Hi all, I am currently evaluating either using Freeswitch or Openser for my SIP server. I am trying to look for information that can tell me the difference between the two in terms of ease-of-maintain, ease-of-implement, and scalability. If you have such kind of information, would you please share with me? Thank you very much for your input. Best Regards, Pete

I am trying to look for information that can tell me the difference between the two in terms of ease-of-maintain, ease-of-implement, and scalability. If you have such kind of information, would you please share with me? Apples and Oranges. OpenSER is more of a proxy/router and FreeSWITCH is... well.... a switch. OpenSER is definitely better at dealing with broken devices (i.e. most linksys phones/ATAs on the market) behind nat. You might consider using OpenSER as a registrar/proxy and using FreeSWITCH to do the call accounting and routing to/from carriers.
If you must use only one or the other... Look at who you will be primarily interfacing with. (i.e. end users behind nat or carriers and wholesalers) Concerning configs, FreeSWITCH uses XML configs while OpenSER uses a very C-like scripting language. I guess which is easier depends on your background. Both FreeSWITCH and OpenSER are extremely scalable, but IMHO should be used for totally different reasons. -Ray

Hi, The application is a IP-PBX with incoming calls through T1 and VOIP carriers. Asterisk will be used for Voicemail and IVR. I have written some AGI script to route calls based on user preference which is stored in the database. Users may connect through softphone or call in through PSTN. For example, a call comes in and depends on time/callerid/date, Asterisk will determine whether the call should be forwarded out, going to voicemail, etc. For the purpose of SIP registering, I am thinking about using Openser/Freeswitch, whichever is more appropriate. If Freeswitch is more like a switch, should I be using it to replace Openser or part of the routing that is done by Asterisk? Thanks alot for your inputs. Well this is just me opining here, but if I were to rate each platform heres how I would rate them FreeSwitch ease-of-maintain: Excellent ease-of-implement: Excellent scalability: Very Good (Open)Ser ease-of-maintain:good ease-of-implement:Need a PHD in OpenSer Scripting scalability: Excellent FreeSwitch is easy to maintain and configure/implement the configurations are straight forward, there are tons of examples on how to set up call routing and technology connections (ie: SIP, Jingle, whatever), and in Performance has already proven it can handle very high call setups/sec (> 500) and a very high concurrent call count (in no-media mode as a B2BUA > 2500 concurrent call legs) I use it in a Outbound Call center environment and would have to guess that the number of concurrent calls would shoot up if we not beating it todeath on with that type of traffic. OpenSER is extremely Scaleable... And can litterally handled 1000s of call setups per second, but major drawback is the configurations... There is a very high learning curve and it forces to you learn how SIP works you must script out each step of the way... There are tools to help with this but they only get you close, you still have to tweak them out for most installions... Both platforms offer different methods for accessing a DataBase backend for dynamic/realtime configuration updates, CDR collection etc...
