I have recently become aware of Freeswitch and I see much potential. Obviously there are huge gaps in the documentation. There are a few example setups and they are great but they suggest we are seeing only the tip of the iceberg. I believe what is needed is a list of all applications and channel variables, their purpose and the module which must be loaded to implement them if not in the core. Then the new user can begin to customize the examples. If this information already exists, kindly point me in the right direction. Thank you
Channel Variables are located here http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Channel_Variables I not sure its 100% coverage yet but close. The list of modules are loacted here http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/Modules I know there are some gaps in this but its starting to fill in. Indeed. The FS devs are so talented that they can write apps and features faster than anyone can document them! We are working as best we can on the documentation. We have some intrepid volunteers giving of their free time and they are doing their level best.
I believe what is needed is a list of all applications and channel variables, their purpose and the module which must be loaded to implement them if
not
in the core. Then the new user can begin to customize the examples.
Your input matters a great deal. Those new to FS have a viewpoint that most of us cannot empathize with, especially those who have at least some technical background. I believe Wasim and Brian have responded to some of your suggestions already. We are working on the apps and apis list as well as the channel variables list. I'd say we are at least a few weeks away from anything substantial here so please check back!

And thank you! We appreciate it when people make suggestions about documentation. Everyone wants the program to do something but precious few people offer feedback on getting the system documented. Please continue offering suggestions. -MC

I speak as someone new to telephony applications, being asked to investigate them for our business model. As I (we) are researching software switches and IVRs we naturally installed Asterisk but found a problem. While searching for answers we found a list of soft switches on voip-info which led here. However, the learning curve is substantial to someone outside of telephony. May I suggest that someone provides a simple to understand page listing call flow from a PSTN and out to a PSTN, for example? Simply working out what functionality exists and how it is intended to be used would make an excellent starting point. Simple things like explaining the difference between users and extensions. Agreed much of this is not your responsibility. However for take-up to be effective by a wide audience such guidance would be a serious boost. R.
Hi, I almost visit the docu wiki of FS daily to see if some documentation has been changed/added or altered. So, i have to literally go through all the sections and sub-sections of the wiki to find material of interest which might have changed in last 24 hours. I wondered if the home page of the wiki has a seciton like "NEWS" which can contain chronological changes in the docu wiki made by users/maintainers. That will enable us to find changes at one go. I will do my bit of study on mediawiki if this is possible and lchk if this is possible. Thanks to the FS team for the "telephony of the century" :) Cheers! -Ashutosh On Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 10:10 AM, Robert Smith < robert.m.t.smith@googlemail.com> wrote:

Robert, Your input is appreciated. At this point I don't have anything to offer as far as the getting started in telephony. One thing I can do is recommend the chapter 7 of the Asterisk book: Asterisk - The Future of Telephony. I had the privilege of speaking with one of the authors just a few minutes ago here at Cluecon. (Jim Van Meggelen.) He's an old PBX guy so he knows PSTN very well. You can download the PDF of the newest edition of the "TFOT" book here: http://asteriskdocs.org/ I can also recommend chapter 2 - Preparing a system for Asterisk and chapter 8 - Protocols for VoIP. They contain lots of information that is general in nature and not Asterisk-specifc. Chapter 2 talks a lot about the computer itself and the environment, PCI slot types, etc. Chapter 8 discusses SIP, SDP, IAX2, etc. and is a good place to get some information on VoIP in general. I the meantime I will start gathering ideas on adding to our "other resources" page on the wiki. I'm sure that we will start seeing a lot more non-telecom-experienced visitors to freeswitch.org and we absolutely don't want to alienate them. Even if we don't have all the answers (I'm sure we don't) we still want to help people find the answers and that definitely includes pointing to other resources. To the community in general: If you have books/links/resources that help(ed) you with telecom/datacom then please post them here in this thread. From there we can organize a page or pages on the wiki that will index the relevant topics. As usual, ideas are welcomed from the community. -MC

Yes I managed to pick this up shortly after installing asterisk. Another volume for the to-do list...

Your enthusiasm is certainly appreciated but remember that gathering links and texts is only half the story - structure and navigation will be key. I actually think the maintainer(s) of voip-info.org should be involved here too. People searching Google et al will click onto that site and from there will at this point in time often only see references to the asterisk way. Naturally that site will contain information about the market leader but some abstraction of technology versus implementation would be nice... R

I think that creating the freeswitch doku is quite a big job by itself. I have started redoing parts of it while translating it to some other languages as well. You could probably add 100 chapters about all protocols, all voice technologies, x86 vs SPARC vs powerpc and whatever else you want, but tha n it will become a giant to get lost in. THere are other places youc an just link to to get those kind of informations. Just my 2c EUR
