I'm in a similar situation where I need to disable VAD because the other end will disconnect the call if the RTP stops. I've tried the setting Anthony suggested as well as several others I've found on the wiki, but I've not been able to get it to work. The variables I've been trying are listed below. suppress-cng suppress_cng rtp_disable_vad_out rtp_disable_vad_in bridge_generate_comfort_noise send_silence_when_idle For my test calls I'm just playing back sound files with sleep in-between them and I see no RTP when calling sleep. I'm using tcpdump and wireshark to analyze the calls. -Justin Richey jrichey@ITLtd.net -----Original Message----- From: freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org [mailto:freeswitch-users-bounces@lists.freeswitch.org]On Behalf Of covici@ccs.covici.com Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2010 1:26 AM To: FreeSWITCH Users Help Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] sip stack problem in fsw Thanks for the suggestion -- unfortunately it did not work -- I put it in the internal profile, but it seems to have had no effect. I did see that the cng packets were 0. Anthony Minessale <anthony.minessale@gmail.com> wrote:
by suppressing it, you will not negotiate it with anybody so your phone will not try to use vad which is what causes your problems

Well, I am slightly confused here -- yes I am silent because I am muted listening to a conference call. If I enable supress-cng, am I not surpressing the comfort noise or have I gotten its meaning wrong?

Asterisk is not capable of async RTP and CNG so it's lack of functionality is a feature in your case and it's probably the same platform your provider is using.
Sending RTP for no reason when you are not talking is somewhat silly right?
Are you actually remaining silent for that period of 5 min? Did you get the trace and prove it?
you can do the following if you wish to mimic asterisk
add this to your sofia profile in internal.xml
<param name="supress-cng" value="true"/>
restart the profile or FS
this will tell your phone and your isp not to use cng

But if I use asterisk with the same endpoint -- which has no configuration for cng setting -- it works whereas with fsw it does not -- this is the purpose of my inquiry.
Anthony Cosgrove <acosgrov@gmail.com> wrote:
Ahh ok this makes more sense. Your provider is probably terminating the call due to lack of RTP packets. You will need to configure your endpoint(s) to generate the cng. Most likely what is happening is that your endpoint(s) are configured to not transmit silence so there's no RTP data for that period. 5 minutes and you're out.

OK, I will do something, but my provider did tell me that this was the cause of the hangup -- comfort noise or rather lack thereof. Is there any way to get fs to generate such -- I did see cng packets 15 at the end of the call.
