LOL - What language should I use?
All joking aside, it's clear that the author in the FreeSWITCH docs prefers Lua. It sounds like, hands down, Lua is the answer based on information found here: http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Which_scripting_language_should_I_use%3F But why isn't Java in the list? Is Lua the fastest scripting language when only compared to Perl, Python, and JavaScript? What types of results have folks compiled from tests with mod_java? I ask because this seems to be a bit of a hole in the docs. Java is by far one of the most widely used languages (although I personally prefer something other than Java) so it seems that this should be covered too. Hope this helps and thank you! James
They basically all work the same since the same C++ code is used to generate the bindings with SWIG. Lua is just the most well-documented but with a little syntax transposing, the docs apply to many of the other languages. It's also worth mentioning that if you connect it with mod_xml_curl then you can use whatever language you like, although it can be significantly more confusing depending on what it is you're trying to do. Cal On Sat, Nov 23, 2013 at 3:46 AM, Anthony Minessale <anthony.minessale@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks for the replies everybody. I did try mod_xml_curl initially but needed to do some custom scripting so ended up trying mod_java, mod_lua, and mod_spidermonkey directly. Not sure which we're going to go with yet, but based on what Anthony is saying, it doesn't matter. lua is preferred for embed-ability, due to it's size. Any language can interact over ESL, xml_curl, or a custom mod. -Avi
