Perfect! Thanks. For anyone interested (I am using Ubuntu 14.04) apt-get install sipsak sipsak -vv -s sip:nobody@<remotehostip> -H <myhostip> returns ---------------------------------------- message received: SIP/2.0 403 OPTIONS not supported Via: SIP/2.0/UDP 176.9.31.72:44348;branch=z9hG4bK.4055e4ae;rport=44348;alias From: sip:sipsak@176.9.31.72:44348;tag=756fa4c0 To: sip:nobody@87.238.73.137;tag=c97b4d1cb1f3d0da549e06a8d482ef63.4f7a Call-ID: 1970250944@176.9.31.72 CSeq: 1 OPTIONS Server: OpenSIPS (1.5.1-notls (i386/linux)) Content-Length: 0 ** reply received after 17.348 ms ** SIP/2.0 403 OPTIONS not supported final received ---------------------------------------- So it's that 17.348 that I'm interested in. in debian you can use sipsak.

FreeSWITCH can do the ping (configure a gateway with ping=true), but doesn't look at RTT.
You might also be able to do it with sipp.
I've implemented a SIP OPTIONS ping client in the past with a custom Perl script using Net::SIP and it'd be trivial to measure RTT, but no longer have the code. But it'd be quite simple to do. There'll be Python libraries for SIP out there too.

I want to get an idea of how well connected my fs boxes are to certain SIP servers that we use. The idea might be to send a SIP options packet to a remote address and time how long it took to respond.
I suspect that fs can do something like this, but I was also wondering if there exists an off-the-shelf Linux package (a bit like mrt) that can do this. Failing that, some code in (say) PHP that can do it?
I would have some kind of scheduled job that would send out a SIP options packet every 10s or so and keep track of the rtt.
