Thomson ST2030 IP Phones
Hi, is anyone using Thomson ST2030 phones with FreeSwitch ? I have a mixture of Cisco 7940 and the ST2030s. The voice quality of the Cisco phones seems fine, but the Thomson phones are pretty poor. I get quite a bit of noise (hiss) on the line and some breakup of the voice. The phones are all on a private LAN behind a router - all external calls are over the PSTN - no external IP calls are made (I don't use a VOIP provider). I have loaded the latest Thomson SIP firmware (2.69). There are a couple of options on the phone that I've tried such as Silence Suppression, Acoustic Echo Cancellation and Packet Loss Compensation with no improvement. Most of the other options are beyond me I'm afraid, so I'd be really interested to hear from anyone who has good (or even acceptable !) results from the ST2030 - particularly if they could share their phone configuration regards Dave
We have one ST2030 and one other model of them which we bought for evaluation. We have the same problem as you describe, both with Freeswitch and Asterisk. That's why we have only one unit and not more... from my experience, you get what you pay for. __Yehavi: 2010/3/25 Dave Stevenson <stevendt@primrosebank.net>

Yehavi, thanks a lot for the reply - not the answer that I wanted, but it does confirm my findings and tell me that there's no point in spending more time & effort on these phones. Before I went for the ST2030, I checked out the FreeSWITCH Interop Wiki and saw that the ST2030 was reported as working with FreeSWITCH, unfortunately, the Wiki does not give any information on how good (or bad) the phones actually are. I also did some "Googling" and the phone appeared to get good reports (from Asterisk users), so I thought I was on safe ground. Obviously not though. Oh well, I'll keep trying to find a decent VOIP phone with full SpeakerPhone functionality that does not have the footprint of the Cisco 794x. regards Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: Yehavi Bourvine To: freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org Sent: Friday, March 26, 2010 4:59 AM Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] Thomson ST2030 IP Phones We have one ST2030 and one other model of them which we bought for evaluation. There is one thing which might help you, but since I am at home I don't remember the exact details. There is some codec parameter which should be set (on the phone) to 20mSec instead of 30mSec. I don't remember which one, but look on LinkSys documents on Freeswitch wiki - it has the same problem. Regards, __Yehavi: 2010/3/26 Dave Stevenson <stevendt@primrosebank.net>

Thanks Yehavi, I did need to change the codec "packetization" parameters (there's one for each codec) from the defaults to 20ms which helped one problem but did not cure the rest of the quality issues regards Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: Yehavi Bourvine To: freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org Sent: Friday, March 26, 2010 4:04 PM Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] Thomson ST2030 IP Phones There is one thing which might help you, but since I am at home I don't remember the exact details. Dave, We have quite a few ST2030 deployed, but they run MGCP and they are connected on a commercial IP-Centrex platform. I am not going to say that's the best phone in the world, but we never had the issues you're describing (and the SIP firmware is considered more advanced than the MGCP one). And we are using G729. So either the G711 code in the phone is crap (I have to admit I never used it), or something is wrong somewhere. I would recommend you disable silence suppression (that's crap anyway), and then take a RTP capture of the call, before and after FS. Then decode the RTP streams with wireshark, and listen to it. The point is to check if the issue is in the RTP stream sent by the phone, or if it appears after FS (unlikely), or if it is because of the way the other phone decodes it. Are you having the issue from Thomson to Thomson ? What about if you enable bypass_media ? David, thanks for the info - maybe I'm giving up too soon ! I've not used WireShark before - I downloaded a copy a while ago, but it looked a bit beyond me, it sounds like this might be the driver for me to try to get to grips with it though. As you suggest, On or Off - the Silence Suppression did not actually seem to do anything noticeable but it is currently off. There does not seem to be much, if any, difference when calling Thomson-Thomson or Thomson-Cisco, but there does seem to be a marked difference between those combinations and when talking Cisco-Cisco. I have not tried "bypass-media" - off to read up about it now, regards Dave ----- Original Message ----- From: David Ponzone To: freeswitch-users@lists.freeswitch.org Sent: Friday, March 26, 2010 4:08 PM Subject: Re: [Freeswitch-users] Thomson ST2030 IP Phones Dave, We have quite a few ST2030 deployed, but they run MGCP and they are connected on a commercial IP-Centrex platform.
