Thanks for the valuable information. G711 consumes about ~80 kbit/sec per channel / one way, you can easily measure this using vnstat -l. So in your case of 200 channels, you need 80*2*200 = 32 Mbit/sec and if you have 100 Mbit network without other major applications, then network should not be a constraint. But as was already mentioned many times, it depends of many factors, so difficult to say why the voice is garbled. Maybe someone with more expertise could advise. P.S. Just wondering if anybody on this list can tell the maximum number of channels which they managed to achieve on a single server, without compromising the quality? And what was the server's configuration and codecs used. Best luck. Vitalie On Dec 14, 2011, at 2:34 PM, Jeff Ullman wrote:
That's good questions Vitalie. I consider worst case scenario with G711 which really takes much more than advertised 64KB , in fact I feel goes beyond 100KB. I know it make no sense but sometime I don't' know if other (DB etc..) traffic is killer here. We might move to gig bandwidth environment soon so bandwidth shouldn't' be problem.
On my current server (Quad Core 2376 2.3GHz , 4GM RAM) , I start getting garbled voice ( all kind of delays ) on 200 channels usage and it's all pcmu.

Did you get a chance to measure the total bandwidth consumed when all 1000 channels are active?
Are there any minor or major voice quality problem?
Thanks Vitalie

I currently have production box that I tested for 1000 conferencing channels.
Specs are: CPU: AMD Phenom X6 Hexa Core Processor Speed: 6 Processor Cores, 2.8 GHz (Turbo 3.3 GHz) RAM: 8GB DDR3
Hope this gives you an idea big you need to go.
The More CPU & Bandwidth to the server the better! Thanks Craig Zimmerman
