RPMs and Yum repo for EL5 and EL6 based system in beta
Hey guys, Check it out... Yum is on the way for new freeswitch goodness. With root perms (that means logged in as root, su or maybe even sudo) rpm -Uvh http://files.freeswitch.org/yum/freeswitch-release-1-0.noarch.rpm This will install the FreeSwitch YUM repo on your RHEL5 or 6 based box (that includes Centos or Scientific Linux 5 and 6 platforms) Then to install FreeSWITCH with the same configs you get from making samples yum install freeswitch-config-vanilla This will install freeswitch to /usr/local/freeswitch as you are use to doing at this time. RPMs are being rolled every couple of days right now, but will soon be rolled nightly... Find me on #freeswitch on irc.freenode.net as SwK if you have any questions or issues, if you find any bugs please open a Jira and assign it to me. These RPMs are Alpha/Beta quality please test them before using them in a production environment... Additional Packages will be available shortly. Ken aka SwK
This is really cool! We have people all over the place begging for RPMs and such. Is this mentioned anywhere on the wiki yet? Only reason I ask is that the most likely candidate to use this would probably be looking on the wiki first... Also, do you have any flavors other than vanilla? :D -MC On Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 9:05 AM, Ken Rice <krice@freeswitch.org> wrote:

Update for you
http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Download_%26_Installation_Guide#YUM_Based_In...
Feel free to refine it Superb! Thank you!
There were 2 .spec files I found in the main FS git tree, which I started using as a basis to prepare/configure/build my own flavour of FS (I use Fedora Core on all our machines). As I would almost definitely cross-compile FS, I would most definitely amend/change the existing .spec file, so I will probably modify it to account for cross-compilation "peculiarities", so I'll post my findings/bugs - through JIRA, of course. ;-)
Josh, the spec file you see in the main git is not up todate yet... I'm working in a side tree for the time being... These patches are getting ready to push tho See http://github.com/swk/fs_test The .spec file you'll find there is VERY different then in the primary git tree On 2/13/12 5:08 PM, "Josh" <mojo1736@privatedemail.net> wrote:

Wow! It is indeed! Should I wait until you do what needs doing - what would you advice? I also need to find out how the various modules are included/compiled etc (see my other response re: modules.conf) so that I could device the appropriate options in the .spec file. Ideally, I'd like to know the full list of all possible modules to be included so that I could get the ones, which are not part of the core set configured with possible inclusion/to be enabled in that .spec file.
I'm completely regenerating the modules.conf in the spec file to compile as much as possible... There are only a few modules I'm not compiling at this point due to build dependancy issues I havent quite worked out... See my other reply... you don't have to customize the spec file at all... all the modules except for the core modules are broken out into their own RPMs... this way all you have to do is create your own config RPM depending on the modules that you need... this way you you only install what you need... example of this is already there with the freeswitch-config-vanilla RPM... yeah its pretty complete... still needs some testing... and I still want to make a couple more adjustments to it for FHS compliancy.. end goal is to use this to get us into EPEL and eventually in to EL7 when it rolls out! if you want to look at WIP see my working branch on github at http://github.com/swk/fs_test/ also you can grab use the yum repo we have setup already K On Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 6:04 PM, Josh <mojo1736@privatedemail.net> wrote:

yeah its pretty complete... still needs some testing... and I still want to make a couple more adjustments to it for FHS compliancy.. end goal is to use this to get us into EPEL and eventually in to EL7 when it rolls out! Excellent! As my distro is Fedora Core, I would certainly make a few tweaks to the .spec file to adapt it. I will also cross-compile the whole thing, so I am bound to hit a few issues, but if this file is near-enough complete, then that's good enough for me. I've just finished a long-overdue upgrade of my build environment (have been postponing it for over a month) and I am ready to roll...
if you want to look at WIP see my working branch on github at http://github.com/swk/fs_test/ Thanks for that - I already have it (you've last updated it 2 days ago according to the git logs). One of the tweaks I'll do is make the build a bit more modular. For example, I do not need ODBC/PostgreSQL, so the ODBC/PostgreSQL-related BuildRequires are not needed, so I'll probably encapsulate the whole package with %define, %if...%endif block. I'll also add a separate %define for the FS user and group names (so that they are configurable - just as a security precaution).
I also notice you are not building h323 due to dependency issues. What kind of issues? Also, I take it Source0 is the compressed archive of the current git, is that so? If that is not the case, are the files listed as Source1...Source13 necessary if I download directly from git and then compress that into an archive? It is important for me to know, because my intention is to check out the latest git, compress it and use that as the main source for the build, therefore need to know whether the additional sources (Source1...Source13) are in fact part of the main git tree.
Source0 is a tarball generated from either scripts/tagscript.sh or scripts/dailys.sh both of these roll the tar ball the other Source# are tar balls we require to build and are not in the git tree As far as the BuildRequires those are there because they are required to build all the modules the whole point of rolling modular RPMs like this is so that we can build everything at one time and you can roll your own config package (see package config-vanilla) and thats all you need to build everything else is done for you Changing UserNames doesn't add any security really... you should be running freeswitch as a non-root user and then it should be a locked account possibly with /bin/nologin or /bin/false as the shell unless you have other reasons that make the last thing not needed... Changing the usernames increases support problems (as does doing stupid stuff like changing the UserAgent string) this is NOT securing the system as its just Security By Obscurity and we have been taught many times over the years that security by obscurity does not work. Source0 is a tarball generated from either scripts/tagscript.sh or scripts/dailys.sh both of these roll the tar ball
the other Source# are tar balls we require to build and are not in the git tree Interestingly enough, I used a similar script to fetch the current tree, compress it and then use it as a source (git-<current_date>.tar.bz2). So, in addition to the daily compressed git, I would also need the other sources listed in that .spec file, right?
As far as the BuildRequires those are there because they are required to build all the modules the whole point of rolling modular RPMs like this is so that we can build everything at one time and you can roll your own config package (see package config-vanilla) and thats all you need to build everything else is done for you Yes, I understand that, but I am never going to use FS with PostgreSQL for example, so why would I need to pollute my build machine by installing the PostgreSQL -devel packages?
That is what I mean by making the .spec file more modular - for people like myself, if I don't want to include any ODBC/PosgreSQL stuff and rely solely on sqlite[3] then all I would need to do is set the appropriate variable in that .spec file (or reset it via the command line) and that is it.
Changing UserNames doesn't add any security really... you should be running freeswitch as a non-root user and then it should be a locked account possibly with /bin/nologin or /bin/false as the shell unless you have other reasons that make the last thing not needed... I know all that, but it is a practice I use to define my own user names for the daemons I compile/deploy/run on all systems - don't worry, I won't bother you with unnecessary questions arising from the use of non-standard user name. I also deploy SELinux, so I need to tie this user name with the FS SELinux policy (which I will also create/amend and deploy), so it is important for me to easily change that name.
What are the issues with h323 I am reading in that .spec file - could you elaborate further?

Actually Naseer, I would personally like to see GUI and add on developers contribute RPMs for their projects that depend on our official FreeSWITCH RPMs. This includes things like vBilling, FusionPBX, Blue.Box, Newfies Dialer, etc etc... Remember OSTAG is out there to support us OpenSource Telephone people... I would love to see them get involved with this someway to support this stuff K On 2/13/12 2:36 PM, "Muhammad Naseer Bhatti" <nbhatti@gmail.com> wrote:

Good idea. This can be maintained on a wiki for each project? or something setup with the project site itself? For vBilling, we are already working on setting up a distro based version for CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, *BSD and Windows as well :) -Naseer On Mon, Feb 13, 2012 at 11:41 PM, Ken Rice <krice@freeswitch.org> wrote:

Hey guys,
Check it out... Yum is on the way for new freeswitch goodness.
With root perms (that means logged in as root, su or maybe even sudo) rpm -Uvh http://files.freeswitch.org/yum/freeswitch-release-1-0.noarch.rpm
This will install the FreeSwitch YUM repo on your RHEL5 or 6 based box (that includes Centos or Scientific Linux 5 and 6 platforms)
Then to install FreeSWITCH with the same configs you get from making samples
yum install freeswitch-config-vanilla
This will install freeswitch to /usr/local/freeswitch as you are use to doing at this time.

Yes, there is soon to be a decent repo for the debian based distros. Resolving a few automation issues at the moment though. Right now the repo will be intended to support both source packages and binaries for: Debian: Stable- i386, amd64 Testing - i386, amd64 Ubuntu: 12.04- i386, amd64 10.04- i386, amd64 William King Senior Engineer Quentus Technologies, INC 1037 NE 65th St Suite 273 Seattle, WA 98115 Main: (877) 211-9337 Office: (206) 388-4772 Cell: (253) 686-5518 william.king@quentustech.com On 04/19/2012 01:44 PM, Ken Rice wrote:
