High density freeswitch potential deployment using Sangoma 16 x E1 TDM cards (A116DE)
To Freeswitch users, I currently consulting to a client in UK where they could potentially move off their current proprietary IVR to either an external hosted IVR supplier or keep it in-house with a more modern IVR. I am putting together a proposal (in basic terms as follows) and wished to get some "real-world" feedback: 2 x new servers Each with: Freeswitch (latest stable release) Windows 7 Pro (minimum) - It has to be Windows (initially) since they are a "Windows house" still Sangoma 16 x E1 PCI-express (with echo cancellation DSP daughter board) TDM card (A116DE) Scripting language on Freeswitch preference: Lua My questions are as follows: 1) Has anyone used Freeswitch with this level of density on Sangoma TDM hardware (ie. Potential for 480 concurrent calls)? a. Does the Sangoma DSP echo cancellation daughter board get fully utilised by FreeSWITCH (via the FreeTDM interface) - ie. Offloading DTMF detection etc...? 2) Would there be any issues in using Lua with potentially 480 concurrent calls? 3) Can anyone suggest a minimum hardware spec for this (CPU, memory)? I appreciate any assistance on this topic so that this project can get off the ground. Kind Regards, Andrew Keil
Another questions ... ( and maybe im just ignorant to this ) Has anyone used Freeswitch on windows, at this scale ?!? Also if you HAD to go windows, surely you would use a windows server variant... not their desktop OS ?!! The real questions here come down to your application, how many DB calls, what other services you interact with. If its IVR with lots of playback, then you want to store the recordings on a RAM disk, or SSD at minimum. Also pre-transcode all your recordings to G711, to avoid realtime transcoding. Jay, Thanks for your “quick” reply. Regarding your comments. I also hope they will go to the server variant of Windows, however based on the way Freeswitch is put together I do not see much difference between running it on a Windows server vs. Windows client machine. The applications are varied, however they all require: - G711 –A-law audio playback/record (since E1) - so no transcoding - DTMF detection - Database access (via ODBC to SQL server) – I am currently looking at using the Freeswitch pooled database approach rather than the lua database modules. - General string and number handling – which lua would do very well - TCP socket communication - No text to speech or speech recognition - Limited conference requirements (ie. Inbound call conferenced with an outbound call on the same server) Andrew From: freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org [mailto:freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org] On Behalf Of jay binks Sent: Friday, 24 October 2014 9:44 AM To: FreeSWITCH Users Help Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] High density freeswitch potential deployment using Sangoma 16 x E1 TDM cards (A116DE) Another questions ... Hi Andrew, I can only tell you about the Lua calls handling (because I have no clue for the rest): no way that the Lua part can be your bottleneck on this project. Florent 2014-10-24 1:17 GMT+02:00 Andrew Keil <andrew.keil@visytel.com>:

Hi, I don't know if my experience will be useful but we have a running installation with 5 x A108E Sangoma Boards for a total of 40 E1 (1200 TDM channels) and it works fine with any issue. We do a mix of IVR and ISDN-SIP bridging. Our server is old (HP DL380 with two xeon 5520 and 16Gb ram) so a couple of new CPUs (for example xeon E5-2650V2) will handle your load for sure.
