Is there anyway to use something like the command line encoder from here?: http://asterisk.hosting.lv/ even if for testing purposes only. On Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 10:17 AM, Ken Rice <krice@suspicious.org> wrote:
Actually Digium has nothing to do with this... The whole problem is the Patents held by The G729 Consortium, and 2 other companies...
Contract Initialtion Fees, and initial Royalty payments end up making it very cost prohibitive for most people to shoulder (we're talking a nice 5 digit number just to obtain the priviledge to pay the royalties)
Can it be done yes, will it happen yes, when is the real question... Critical mass has to hit

Hi,
I think Trixter can provide a much more detailed analysis on this issue, coz If i correctly remember he has had discussion with Digium on this context in past.

How much money is it needed to get something going like the USD 10 license from digium?

There is a huge interest in G729...
The problem is the ammount of money in just getting the priviledge to pa y the royalties... Once that has been resolved G729 will show up rather quickly

I guess there's no interest in G729 at all... any good alternatives? What do you guys use to save bandwith and keep a decent audio quality?

Hi, I'd like to know what's needed to add support for G729, I know there's a bounty, but I couldn't make sense out of what's posted on the wiki. I'm really interested in this, as one of my current VoIP providers restricts me to using only this codec, which limits me to using Asterisk, hence I can't fully move to FS without G729 support. What would it take to make it happen?
Thanks,
