I am looking to do some tests from my Freeswitch box to 2-3 sip clients over the WAN. This will only be a test and not for production. Is there a way to get g729 for free for testing purpose, or maybe a trial version. We will need the ability to make and receive calls on the sip clients from both internal and external callers. If the project goes into production we will buy the appropriate lic for it. Thanks,
You can pass g729 through using mod_g729. The only time you need a licence and mod_g729_com is if you need freeswitch to break into the media stream to record the call or to do voicemail, etc. On 29 November 2013 15:03, Joli Martinez <mrjoli021@gmail.com> wrote:

I do not believe that any such trial licensing exists for this capability. However, the licensing is rather reasonable, and you would be helping the project by obtaining the required licenses. They seem to be $10 US per channel. http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Mod_com_g729 http://www.freeswitch.org/node/249 -Yossi On 11/29/2013 11:28 AM, Joli Martinez wrote:

The only issue with the current model is that there is no real easy way to manage the licenses, so if you buy 3 for your testing server and then decide you want to go to a production model you need to then purchase another set leaving your 3 original licenses dormant. I think it would be a "nice to have" if we could somehow reissue licenses so when you retire an old server you can move your licenses to another server. Over the years I have purchased in excess of 100 channels and I think I am only using probably half of them as a bulk are linked against old servers that I have decommissioned. I think the patent owners of G729 get enough money for G729 without us giving them extra money when we already own licenses. This is going back a few years, but Howler Technologies used to have a site based model where you could pool the licenses together and have multiple servers use the licenses, perhaps this is why they went out of business, I never really found out what happened there just one day my licenses expired! Site licences are a nice idea, but usually a PITA in reality. They are the norm for CAD, and anyone who has worked in design will have had days when the sat around because the licencing was all messed up. You really don't want that in telephony, so we didn't attempt to offer site licencing. I am interested in what happened to your Howler licences. They supplied some time limited licences, but you seem to be saying your licences were supposed to be perpetual. Its rather naughty if they were sold as perpetual, but were not. The only way is ethics. Regards, Steve
Sorry - To clarify I think I might have been using one the annual license options they had and I was 6 months into the 12 month option and license just stopped working overnight. The licensing server used to periodically contact their server and I think after about a month of unable to reach them the licensing server would stop functioning. When they went into liquidation I think everything got pretty much turned off without notice. I possibly had perpetual licenses with them as well as I was moving to the site model as it worked out more cost effective when you ran multiple servers. I think this must have been around 3 years ago, fortunately at the time they closed down FreeSWITCH started offering G729 directly so the switch over was as simple as putting my paypal details on the order form and I was able to get back up and running. I certainly agree the site model does have it's issues especially if you only had a single license server, but I still think that it should be possible to reissue licenses, perhaps you put a limit on how many times it can be done. I think Vestec do this with their ASR licenses, but this might have changed I haven't looked at Vestec for about 12 months. Ash.
