Can we have a forum

I like forums better than e-mail. It's more userfriendly. (to me, (IMHO)) Google groups is a good way to go. :-) Henk
Oh btw I have talked about using google groups which offers both in one package.... What does everyone thing about some sort of compromise like that? /b On Aug 10, 2008, at 3:43 PM, Lee JJ wrote:

I prefer email, except I like to sometimes be able to search Forums. I think your proposal is a good compromise. Agree. But I have iptables set with the ports as described in the wiki http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Getting_Started_Guide and it doesn't work. If I set DMZ to open it works, so I am wondering if there are any other ports that I have to open in the firewall. Duan.

Sitting a machine on a public IP is just asking for trouble since there are people out there who look for boxes which they can try to hack into. Securing the box just makes them want to try harder. You can secure a box on a public IP very easily. The reason nat is hell is SIP. His scenario would be simpler without NAT involved. I have personally been pushing ipv6 which if you have that setup internal-ipv6 profile comes up and just works along side the ipv4 profile. The bottom line is if you want a secure machine.. unplug it.. pack it up into a box and put it in the closet. /b On Aug 25, 2008, at 3:16 PM, Ken Livingston wrote:

All right, forwarding the UDP range 16384-32768 and openning these ports on IPTables did the trick. It is now working. Does anybody know how can I narrow this range ? Even if I stop iptables it does not work. SELinux is disabled. It works only with DMZ set to the IP box. Duan

The only worry about forums is that it splits support resources between the two. Any thoughts?
Yeah, I have a thought. Would anyone who thinks forums are a good idea care to name one that actually works, isn't a war zone, and yet functions without truly massive full time moderation? Steve
Why? Do you actually think that a FreeSWITCH forum would become a warzone? Isn't the userbase a bit too grown up for that? Google groups sounds like an excellent compromise. Theres a google group for google groups: http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Groups-Guide And here is a guy that wrote an own importer: http://groups.google.com/group/pyrodesktop/browse_thread/thread/3536c6d41609... maybe you could "borrow" it? Personally, I also prefer some sort of bulletin board / message board based discussion. Google Groups is a great idea. To me, a straight up mailman mailing list just seems old school. I agree with Darren in that something more easily searchable would be a big plus.

I am coming in a little late on this conversation but you can have both with keeping the existing mailman system. I added freeswitch-users to Nabble groups back in March. The same thing can be done to freeswitch-dev and we might be able to import the even older freeswitch-users data. For those not familiar Nabble ( http://www.nabble.com ) allows anyone to create a web forum based on an existing mailing list. After you signup you can input your existing mailing list auth info and when you post to the freeswitch-users forum it sends it to the mailing list and keeps track of the posting status. Here is a link to the freeswitch list: http://www.nabble.com/Freeswitch-users-f32209.html This is a works for me solution that might appease everyone. Well if you're reading this, this solution does appear to work. And is a win-win. I would recommend it. The interface on the web side is certainly friendly and easy-to-use. and then bkw doesn't have to actually do any work. Two thumbs up from me - Darren bsnipes wrote:

They've started up Nabble 2 which apparently has newer interfaces available including phpbb. If you create an account you can add the freeswitch-users and freeswitch-dev to it and it should ask you to upload the archives. I can add freeswitch-users and tell them to transfer what is on Nabble v1 to it but since you have archives prior to March it would be better for you to do it. Brian S/bsnipes Brian West-3 wrote:
