. 2017-02-08 17:48 GMT+03:00 Christopher Rienzo <cmrienzo@gmail.com>:
mod_logfile allows you to control log level per file or per function name. Check autoload_configs/logfile.conf.xml to see how to quiet down noisy modules.

The only scenario you describe that requires proxy media is custom codecs. All of the other scenarios you describe can be done without enabling proxy media. Even in the case of custom codecs, a small module can be added to enable this without proxy media.

Dear Brian,
In practice, I find proxy media is useful.

FreeSWITCH pins the media by default without the need to use proxy media, proxy media was created to move formats thru FreeSWITCH that it doesn't know about, like G729, various pass thru video codecs and t.38 before we had full support.
So I recommend you not use proxy media as it may go away in the future.
Anything you've read that states performance improvements using proxy media are all false, the performance characteristics can't really be gauged on most modern systems.

hi,
in this part of the world we also have to proxy media, for 2 reasons, for hiding our gateways from end users because we retail as well as wholesale and plus many other providers have rtp proxy setup in different data centers, which ever is closer to the customer. FS can proxy media but if its processing a lot of calls its better to make something else proxy the media outside the FS box and things like rtpengine help a lot. Although u might argue FS should only process signalling but in real world i havent seen any trunk or carrier or vendor not proxying rtp

1. if configured right, you should never need proxy media mode. 2. What is the advantage to offloading this?

There are also multiple debug levels that you can control. The feature you describe already exists.

I suggest to use message broker for this. As example rabbitMQ. Also rewrite queries and agent management in mod_callcenter to support clustered configurations. Sergey
