I feel exactly the same way. It's taken me since 2014 to figure out the
specific parts of FreeSWITCH that I need to specialize in to do what I
want to do. I'm going to put some stuff up that I've done with
mod_kazoo, because it really helped my understanding of FreeSWITCH.
Hopefully it will help others.
