I did get this working by changing the owner of the device to freeswitch.
This does not make sense as asterisk was able to access the device by being a member of the dialout group.
I'm wondering if this is a problem in freetdm ?
FreeSWITCH behaviour is the same as Asterisk's: freeswitch -u <USER> => Run as <USER> using that user's primary group and supplemental groups freeswitch -u <USER> -g <GROUP> => Run as <USER> and <GROUP>, not using any supplemental groups so you might want to check what the init script is doing (to get the list of groups ids of the running process: grep Groups: /proc/`pidof freeswitch`/status) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.20 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iEYEARECAAYFAlHl1FcACgkQjiIIAK4rYUr4BQCfaE5weAymZoMPEPVyQ7Tx9RWG 2TgAn2+4mfsPF8LN6OCU0qrbySrlhIWe =SJYv -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
