time_test on Centos 5.5
Hi, I am testing FreeSWITCH on a Centos 5.5. The hardware is a 32 bit AMD Opteron 275. On the system I recognize a avg of 2000 if I run the time_test 1000 application. Currently I have no audio problems but I want to make sure that the system works well. There are 4 possible options: - Try to update the kernel to a newer one - Try to use debian. - Try to use the kernel-rt (realtime kernel from Centos) - Set some nice kernel options. Which? What do you think is the better solution? Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Louis
Louis, check that your kernel is compiled with the 1000hz timer (it should with Centos). You have no audio issues as long as what you do does not require mixing audio. Try to call a conference room, and from the CLI, play an audio file to the conf room. With a bad timer, I had issues that easily. Stay away from Debian, Centos is the right choice. You could eventually try to fallback to centos 5.3 or 5.4. Are you sure this processor is 32 bits ? All info I find says it's 64bits, so you coul try a 64 bits kernel. Debian can work if that's what people want to use. I have it working well on a few lenny machines.

Can anyone testify that as stated in the installation instructions on FS Wiki for compiling it on Debian, the kernel still needs to be configured with "CONFIG_HZ_1000=y" and "CONFIG_HZ=1000" If so, then how does one go about re-configuring to create a custom kernel? I know I can google but if someone has a quick 2 liner on it that'll save me some time ;) I see this in my machine: #> grep CONFIG_HZ config-2.6.32-5-sparc64 | grep 1000 # CONFIG_HZ_1000 is not set

I'd like to know if this a good/recommomended idea as well. I'd be happy to write up the procedure for changing the Debian kernel if this change makes a big difference to FreeSWITCH. Not sure how the timerfd stuff fits into this CONFIG_HZ issue, either. Regards,
I think its relative to each kernel version. The safe bet is to enable the 1000hz timer because 1ms is the least amount of time FS needs to sleep. Sometimes when you have a kernel that runs even faster the performance goes down due to the extra cycles. All I can say is test everything. Try it both ways with 1000hz and however the default is and if you support timerfd try that too. param enable-softtimer-timerfd set to true in switch.conf.xml and/or using mod_timer_fd and setting rtp_timer_name=timerfd in your sofia profile. Ok, Thanks Anthony. The default on my system was 250Hz. Have changed that and re-compiled the kernel. Will try out both and see what happens. BTW, do we need timerfd in conjunction with the 1000hz timer set in the kernel or is it either/or? As in does it affect positively or negatively if we leave the kernel at 250Hz and enable timerfd as the timing source? Thanks
The timerfd stuff is experimental so play around and see. with 1000hz timer you don't need timerfd but it won't hurt. Its very dependant on the motherboard and cpu etc. On Apr 8, 2011 11:46 AM, "A E [Gmail]" <all.eforums@gmail.com> wrote:

Ok Cool. Will report back once I can get this going. Right now I can't even get FS to compile on this platform. It can't find the libssl and I have all packages installed. Like it finds it, but complains that those ones are incompatible perhaps coz they're 32-bit and I'm trying to compile it using the 64-bit switches fed to the configure switch. Ugh...wasted so much time on this :(

Hi, yeah, your right. It's a 64 bit processor. Is it possible to "downgrade" to Centos 5.3? I found only the DVD from Centos 5.3 but the machine is within a server farm and therefore a netinstall is much easier. Did someone tried the kernel-rt package?
