Debian repository out of date
Who maintains the files.freeswitch.org/repo/deb/ Debian repository? It still only has 1.2.10 as the latest release.
Ken Rice is the guy to talk to about that. I think TC is maintaining the packaging but Ken should be rolling the builds and getting them out to the repo. Mike On Sep 1, 2013, at 7:52 AM, Steven Ayre <steveayre@gmail.com> wrote:

I tried building the set of debian packages after adding the patch for freetdm - had to add some build dependencies. BUT it never built most of the packages and most of the freeswitch-mod-??? are missing. So I ran it again without the patch - no joy. I suppose there are other bits broken in the debian directory? So I have 38 packages instead of the 286 packages in the repository. I'm thinking in the current era of 4 terrebyte drives, there is little reason to break things down into so many packages. I would imagine just a few would do. I would suggest a similar approach as is done with exim - a minimal system - with a few libs and a second package to max out all the features, In the mean time - I've run into so many unexpected problems with the digium card and freetdm - (the lack of a sane configuration, documentation etc) that I ordered a grandstream box for fxo. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karl Schmidt EMail Karl@xtronics.com Transtronics, Inc. How about a link to this scrip? ( I'm assuming it isn't the one I already have? - there are two debian build scripts? )
Also, the reason for so many packages is that you don't nessecarily need all the packages for a production system, reducing the ammount of installed modules can reduce attack footprint, reduces in memory and install foot
I understand this - but you would have to enable what is installed for them to be an attack vector. My take is 286 packages is too many. Compare it to Apache - lots of complicated bits can be added - but the package count isn't even close. The bits that take up room are content - and that should be packaged in parts. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karl Schmidt EMail Karl@xtronics.com Transtronics, Inc. The scripts for both are in the source tree... For debian its the debian/util.sh script, for rhel platforms its scripts/ci/rpmbuilder.sh The whole point of the way the system is put together is you make your own config package, that via dependancies installs only the packages that you need from FS... What sense does it make to install TDM drivers if you are doing only sip? Or do you really need to install voicemail and all its related files if you are just doing a simple SBC? A basic default install is a bit over 100meg... Now that doesn't sound like a lot in a the days of 4TB HDDs, but when you are dealing with say a BeagleBoneBlack that only has 2G of flash, that's ~5% of your usable storage space, and that's not including all the the other software you have to fit on there... And I'm not the only one that would argue that 2G is a good bit of space, there are platforms out there that have 512M of flash, and it wasn't that long ago we were cramming the entire OS, and all the software you wanted to run in 16 to 32M of flash... Why is that too many? Being granular is a good thing. Besides, you can usually install with one command anyway. I think it's a great thing and thank the maintainers for going to all the trouble. Best, Gabe

I think you are missing my point - Debian will not accept 280 packages for freeswitch. Ask the ftp-masters. The packaging system is not intended to provide fine-grained granularity. Apache is quite granular - and still has a nice clean package set. You might look how they use the a2enmod to enable modules. The granularity is already a function of /etc/freeswitch/autoload_configs/modules.conf.xml

I am quite thankful to the maintainers - and my advice is an attempt to help them get freeswitch into Debian. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karl Schmidt EMail Karl@xtronics.com Transtronics, Inc. Last I heard there were concerns around some of the custom patches to upstream libraries used in FreeSWITCH that was blocking getting packages into the official repo? Thats correct, every time someone comes around suggesting we get package in the distro repos, I mention this needs to get done first and if someone wants to do the work on that then we can discuss what else is necessary to get packages upstream, and them everyone realizes its a lot of work and wanders off without offering to help, so it probably will never happen. I'm not sure it actually adds any value anyways. Mike On Sep 9, 2013, at 4:32 AM, Andrew Cassidy <andrew@cassidywebservices.co.uk> wrote:

Why is that too many? Being granular is a good thing.
I think you are missing my point - Debian will not accept 280 packages for freeswitch. Ask the ftp-masters. The packaging system is not intended to provide fine-grained granularity.
There was no discussion of Debian accepting packages or not. So, yeah, I would have missed that point.
I am quite thankful to the maintainers - and my advice is an attempt to help them get freeswitch into Debian.
They're making lots of progress in this area. Of course, any help is welcomed.

My take is 286 packages is too many. Compare it to Apache - lots of complicated bits can be added - but the package count isn't even close.
Actually, it adds a huge amount of value. Just the security implications alone are a huge deal. I think the fact that asterisk being in the distribution is a pretty big hint. The freeswitch user base would increase greatly which translates into more eyes on the code - which translates into more man power etc. etc. I can give an example of this effect - kicad, a PCB layout package, entered Debian - with-in the year they had a multiplication of programmer man power. I think Michael and Karl are talking across each other a little here. Michael is talking about getting FS' modifications to dependencies upstream and moving away from forked versions. Karl is talking about the benefits of being in distro package repos. These are different but related (as in one appears to be dependent on the other). As for the issue of backporting fixes to old releases of Debian: part of what I like about the FS project is its balancing of development velocity and stability. Sometimes the project gets this wrong: the versioning scheme having questionable (if any) semantic value, no automated integration testing (to my knowledge), etc, I think overall FS gets very close to striking the right balance between getting things fixed quickly and not being too difficult to upgrade safely. This is something Asterisk gets wrong by obsessing about maintaining bugs (such as DTMF keypresses killing a bridge...) and calling it "backward compatibility". While some extra safeguards for true BC would be nice (SemVer, testing), I don't think supporting versions several years old would be a good thing for the open source community. Of course, if someone were to package "FreeSWITCH LTS", I'm sure there would be a market for it, but this isn't something I think the core team should be fretting over at the cost of core development effort. I'm not sure it makes sense to devote developer time into evaluating security patches and back-porting to what would become very old versions of FreeSWITCH over the approx 3 year life cycle of a Debian release. If someone were to volunteer to take this burden away from the developers then it might make more sense. But if the current repository is kept fairly up-to-date I don't see what the problem is to be solved; users who don't want compile from source can use the repository and everyone else can compile the version and modules they want be that stable, master, etc. Just my .02 :-) Kevin On 09/09/2013 02:50 PM, Karl Schmidt wrote:

A couple of notes - freetdm is still missing - not a big deal to me as I plan to stop using it. And /etc/init.d/freeswitch has -g freeswitch which prevents use with the dahdi driver. There is a patch at http://xtronics.com/uploads/init-diff.patch to change it. My hunch is this is really a problem in freetdm which I'm no longer going to waste time with. Also, the reason for so many packages is that you don't nessecarily need all the packages for a production system, reducing the ammount of installed modules can reduce attack footprint, reduces in memory and install foot print for small machines (read embedded like raspberry pi, not everyone has
250G of storage capacity everywhere they might run freeswitch from debian packages)
Theres a lot of other things in there also... People complaing about building the centos RPMs for the same reason, they try to just run the some command that's used to build ${random} RPM and wonder why it doesn't work... You have to keep in mind that we arent just building packages for 1 version of any package system we're building version for multiple platforms and multiple versions of those platforms, and then multiple variants... Example for centos we build for centos 5 and 6, then we build 32 and 64 bit versions there For debian we build for Squeeze thru Sid and then build 32 and 64 bit versions there, just those 2 platforms alone account for something like a dozen different builds of the same things...
I would suggest a similar approach as is done with exim - a minimal system - with a few libs and a second package to max out all the features,
In the mean time - I've run into so many unexpected problems with the digium card and freetdm - (the lack of a sane configuration, documentation etc) that I ordered a grandstream box for fxo.

I totally agree... Speaking about platforms; are there users who run (or have experience running) FreeSWITCH on FreeBSD/OpenBSD? In particular OpenBSD (I like the robust 'secure by default' approach). If so, please share your results with me/us. -- EL
