Attention all FreeSWITCH and Openzap committors. ACTION REQUIRED
We are in process of our migration from svn to git for our main source control. We will likely still have a read only svn mirror, but all future commits will go to git after the migration. In order to proceed with this process, I will need your full name, public key, email address, and svn username. If you have outstanding svn branches that you would like to keep, please contact me with these details as well, I do not currently plan on merging any branches from svn to the new git repo. For information on how to use git: http://git-scm.com/documentation , http://git-scm.com/course/svn.html For information on how to generate a public key if you do not already have one: http://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/~dhsu/ssh_public_key_howto.html For general users, more information will follow on these changes. For now, nothing has changed. Around April 1, there will likely be a 1 time need to do a full checkout if you plan on continuing to use the svn mirror, or a fresh git checkout if you plan on switching to git. If you have any other questions about the process or changes, feel free to ask. Mike

This will be transparent, with the possible exception of a one time need to do a single fresh checkout. I am working to see if we can maintain the svn repo as based on the current repo, but this may not be possible. On Mar 26, 2010, at 2:11 PM, Madovsky wrote:

Mike, could you please add a few more words of explanation for the uninitiated (like ME!) . . . . I don't contribute code (if only I could . . .), I'm on Windows, and only use Tortoise SVN to be able to build the current source.
From what you say below, it sounds like the SVN stuff will still be there, so maybe I don't need to change anything, but a few questions please . . .
Will the "SVN mirror" get updated as soon as the git code changes ? i.e., how current will it be ? Will SVN be around for a good while yet, or is it on its way out ? Do I need to think about changing things now ? What does git need for Windows users? I just had a quick look at your links and it looks like it needs Cygwin ? Does that mean that I would need to learn something new (Cygwin) to be able to migrate to git if required ? Or is everything seamless ? - OK, maybe not seamless, but relatively easy ? regards Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Jerris" <mike@jerris.com> To: <freeswitch-dev@lists.freeswitch.org>; "freeswitch-users" <freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org> Sent: Friday, March 26, 2010 5:59 PM Subject: [Freeswitch-users] Attention all FreeSWITCH and Openzap committors.ACTION REQUIRED

it will be updated immidiately, however in the future we are likely to make new branches for work on unstable new features and these features would require git to access until they are merged into the main tree. this will allow us to maintain our relative stability of our trunk while still allowing collaboritive work on new features.
Will SVN be around for a good while yet, or is it on its way out ? Do I need to think about changing things now ?
at this time we plan to maintain the mirror of the master branch (svn trunk) for quite some time or forever. branches and tags would only be maintained in git but would continue to be available as a tarball.
What does git need for Windows users? I just had a quick look at your links and it looks like it needs Cygwin ? Does that mean that I would need to learn something new (Cygwin) to be able to migrate to git if required ? Or is everything seamless ? - OK, maybe not seamless, but relatively easy ?
there is a git client that does not require cygwin called tortisegit, that is very much like the svn version. I have no intention of ever adding any dependency on cygwin.

Excellent. for those who are new to Git, there is a very informative and well written book available here and in hard copy from your favourite online book seller: http://progit.org/book/ I am sure the Git URL for the repository will be announced here when it is ready, at which point we can clone it and proceed from there.
