[Freeswitch-docs] Channel variables page
hi, the channel variables page is getting extremely long and difficult to view and to edit. Maybe it makes sense to split it by modules? Whenever I need to check some variable, I search it in google and then click on the old wiki page :-)
this makes sense for variables that are module specific. Take the mod_conference page I recently revamped. The problem is, many variables are not specific to a module. What is a good way to handle this issue? On Saturday, March 28, 2015, Stanislav Sinyagin <ssinyagin@gmail.com> wrote:

those that are not specific to modules, are basically in the core switch module :) So, we can call them core switch variables, and dedicate a page to them. On Sun, Mar 29, 2015 at 1:17 AM, Michael Jerris <mike@jerris.com> wrote:

I'm fine with this. Certainly any that are specifc to individual modules make more sense on those module pages. Need to be a bit careful with the ton of rtp and media variables that we don't try to stick those just in sofia. It might make sense to reference those on the Sofia page with links to their home. I still haven't started with this work, hopefully I find some time soon. is there any "draft" mode that allows to lock the current production page and create the new pages that are hidden from external viewer until completion? On Sun, Mar 29, 2015 at 1:22 AM, Michael Jerris <mike@jerris.com> wrote:

Confluence has a means to restrict viewing of a page to particular groups. I used that once to restrict viewing to the editors group, but I figured it would be nice for people to see the work in progress so I put it back to global or all groups or whatever. In the upper right corner use Tools -> Restrictions and please set it to the editors group rather than just yourself, in case you get hit by a bus or sumpin. :-) I just saw my notes about two different edits of the dialplan pages started by two different people. There's good stuff in both and I have the unenviable task of merging them manually. Bote

ha, there are actually two pages, "Channel Variables" and "Variables" with some overlapping information. Another question -- "Last Revised" information in Variables contains some really old SVN revisions. I guess this whole revision information is obsolete, and one can easily find it with git commands if needed. I propose to delete that from confluence. Yes, there are even comments in a lot of the examples and narratives that were written on the wiki that note that "this only applies after revision xyz" which becomes quickly dated. If it is documented, then it must apply to whatever code you can get now, so such notes don't have much value to me. There are rare cases where modules are abandoned because nobody came forward to maintain them, but that is a special case that doesn't apply here. *** Are "Channel Variables" and "Variables" two distinct pages or are they the same page formatted differently? I was complaining about that yesterday when I saw it, but if they are both good pages then I will shutup :-) Thanks! Bote

here I started to work on variables, and also adding some missing explanations: https://freeswitch.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=7766277 Question -- is there a way to order the children differently than just by alphabet?
Are "Channel Variables" and "Variables" two distinct pages or are they the same page formatted differently? I was complaining about that yesterday when I saw it, but if they are both good pages then I will shutup :-)
those are two distinct pages, the first one explains how variables are used in general, and then it lists some specific variables and repeats the content of "Variales" page. As soon as I get the catalog of variables to a usable state, I will remove duplicates. I think also the page titles need to be a bit different, like "Channel variables explained" or something.
One thing we started to do is for module specific vars, we are documenting those on the module page. an example is mod_conference. we should probably do this all the places where it makes sense and they are not applicable to multiple things On Saturday, June 13, 2015, Stanislav Sinyagin <ssinyagin@gmail.com> wrote:

Yes, it totally makes sense to concentrate everything that belongs to a module in one place - including mod_sofia. On Jun 14, 2015 2:38 AM, "Michael Jerris" <mike@jerris.com> wrote:

actually Sofia-related things are spread in two different sections, and they probably overlap. I found the way to move pages around in the hierarchy, so I'll finalize the splitting of variables page, and then we can decide how to organize them for better usability. agreed, just beware a lot of Sofia things are really core media things that are actually shared

Yes, it totally makes sense to concentrate everything that belongs to a module in one place - including mod_sofia.

One thing we started to do is for module specific vars, we are documenting those on the module page. an example is mod_conference. we should probably do this all the places where it makes sense and they are not applicable to multiple things

The choices for that children control are - creation time - modification time - alphabetic by title It would be nice if they could be ordered the same way the Confluence outline control can be. I suppose you could cheat and put an index number at the start of each page's title and it would end up sorting them the way you want. Bote

I figured out how to change the sorting manually: Tools-> View in hierarchy, and you can drag and drop the articles and change their ordering, You can also drop them in different places in the hierarchy. On Sun, Jun 14, 2015 at 6:03 PM, Bote Man <bote_radio@botecomm.com> wrote:

"View in Hierarchy" affects all Confluence pages shown in the outline control in the left pane. The Child Pages macro used on your Variables work-in-progress page is a different thing and has its own ordering choices. I hope to keep the Confluence pages ordered alphabetically within there categories unless it makes sense to put important pages near the top. I'm confused about which is which in your message. Bote

OK, then I assume that by leaving the "Sort child pages by" selection blank it displays the child pages in natural order. That's a pleasant surprise, as usually once a selection is made you are stuck with it. :-) Bote
