You will be able to build the 1.4 branch only with Msvc 2012, we will not
be updating that branch for newer compilers, master (1.6) will support 2013
or 2015 (probably not both), we are still working on that.  Please file a
bug in jira for the missing latest release so we can address that.  There
is not a mingw build system and we don't plan on adding one.
