      Hi,

thanks for the replies, you are spot on Iskren.  I had ended up with the 
HEAD as 1.4.4 and v1.4.stable do not exist.  Using just v1.4 works 
perfectly.  I was about to add some of this to the wiki but cannot 
remember my password and the forgotten details link is not working due 
to the database being locked. :)

git clone git://git.freeswitch.org/freeswitch.git
cd freeswitch
git checkout tags/v1.4.4
or whichever is the current stable release.
You can view all tags (which are something like individual releases) with
git tag
or view the branches (which are something like the versions with the 
latest fixes) with
git branch -a
Since there's no "v1.4.stable" branch you end up with the HEAD revision.
Someone from the team has to back me up here, but I think the current 
stable is v1.4, so a command like
git clone -b v1.4 git://git.freeswitch.org/freeswitch.git
Should do it.
