It should work fine, heck it even works with loopback channels for me!
Just in case, verify that your dialstring is correct. If
"external-huawei_gw" is a gateway, use:
sofia/gateway/external-huawei_gw/XXXXXX
instead of:
sofia/external-huawei_gw/XXXXXX
