You are correct,  You should be able to use:

http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Freeswitch_IVR_Originate#exec_in_answer_confirm

or

http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Channel_Variables#execute_on_answer

using playback.
