FreeSWITCH, OSX, Libtool, Macports
I recently started investigating FS and am curious about what the specific problem is with Macports and FS. I've been using Macports for a couple years and find it to be a great, actively maintained package manager that uses /opt/local, making it a very reliable way to keep production software working through Apple system updates. I've found the Macports team to be very responsive so if there are specific things that I can pass along, it might get fixed. Is there a link or thread that documents what's incompatible with FS? Thanks, -Terry

There is no incompatibility per se - I use Macports and have installed FreeSwitch, although the only thing that FS actually uses from MP is libjpeg as it bundles everything else. That said, I had trouble getting the bundled PortAudio working so I mangled the mod_portaudio Makefile.am to use the MP PortAudio and it worked fine. -- Daniel O'Connor software and network engineer for Genesis Software - http://www.gsoft.com.au "The nice thing about standards is that there are so many of them to choose from." -- Andrew Tanenbaum GPG Fingerprint - 5596 B766 97C0 0E94 4347 295E E593 DC20 7B3F CE8C

That's really encouraging. Based on the threads I was reading it looked like people and the devs were saying that FS isn't happy with macports installed. I think this is because you have spandsp installed in MacPorts and those includes are being used in preference to the ones in libs/spandsp/.. I think to work around this I just removed spandsp while I built freeswitch (bleh). IMO the "right" solution is to rename spandsp in freeswitch - it has been modified (looking at the git log) so it is really a fork of the original. That is unless those patches get merged back into spandsp and then macports can get an updated one. The later solution is still pretty bad though unless there is a way to force freeswitch to not look at the bundled version. There is a similar problem with portaudio although since it has a stable API it doesn't show up. It doesn't however build on OSX (Intel 10.7 anyway) and in the end I hacked src/mod/endpoint/mod_portaudio to use pkg-config to find the right CFLAGS and LIBS to link to it.

THanks Daniel. Awhile back I was fooling around with the asterisk macport on this work iMac and spandsp-devel is a dependency. I uninstalled the asterisk port long ago but spandsp-devel was still around. I am running Lion which uses clang and I think that in this case spandsp doesn't use any asm which is why it probably works.
I don't know why the asm wouldn't work in your case though.
You can probably work around it by applying this patch.. --- a/libs/spandsp/src/gsm0610_rpe.c +++ b/libs/spandsp/src/gsm0610_rpe.c @@ -59,7 +59,7 @@ static void weighting_filter(int16_t x[40], const int16_t *e) // signal [-5..0.39.44] IN) { -#if defined(__GNUC__) && defined(SPANDSP_USE_MMX) && defined(__x86_64__) +#if 0 && defined(__GNUC__) && defined(SPANDSP_USE_MMX) && defined(__x86_64__) /* Table 4.4 Coefficients of the weighting filter */ /* This must be padded to a multiple of 4 for MMX to work */ static const union @@ -114,7 +114,7 @@ static void weighting_filter(int16_t x[40], : "c" (e), "D" (x), [gsm_H] "X" (gsm_H) : "rax", "rdx", "rsi", "memory" ); -#elif defined(__GNUC__) && defined(SPANDSP_USE_MMX) && defined(__i386__) +#elif 0 && defined(__GNUC__) && defined(SPANDSP_USE_MMX) && defined(__i386__) /* Table 4.4 Coefficients of the weighting filter */ /* This must be padded to a multiple of 4 for MMX to work */ static const union
ie disable the asm version and use the C one.
So I tried installing on another Mac, an intel xeon MacPro running 10.6.8 and ran into the problem listed on jira <http://jira.freeswitch.org/browse/FS-3992> where ppc code is getting called instead of x86. I did a fresh git clone, applied your above patch and the jira configure.in.diff patch, used your env configure and it compiled and installed! I'll test it out tomorrow. Thanks for you help. -Terry

Strangely I didn't hit the spidermonkey problem when I compiled (and it did build and run I just checked). I'm glad it helped, although I am surprised you only needed to modify that one file..
Hi Terry, I was having a hissy fit with a short while ago. It was about libtool being a coit (au slang) http://freeswitch-users.2379917.n2.nabble.com/FreeSWITCH-OSX-Libtool-Macport... Excuse the exhaustive gibber, the error messages will mean the most to anyone! HTH, Chris On 19/06/2012, at 5:50 AM, Terry Barnum wrote:
I recently started investigating FS and am curious about what the specific problem is with Macports and FS. I've been using Macports for a couple years and find it to be a great, actively maintained package manager that uses /opt/local, making it a very reliable way to keep production software working through Apple system updates. I've found the Macports team to be very responsive so if there are specific things that I can pass along, it might get fixed. Is there a link or thread that documents what's incompatible with FS?
Thanks, -Terry

Hi Chris, I saw your thread in the list archives and used the subject line for my email hoping that it would continue the discussion. In that thread it sounds like you had to remove macports to get FS to install. Am I misreading that? Thanks, -Terry

I can't believe you just used it like that! How dare you :P OTOH, good thinking. I nearly didn't read your email but Daniel's response caught my eye. I remember being able to do that and that's what got me started (I needed to get FS running fast) - and that's macports got the boot unforch. If you've got good karma with the macports crew then i can certainly muck things up on my laptop again, i know how to do a 180 to get out of it now :) It will have to wait until July though. Cheers Chris
