Spontaneous reboots of Polycom and Linksys phones
I am using Freeswitch and I have some phones that spontaneously reboot (often in the middle of a call). I did some searching around on the web, but didn't find any information that really applied to the problem I'm experiencing. I have a few dozen Polycom phones and a handful of Linksys phones of various models: Polycom IP301, IP320, IP331, IP430, IP501, IP601; also Linksys SPA901, SPA921, SPA941. I also have snom phones, but they don't reboot spontaneously. It's only the Polycom and Linksys phones that reboot spontaneously, and it seems to be correlated to call volume. Heavy usage of the Polycom and Linksys phones causes them to reboot more frequently (i.e. shorter duration between the reboots). For people making 50 calls a day, the Polycom phones spontaneously reboot every three days or so (and always on a call, it seems). For people making one or two calls a day, the Polycom will go months without a spontaneous reboot. This correlation between call volume and reboot frequency leads me to believe that there is some bug in the Polycom firmware, perhaps some of overflow condition that accumulates over time and eventually causes a crash (and subsequent reboot). I was wondering if anybody else experienced something similar, and whether anyone had developed a solution. One thing I am considering is to set up a script to reboot the Polycom phones in the middle of the night every day, which would hopefully prevent them from spontaneously rebooting during the day by preventing the phones from ever reaching the overflow condition (if that is indeed what causes the reboots). A nightly reboot would be a hackish way of fixing the problem, so I'd also love to hear if anybody has any other speculations on what might be causing the spontaneous reboots. We have phones in multiple buildings, and we've discovered that the spontaneous reboots happen on phones on different networks, so it's not specific to a particular LAN segment. For the most part, we are using the standard config files for the Polycom phones and for the Linksys phones.
I haven't... and I use the shit out of my polycom's, I use them for 10 hours or more solid a day on a single call.. while the 670 on my right makes 30-40 calls or more a day depending on what I'm doing. Now you failed to tell us what Firmware Rev you're running and what options you have turned on? /b On Mar 24, 2010, at 8:35 PM, Wellie Chao wrote:

I have ~100 Polycom's installed and never see unexplained or spontaneous reboots. I do see them reboot if the switch they are connected to momentarily drops the link (e.g. if the switch reboots) (to be clear this is with non-PoE powered phones - as PoE powered phones would of course reboot if the switch reboots...). I'd suggest upgrading to the latest bootrom and firmware for the Polycoms. They also upload their logs when they reboot (to the provisioning server) - so take a peek in there for clues. Thanks for responding, Brian, Chris, and Ghulam. To answer your questions, I am using bootrom 4.2.1 or 4.1.4 (depending on the phone model because some don't support the later bootrom) and also SIP 3.2.2 or 3.1.4, again depending on the phone model because of lack of support for 3.2.2 for some of the older Polycom models. I'm using the split SIP image. With regards to Chris's suggestion about switches, we have the Polycom phones hooked up to Linksys managed switches and Dell managed switches, and the Polycom phones spontaneously reboot on both switches. I'm pretty sure the Dell managed switches are not dropping link. I don't think the Linksys managed switches are either, but I'm less sure there because we've had some problems with the web management interface being a piece of crap in the past. With regards to Ghulam's observation about speakerphone use, our Polycom phones reboot even when not on speakerphone, so that's not it. I've uploaded some of my config files here: http://209.190.22.48/fs/polycom/ They are the same as my real config files, except username, password, and hostnames. For the most part, they are the factory default settings. I would love to see any config files you might be willing to share, to compare your config settings to mine. Also, one thing that came to mind: how are you specifying the server and proxy addresses? I am just using a hard-coded IP address with no DNS magic. Do you think that would make a difference? If you're using central provisioning with the Linksys/Cisco Small Business series phones and you leave the Message_Waiting option in the config (which is the default, very stupid), the phones will reboot every time they sync the config, if they have a voicemail waiting. Check to see if the Linksys spontaneous reboots correlate with pulling down the config (assuming you're using central provisioning) and make sure you either comment or delete Message_Waiting from the config. You may also want to see if there's any correlation with DHCP and the phones renewing their IP. We put all of our phones on DHCP reservations, so their IP doesn't/shouldn't change. I'm not sure what the phone will do if it goes to renew its address and the DHCP server hands it a different IP, it may cause the phone to reboot? Hi, i had experienced a similar problem with polycom ip500, and this was a power adapter problem causing phone to reboot when speaker phone is on and sound volume is high :), replacing 500mp adapter with 1000ma fixed the problem. if you are using PoE then it's something related to phone firmware definitely. -m On Thu, Mar 25, 2010 at 8:42 AM, Gabriel Kuri <gkuri@ieee.org> wrote:

Gabe, My Linksys phones do seem to reboot every time they sync the config. However, I have the Message_Waiting option turned off. Is there another option that you think might be related to the rebooting? I do not think it is a DHCP issue because the phones get the same IP address each time they request one from the DHCP server. I am using the 5.1.8 firmware, which I believe is the latest for the 921 and 941 phones. I have put one of my configuration files online here: http://209.190.22.48/fs/linksys/ I changed a few things like username/password/proxy/provisioning URL, but otherwise left everything the same as one of my real configuration files. Brian, No, our config files are static files on the filesystem served by Apache httpd (for Linksys configs and snom configs). We'll make them dynamic later, but first I want to solve this rebooting issue, which is pretty frustrating for the end users. There must be some sort of bug in Linksys and Polycom phones because they shouldn't spontaneously reboot. Even if it's a bad configuration setting or Freeswitch sending bad data, if the phone's firmware were solid, it ought to be able to handle those things gracefully rather than spontaneously rebooting. We've not had rebooting problems with the snom phones, which is nice. For Polycom phones (since I'm also having rebooting problems with the Polycoms), we also have static configs, but served via FTP rather than HTTP. Wellie, Line 51 of the config I pulled off your site, has Message_Waiting ... <Message_Waiting_1_ ua="na">No</Message_Waiting_1_> Remove this line and I bet your problem will go away. I can't think of anything else off-hand that would cause the phones to reboot due to syncing the config. Cheers, Gabe On Thu, Mar 25, 2010 at 9:25 AM, Wellie Chao <wchao@yahoo.com> wrote:
