our IAX2 support is limited. We are using our own fork of the iaxclient library from http://iaxclient.wiki.sourceforge.net/ This is the client lib used in most iax soft phones and is not suitable as-is for a server. To avoid causing commotion for the other software that uses this lib we just forked it and added our own mutexes and a few other things. (this is not a hostile fork as I have commit access on the real one. It's just because there are several experimental changes.) Even with our changes, the original lib has no trunking support and still barely qualifies to be used in a server so it's not worth it to add the support. The real solution is to write an entire IAX2 stack from scratch that actually can scale for use on a server. This is within my capability but not prudent because the IAX2 protocol is, in reality, an Asterisk Specific proprietary protocol and it wouldn't be fair for us to have a nicer IAX2 implementation than them. Not to mention, there is nearly no demand for this protocol among our user base. There was an openiax http://www.openiax.org that was underway. Maybe someday if that gets off the ground we can look at supporting it. But all signs point to the fact that we would need major motivation to expand our current iax2 support beyond what it currently is. I believe I heard in passing that FS does not currently support IAX trunking, but I'd wait for confirmation from one of the devs to be sure.

You could fund development of a new IAX stack. I know someone that is willing to write such a thing. Can you clarify WHY you use IAX? I see no reason to use it in an ITSP/Carrier arena. Maybe you can fill me in because I haven't seen it fair well under high load/high usage scenarios. For example if you have 100's of users registering you'll start to hear audio quality issues. /b On Mar 17, 2008, at 10:27 PM, Vijay Ramnarine wrote:

Trunking doesn¹t save that much bandwidth when it comes down to it... You can achieve the same effects on freeswitch by adjusting the ptimes... Example: G.711u at 20ms packetization uses 80k/sec... G.711u at 40ms only uses 72K/sec a 10% bandwidth savings... Not to mention trunking on scales so far before you start seeing delays added by trying to trunk too many calls From: Vijay Ramnarine <vjfromgt@gmail.com> Reply-To: <freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org> Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 23:36:58 -0400 To: <freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org> Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] IAX and CDR Trunking saves bandwidth how much funding are we looking at? As for CDR, there are a number of options. The CDR can be sent as XML to a webserver of your choice, or it can be saved to a textfile. I'm also doing a module that can save the CDR directly to a database (through odbc). It will probably be done this week. On Tue, Mar 18, 2008 at 6:27 AM, Ken Rice <krice@suspicious.org> wrote:

The best way to push iax development on FreeSwitch at this point is to fund the development. I hate to be the one to point that out, but while the Core FreeSwitch Developers have done a great amount of work on their own for their own reasons, nothing really motivates software development like cold hard cash ;) K From: Vijay Ramnarine <vjfromgt@gmail.com> Reply-To: <freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org> Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2008 23:27:01 -0400 To: <freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org> Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] IAX and CDR The IAX protocol is one of the bigger reason for me to use Asterisk as a switch Please tell me what I can do to help push the development thanks 2008/3/17 Anthony Minessale <anthmct@yahoo.com>:
our IAX2 support is limited. We are using our own fork of the iaxclient library from http://iaxclient.wiki.sourceforge.net/
This is the client lib used in most iax soft phones and is not suitable as-is for a server. To avoid causing commotion for the other software that uses this lib we just forked it and added our own mutexes and a few other things. Even with our changes, the original lib has no trunking support and still barely qualifies to be used in a server so it's not worth it to add the support.

Not entirely intuitive, but there are two references to IAX2 on this page:
http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Current_Status
I believe I heard in passing that FS does not currently support IAX trunking, but I'd wait for confirmation from one of the devs to be sure.

How much IAX does FS support? does it support IAX trunking?
How about CDR ?
If there is somewhere I can just go to in order to read up about these, please tell me link

tell me a price I have never used FS yet but if there is any indication of IAX i might jump on it On Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 11:32 PM, Ken Rice <krice@suspicious.org> wrote:
The best way to push iax development on FreeSwitch at this point is to fund the development.
I hate to be the one to point that out, but while the Core FreeSwitch Developers have done a great amount of work on their own for their own reasons, nothing really motivates software development like cold hard cash ;)

The IAX protocol is one of the bigger reason for me to use Asterisk as a switch Please tell me what I can do to help push the development
thanks
2008/3/17 Anthony Minessale <anthmct@yahoo.com>:
our IAX2 support is limited.
(this is not a hostile fork as I have commit access on the real one. It's just because there are several experimental changes.)
Even with our changes, the original lib has no trunking support and still barely qualifies to be used in a server so it's not worth it to add the support.
