Hello, I have a lot of former Asterisk users really miffed about the lack of folders in Freeswitch voice mail. I noticed in the database table voicemail_msgs there is a folder column that is always inbox. Is this used for anything? How hard would it be to implement some sort of mechanism that would let you tag a voice mail message as being part of a specific folder, then search those folders later on for playback? Thanks! -Tim

I'll either donate, or I'll just do it and contribute it back. It may end up being MY implementation of voice mail, but it will be in lua so people can change it however they want.
Thats one way to step up and get involved... bravo! Wish more people had that attitude. /b On Sep 20, 2010, at 6:31 PM, Tim St. Pierre wrote:

I know this isn't a direct answer for your question, but I always tell people to have it emailed to them as well, and then they can file it in their email folders, which is infinitely easier to search. Personally I've never understood people that use huge folders of voicemail. How the heck do you search through 90 messages in a timely manner? -----Original Message----- From: freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org [mailto:freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org] On Behalf Of Tim St. Pierre Sent: Sunday, September 19, 2010 11:24 PM To: FreeSWITCH Users Help Subject: [Freeswitch-users] Voice mail folders Hello, I have a lot of former Asterisk users really miffed about the lack of folders in Freeswitch voice mail. The quick answer is YOU DON'T. The best corse of action is email it... and sort it all there. Personally I can't stand voicemail... I don't leave voicemail for people because I hate playing tag. I'll email or sms before I'll leave a voicemail. /b On Sep 20, 2010, at 9:03 AM, Peder wrote:

@Brian, bounty makes a sense, but you just hate something is not the solution to some problem :). On Mon, Sep 20, 2010 at 7:07 PM, Brian West <brian@freeswitch.org> wrote:

I have the same problem for Fax, but unfortunately some people are difficult to convince they should use email instead. Tim: You could also implement your own custom voicemail system using some lua script or similar! It's just another IVR after all. François. On Mon, 2010-09-20 at 10:08 -0500, Brian West wrote:

Yep loading up a 352 page PDF into the fax system and really having an expectation of that actually making it to the far end is quit amusing. /b On Sep 20, 2010, at 11:05 AM, François Delawarde wrote:

I wonder why nobody calls their cellphone provider with this type of complaint. I have never had any pay service version of voicemail that uses folders. I added a folder column in case I wanted to implement it some day but I was not in a rush to do so because having folders causes an instant dependency on some type of advanced UI (besides the telephone keypad which is the least common denominator). But I am well used to everyone being perfectly happy with services they pay $100 a month for and getting "miffed" about free software. That's a daily occurrence around here. The difference is that if you call Tmobile (ATT/Verizon,etc) and bitch, they will just ignore it. If enough people complain here, you will get tired of hearing it and just add the feature. :-) You are a victim of your own efficiency. I remember a couple of years ago when someone was complaining that they wanted YAML and how great it would be. You got tired of hearing about it and came back about 4 hours later and said "here's your YAML parser". I've never seen any product or project that can match that type of turnaround for new features. -----Original Message----- From: freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org [mailto:freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org] On Behalf Of Anthony Minessale Sent: Monday, September 20, 2010 11:16 AM To: FreeSWITCH Users Help Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] Voice mail folders I wonder why nobody calls their cellphone provider with this type of complaint. Yes, I have that problem with fax too! The only system I have ever seen with folders is Asterisk, but that's what I'm migrating from, so it still gets used. I think I will go ahead and build something in lua. It's not that hard given that all the required data is already in a database and I don't have to parse anything. Once I'm done playing messages and moving them around, etc. How do I tell freeswitch to update the message counts on the phones? Is there some sort of event I can fire that will update the MWI to whatever is in the database? Thanks! -Tim François Delawarde wrote:

I'm not sure either. The people that are real e-mail users tend not to care about the lack of folders. The people who want them (they are few) are folks that aren't really computer savvy, don't have speakers on their workstation (maybe it's an x terminal in a lot of cases), or they don't have a computer nearby (people that work in warehouses, kitchens, etc).
