G.729 transcoder licensing
If we want to just have a play with G.729, can we buy just a couple of channels and then add to them later? And how does it cope with some channels? Presumably it stops offering G.729 when they're all in use? The other question is how does the G.729 licence bind itself to a system? Is this a hardware ID thing, or a Freeswitch ID? Does it work on VMs?

channels and then add to them later? Yes Presumably it stops offering G.729 when they're all in use? If the channel picks G729 then finds there's no license available when (if) it goes to transcode the call will fail and hang up. The other question is how does the G.729 licence bind itself to a system? Is this a hardware ID thing, or a Freeswitch ID? Does it work on VMs? It locks itself to the MAC addresses of the ethernet interfaces of your server. You buy a license then run a program to activate it on your server, that activation reads the MAC addresses and binds the license to them. That means you must run that activation on the server you plan to use it on. Internet access is required both to activate the license and when starting FS so it can verify the licenses. It should work in a VM, but there are other considerations to running FS within a VM. The CPU time becomes unreliable (host and other guests can unpredictable steal the CPU away) which means audio quality can suffer. -Steve On 12 June 2013 09:07, Alex Lake <alex@digitalmail.com> wrote:

If the channel picks G729 then finds there's no license available when (if) it goes to transcode the call will fail and hang up.
That's a shame. I wonder what ways around that might be. Presumably one can work out how many are in use, and if it's at or near the max, one could possibly dynamically change the config and reload the appropriate bit (presumably a reloadxml wouldn't be the right bit).
In some cases you might find these useful http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Mod_com_g729#API_Commands Also RE a VM note this on that page: "Using mod_com_g729 from within a VM is not supported, please use bare metal only" -Steve On 13 June 2013 11:27, Alex Lake <alex@digitalmail.com> wrote:

Brilliant. I can see that using VMs might be a way to circumvent the licensing restrictions, so that seems eminently reasonable. We use them for development purposes, so it doesn't matter that there's no support.

Why can't you detect that now? You should be able to detect that you are at or near the upper limit in the dialplan via API in a chan var and go from there... If you are constantly running out of licenses you probably don't have enough On 6/13/13 5:27 AM, "Alex Lake" <alex@digitalmail.com> wrote:

Although there is the case where FS picks the G729 codec for the incoming call leg before it reaches dialplan that can cause an issue... Also there would be a race condition between checking if a license is available and actually using it. -Steve On 13 June 2013 14:46, Ken Rice <krice@freeswitch.org> wrote:

You can still use late negotiation... And there could be a race condition sure, but I would suspect unless you are on a very high volume system, you wouldn¹t run into that race condition that often, and I would argue that if you are on a high volume system, and you are still running out of G729 licenses, you can probably make room in the budget for another 25 to 50 G729 licenses On 6/13/13 8:57 AM, "Steven Ayre" <steveayre@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, I will be able to now. ;-) It just seems that it might be more sensible, when out of licenses, to at least offer the prospect of a call using an alternative codec. Sometimes it's hard to predict how many licenses are required.

If you are running a high traffic system, be careful and check CPU utilization, as another 50 transcoding sessions might put you into dangerous territory. Digium or Sangoma are you friends in that case. Their boards take a lot of load off a high traffic system. What I don't know is if both technologies can coexist in one system (120 transcoding sessions from a Digium board + XX soft licenses) how would it decide which to use first? AFAIK you can only load one module providing G729 at a time (mod_g729 / mod_com_g729 / mod_sangoma_codec*). * although you could load this at the same time as one of the others if you disable its G729 support to use it for other codecs -Steve On 13 June 2013 23:24, Guillermo Ruiz Camauer <grcamauer@gmail.com> wrote:
