Can you please post your FreeSWITCH(tm) log with sip trace of the call (start freeswith with TPORT_LOG=1) so we can see what it is doing. (might want to obscure passwords). Mike

Has anyone tried to use FreeSwitch with Broadvoice? I'm having no luck getting it to authenticate.

I didn't know about TPORT_LOG=1 until now; here's the output attached (my real password is replaced with "myPassword"). I think that FreeSwitch is attempting to REGISTER repeatedly and not sending authentication, though the log message says that it is. I used WireShark to grab everything. Looking at all the SIP traffic, I see FreeSwitch attempting to REGISTER multiple times. After each request, Broadvoice replies with "401 Unauthorized" but FreeSwitch tries the exact same "REGISTER" again with no authentication. After about ten seconds, Broadvoice just stops responding altogether, which is understandable, but makes debugging difficult. After some unknown timeout, it'll start responding to requests from my host again. In contrast, I did get FreeSwitch to register and authenticate my Stanaphone account. I configured it just like Broadvoice, but with stanaphone, com and the appropriate username and password. Looking at the WireShark capture of that process, I could see FreeSwitch sending a REGISTER request, stanaphone.com responding with "401 Unauthorized" and FreeSwitch sending a second REGISTER request with appropriate authentication. So, there seems to be something different about Broadvoice that confuses FreeSwitch and prevents it from sending authentication even though it thinks it is. I don't understand exactly how the authentication works, but I did notice that in the "401 Unauthorized" response stanaphone.com sends, it has a line: -----------------snip------------------- WWW-Authenticate: Digest realm="stanaphone.com", nonce="461f750009e560e064b2f288a44e7482b6b109bb" -----------------snip------------------- Broadvoice's "401 Unauthorized" response has this line: -----------------snip------------------- WWW-Authenticate: DIGEST realm="BroadWorks",qop="auth",algorithm=MD5,nonce="BroadWorksXf0glpnawTune6wdBW" -----------------snip------------------- I don't know what "qop" means or whether "DIGEST" is case sensitive, but I'm guessing that the problem has something to do with those authentication parameters. I have succeed in registering with Broadvoice using Asterisk using the instructions from the broadvoice.com site. However, I'm completely new to Asterisk and its configuration is somewhat confusing to me. I don't know how to translate the configuration directly to FreeSwitch, since a number of the Asterisk parameters don't seem to exist in FreeSwitch. I thought all the parameters I'd need to configure were gateway name, username, and password, as that worked for Stanaphone. Thanks for your help.

If I'm correct, you just found the problem yourself: While Stanaphone uses the obvious "stanaphone.com" as its realm, BroadVoice uses "BroadWorks" instead, and so you'll need to update that in your config.

Asterisk has some logic to find the realm itself, so even if you give it a bogus realm (or no realm at all), it still manages to do the right thing. FreeSWITCH is far more transparent in its configuration, which IMHO is really cool, but it also creates its share of surprises :-) Enjoy, - Dave

You may be right, though I don't think so, since FreeSwitch reports that it's authenticating to Broadvoice using a realm of "BroadWorks". This line appears in FreeSwitch's output that I've already sent: ------------------------snip----------------------------------------- 2007-04-14 07:36:51 [DEBUG] sofia_reg.c:650 sofia_reg_handle_sip_r_challenge() Authenticating 'FreeSWITCH' with 'DIGEST:"BroadWorks":7046700 027:myPassword'. ------------------------snip----------------------------------------- The problem seems to be that FreeSwitch is lying to me: it says that it's authenticating, but in the SIP REGISTER request it sends (which also appears in FreeSwitch's output) there's no mention of authentication: send 559 bytes to udp/[147.135.12.128]:5060 at 11:36:51.671054: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ REGISTER sip:sip.broadvoice.com SIP/2.0 Via: SIP/2.0/UDP 71.75.114.79;rport;branch=z9hG4bK10ByS4atpUHaB Max-Forwards: 70 From: <sip:7046700027@sip.broadvoice.com>;tag=0m9SDU72DH0KQ To: <sip:7046700027@sip.broadvoice.com> Call-ID: 475b4102-651f-122a-a69b-00609733d6f0 CSeq: 82156970 REGISTER Contact: <sip:7046700027@71.75.114.79:5060> Expires: 60 User-Agent: FreeSWITCH(mod_sofia) Allow: INVITE, ACK, BYE, CANCEL, OPTIONS, PRACK, MESSAGE, SUBSCRIBE, NOTIFY, REFER, UPDATE, REGISTER, INFO Supported: 100rel, precondition, path Content-Length: 0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I will try specifying "BroadWorks" explicitly as the realm to see if it makes any difference.

This is the packet after the challenge; it looks just like the first one, which I'm sure is buggy behavior. I already posted the entire output from FreeSwitch in a previous message, which was so big it had to be approved by an admin, but I can post part of it again in case you didn't get that message. send Asterisk has some logic to find the realm itself, so even if you give it a bogus realm (or no realm at all), it still manages to do the right thing. FreeSWITCH is far more transparent in its configuration, which IMHO is really cool, but it also creates its share of surprises :-)

Apparently, FreeSwitch tries to look up "BroadWorks" in DNS and doesn't find anything, because that's not an existing DNS name.

I don't think that is what is going on. Have these guys never heard of freakin SRV records. :P
That is exactly what's going on; what do you find if you look up the name "BroadWorks" in DNS? There's no TLD called "BroadWorks" so I don't see how it could succeed. I captured all the traffic with Wireshark and I can see that FreeSwitch does SRV lookups and gets a negative response. I have noticed that when I use my Sipura ATA with Broadvoice, it uses a special Broadvoice nameserver, so it's possible that that nameserver resolves the name "BroadWorks". Is the realm supposed to be a DNS name? I don't fully understand how the authentication works. Though Asterisk does seem to work with Broadvoice, it does seem that Broadvoice is pickier and more difficult to use than other services, so I may decide to switch to a different one.
If you can get on IRC and provide me with your account details with broadvoice then we can proceed but without that I can't really even start to have this issue looked at I need to lab this up for Anthony to look at. /b On Apr 15, 2007, at 10:40 PM, Jonathan Rogers wrote:

Ok I was going to signup for an account but I refuse to pay 39.95 for the activation fee for an account i'm only going to use for a few hours while we test and fix this. If you're willing to donate your account you can email me your details and we'll take a look at it... I know broadvoice doesn't do anything at all the "standard" way even with asterisk its a nice round about way of putting things in /etc/ hosts and various other non-standard things. /b On Apr 15, 2007, at 10:40 PM, Jonathan Rogers wrote:

Yeah, I wasn't really satisfied with the Asterisk setup either, especially with all extra settings that I don't fully understand and adding stuff to /etc/hosts. I've been using this account for a couple of years with no major problems. When I first got it, I just used the provisioning auto configuration feature to set up my Sipura ATA and everything Just Worked (tm) even through my NAT and firewall without any specific knowledge or configuration on my part. However, recently, incoming calls stopped working for no obvious reason, as I hadn't changed any relevant configuration that I know of. I emailed Broadvoice tech support and they didn't seem to know anything useful. That problem as well as a desire to bridge SIP calls with Jingle prompted me to try FreeSWITCH and then Asterisk. I do want to help, but at the moment, I have Asterisk working for both incoming and outgoing calls and I am depending on the Broadvoice account for incoming calls to my local number. Maybe I can get an account with another, easier to configure provider and transfer my number, at which point I can donate the Broadvoice account for testing. I don't have any experience with local number portability or whatever it's called, so I don't know how easy or quick it is to transfer.

The problem with certain companies is that they try to do things in a "cool" or interesting or useful or whatever way, but they never bother to think about the support nightmare they're creating for their friends over at minimum wage (or worse, overseas - out of sight, out of mind) tech support.

The LNP (Local Number Portability) motto is: "Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a Snickers!" I've been through about a dozen ports already for various numbers, and while some have taken as little as two or three hours, others have taken nearly half a year. Also, I'm not sure if BV will let you transfer out a number that they assigned you. (You see, the FCC doesn't require telecom providers to transfer your number, just to support the infrastructure for transferring your number if the stars line up right, _and_ they feel like doing it for you.) Yeah, I've read a little about LNP and realized it may not be worth it. I don't receive a lot of incoming calls to that number, so it may make more sense for me to just use a new number if I decide to move away from BroadVoice.
