Detecting and blocking fax calls
We receive an inordinate amount of spam fax calls to FreeSwitch that we do not need to handle for any reason. I came across this method, https://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Misc._Dialplan_Tools_fax_detect, to hopefully detect and drop these calls. Is there any danger of this method mistaking any live calls and dropping those on accident or is there a better method to accomplish this? Thanks in advance.
You can use something like this: <action application="set" data="execute_on_answer=spandsp_start_fax_detect transfer 'fax XML default' 5"/> The chances are that some faxes won't get detected but I have never heard that regular phone calls would go to fax. More details are here: http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Mod_spandsp Regards, Ali Pey On Wed, Nov 27, 2013 at 2:16 PM, Everyday User <everydayuser11@gmail.com>wrote:

If you really are concerned, transfer to an ivr that says, if you are not a fax press 1, waits 10 sec then hangs up. Then the one time in a thousand when its a false detection, they can recover themselves. On Fri, Nov 29, 2013 at 9:41 PM, Ali Pey <alipey@gmail.com> wrote:

I have seen some FAX calls fail detection and go to voice mail - the audio appears low on these calls and I have improved it by turning up the gain by 3dB. I could be that there are FAX machines that don't provide the proper level? -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Karl Schmidt EMail Karl@xtronics.com Transtronics, Inc. Thanks for the response. I attempted to use spandsp_start_fax_detect, but am receiving an "Invalid Application spandsp_start_fax_detect" outputted in the log file. I see the module spandsp being loaded properly. Is there something else I need in order to use that command? Thanks. On Fri, Nov 29, 2013 at 7:41 PM, Ali Pey <alipey@gmail.com> wrote:

You can "reload mod_spandsp" and look for the app getting registered. Unless you have an ancient version, it should be there. On Mon, Dec 2, 2013 at 4:29 PM, Everyday User <everydayuser11@gmail.com>wrote:
