freeswitch directories moved
Who's idea was it to move the freeswitch directories in the RPM and why? Is it too much to ask that directories are standardized and don't change?! Do you know how distruptive it is when you move all the config files from /opt to /etc.! Not only that but the hierarchy has been changed. The /conf directory has been removed even though it's in all the documentation on the Freeswitch wiki. Wtf? I am used to config files being in /etc for Asterisk. Despite all the disadvantages with Asterisk at least they are sticking with that decision! Of course if I compile from scratch I suppose I can choose the directory myself but for various reasons I used the RPM so I don't have much choice in the matter unless I want to make my own RPM which isn't very good use of my time imho. But wait, it gets worse! Whoever made this decision decided just moving everything and getting rid of /conf directory was not disruptive enough. So they decided to split it up and leave the sound files where they are in /opt/freeswitch. Again, wtf?!
Normally I would have slapped this email down for being unnecessarily trollish, however if we s/emotions//g and get to the core of the issue then I think we can have a productive discussion. Since I personally was not involved in the decisions on the RPMs I will simply moderate the discussion. Please everyone, let's keep the discussion civil and on point. -MC On Mon, Jun 18, 2012 at 3:01 PM, shadowym <shadowym@hotmail.com> wrote:

Nothing trollish about a user unhappy about a decision they STRONGLY disagree with. But it gets even worse again. Not only have directories been moved and hierarchy changed. Some of the default config files haven't been updated to reflect the moves. So now you have configs moved to a different directory, hierarchy changed which makes it non standard from ALL the freeswitch documentation, splitting of sound files which were left in original location, and incorrect directoy setttings in configuration files. Does this directory changes apply to the Git & install. I mean retrieve the source and build our self. Thanks Lloyd On Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 10:50 AM, shadowym <shadowym@hotmail.com> wrote:

From what you say below, it is a case of standardization indeed, as Linux policy is to _have_ all conf files into /etc/.
Do you know how distruptive it is when you move all the config files from /opt to /etc.!
OMFG, what a PITA to do a: mv /opt/whatever /etc/freeswitch, indeed².

I guess your typing has been done under hot conditions - and this can happen to anybody one day or another. However, consider all the devs people work, what they're doing for YOU (the user, that just have to modify a bit a complete native conf to get a fully operative switch), the sweat they put in fixing some quirks sometimes in minutes and you'll begin to see how offensive your words are: "somebody" reversed the order of your FREE lunch, fork, knive & spoon and you're going off the deep end for THAT? In france, we have a swell stock phrase for that: "faire un caca nerveux" (literally: to make a nervous caca-poo). So, please tell them it just a hot and epidermic reaction, no? The project is currently in a feature freeze working towards a version 1.2 release. As part of this the Redhat and Debian packages are being improved and standardised to be compliant with the various FHS requirements. The move to /etc is precisely part of the standardisation that you are so desperate for. Sound files are data and don't belong in /etc, personally I'd say they belong under /usr along with the test of the FreeSWITCH binaries - if they're still in /opt then (without following the work the rpm maintainer us doing) its probably a transition that's still in progress. If this caught you by surprise, then you should always be testing a setup before putting it into production. Once 1.2 is released it'll become the stable branch and offer far fewer surprises. Hi guys Shadowym, I think you are overreacting about this. I started with FS using GIT, when rpm package where announced I decided to wait until the were more mature. You can not expect you will get a new feature or etc and it will work as you imagine at the first time. You found some "issues" with rpm packages then your resolved by your self, so, why you make a more positive work and wikify it? Your complain is not helping this wonderful project. I agree with AVI, if the rpm developers could include some sort of change log ("big/important changes") will be helpful for all. At the end, you are the only responsible for what you do, so, if you decided to try rpm packages and find it some differences respect GIT then don't complain just inform about it in the best way possible what is wrong, so SwK could make the respective corrections, if they apply. Did the announcement also say they were getting rid of the conf directory and not bothering to updated directory settings in the default conf files (that are now in the root directory). Do they plan to update all the freeswitch documentation now as well which talks about the conf directory all over the place? How long ago was this announcement made? The issue is not about being caught off guard btw. It's about why and how it's being done. Dude, I have been trying not to follow this thread but I can't avoid it because it keeps showing up on my mail client over and over again. Stop bitching and DO SOMETHING. This is open source, not something you've bought or that someone is trying to sell you. Your demanding tone is irritating to say the very least. You don't like that someone changed a few dirs and did not make the work like you expected, then just freaking FIX IT and contribute the solution. None of the developers have time to write documentation and they struggle to keep their day jobs while making it work for the rest of the world as well and you sit on your comfy place complaining that they are not doing enough? WTF? SwK is 1 person that has been doing the stable branch as well as trying to package freeswitch to several distros, he could definitely use some help instead of aggressiveness and complaints. Contribute and hop in or live with what you have or just leave quiet but DON'T piss on everyones else's work. You want to be disappointed, that's OK, but you gotta earn it first. What have you done for the project so far? Sorry to the list for my email but everything has its limits and I tend to be nice most of the times. -- João Mesquita Sent with Sparrow (http://www.sparrowmailapp.com/?sig) On Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 11:57 AM, shadowym wrote:

Perhaps. I'll give Shadowym the opportunity to respond to JMesquita's post. Again, distilling out the emotion it comes down to this: if you want a say in how things work then get involved. If the OP is willing to do that then great. Let's see how it shakes out. -MC On Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 1:45 PM, Brian Foster <bdfoster@endigotech.com>wrote:

You're quite entitled to be unhappy with a decision. The problem is, the more times you reenforce your arrogant snotty superiority with the members of the mailing list, the less productive things get. Your last comment about how you were waiting for someone to play the "this is open source you ungrateful bastard" card is astonishing. What card would you expect to play against the "I am an entitlist user of your software trolling on the list because you have inadvertently forced me to do some work" card? Just because its spec files doesn't make the process any different. If you found a crash bug, would you get mad because you updated to this broken version or file a JIRA and get it fixed? If you are unhappy with a change, you need to report it to the proper channels and be willing to live with the decisions made to resolve your issue. Frankly, I started this project for me. I have been working on it for 8 years now and we were recently given the opportunity to bring in a dedicated individual to work over those spec files and make them as compliant as possible with all the other angry people complaining about the ones you like. We are not going to pass up this chance to get organized and separate the code into a stable branch with packages that fit in with most environments. I don't even use those packages so I have little concern with where the files go. I learned long ago to try not to let that bother me or every linux distro on earth would put me in the loony bin.
