Hi john,
I dont think there is any deficiency in the asterisk.
One think which i want to add ,You will always may / may not have ready to
go software which will satisfy your need .
There are lots of opensource alternatives available for IP PBX but this does
not mean that asterisk has a deficiency . This is a way how softwares
evolved and grow.
You can take an example ,OS's for X86. There are lots of alternatives
avaliable this does not mean there are bugs or deficiencies which are
resolved from OS to OS.
For Intellectual Property, Asterisk is a GPL Software and Codecs like
G729/g729 are the Proprietary. So you need to pay the few $ for Codecs.
If you are planning to use asterisk, and after enhancing and adding features
planning to sell it as a Product then you will have to get in touch with the
creater of the asterisk for the License. There are the professional version
available for the product .
And For personal use not to worry about it . I will still suggest that
please go and take a look over GPL license.
And one thing I am not saying that any other software is not good. I am only
sharing my experience with it.
As it is being a Freeswitch I think I should not discuss about the Asterisk
Here. So if you need to discuss more about asterisk you can contact me using
my email.

Thanks
Mohan W
Embedded Architect
