Getting to the bottom of a problem
My freeswitch installation (running under Ubuntu 12.04) has a habit of mysteriously stopping. It's not doing this in a predictable manner (eg. it's not when any particular bit of dialplan is being executed). I have a script that runs every minute to see if it's running, and if it isn't, starts it up (and sends me a notification). I'd like to be able to get to the bottom of this, but am not particularly (or at all!) experienced in running gdb. If I follow the brief instructions in the Wiki to run "gdb bin/freeswitch" I don't seem to get a working freeswitch running at all. What should I see on the command line when I issue that command? This what I currently see: ----- root@hzhmay14a /home/oev/fs-pabx/scripts # gdb --args /usr/local/freeswitch/bin/freeswitch -nonat GNU gdb (Ubuntu/Linaro 7.4-2012.04-0ubuntu2.1) 7.4-2012.04 Copyright (C) 2012 Free Software Foundation, Inc. License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html> This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it. There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. Type "show copying" and "show warranty" for details. This GDB was configured as "x86_64-linux-gnu". For bug reporting instructions, please see: <http://bugs.launchpad.net/gdb-linaro/>... Reading symbols from /usr/local/freeswitch/bin/freeswitch...done. (gdb) (gdb) ----- There's a mysterious (to me) command line parameter "-core" that I was wondering if it might be useful in my circumstances. I'm also prepared to do a new build (with some kind of diagnostic params) if that helps. Any tips or suggestions of things to read up on most welcome....
Alex, what FS version are you using? I had same behaviour on my past Ubuntu installation and I found that I was using the latest GIT 1.5, not the stable release 1.4 Cheers Max Il giorno 04/set/2014, alle ore 16:32, Alex Lake ha scritto:

Just my 2 cents, when i had an issue like this on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, it turned out to be a kernel issue, after updating my kernel the problem "magically" disappeared. On Thu, Sep 4, 2014 at 8:55 AM, Massimo Varriale <mvar78@gmail.com> wrote:

Lo and behold.... I guess they do still support it until 2017. The problem is, in any case, its too out of date for us to support. Debian 6 and ubuntu 12.04 are both running much older versions of packages that are incompatible with what the latest FS needs. Its possible to manually install some of these updates but then it breaks the administration packaging so you could make your own packages to update it but its also a large hassle for the end user. Even when some users managed to get it to build on 12.04 there were bugs in things like openssl that caused crashes etc that were all solved by updating the OS. Besides, its using a much older kernel that is not able to fully take advantage of the more modern intel CPU and suffers from several issues regarding powersaving / sleep and system hanging. I guess bottom line is, if you want legacy OS, use legacy FS from that same time period. 1.2 probably still runs on 12.04 but you are not completely safe from the power saving and CPU issues. We don't say you can't use it just that we cannot support it.

Thanks for that suggestion, but I really hate upgrading for upgrading's sake - especially to a new major version with certain incompatibilities. We've had previous installations that have worked fine, and I suspect that a *downgrade* is preferable for me... Mind you, now that the old installation method doesn't work any more, I may be forced to change our code base where needed for 1.4. Is there a way to install 1.2 available? I don't need "support" as such on this, just access to the same old source. Cheers, Alex
We don't support ubuntu 12.04 (neither does ubuntu themselves) Use latest master or 1.4 on 14.04 for best results.

My kernel is 3.11.0-19-generic
So what version of the kernel fixed it for you?
Just my 2 cents, when i had an issue like this on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, it turned out to be a kernel issue, after updating my kernel the problem "magically" disappeared.

Hi Massimo, FreeSWITCH Version 1.2.24+git~20140603T002624Z~7b74ee3955~64bit (git 7b74ee3 2014-06-03 00:26:24Z 64bit) I suppose I should be using the latest 1.2 stable release ;-) Rgds, Alex
Alex, what FS version are you using?
I had same behaviour on my past Ubuntu installation and I found that I was using the latest GIT 1.5, not the stable release 1.4
Cheers Max

This what I currently see:
----- root@hzhmay14a /home/oev/fs-pabx/scripts # gdb --args /usr/local/freeswitch/bin/freeswitch -nonat GNU gdb (Ubuntu/Linaro 7.4-2012.04-0ubuntu2.1) 7.4-2012.04 Copyright (C) 2012 Free Software Foundation, Inc. Reading symbols from /usr/local/freeswitch/bin/freeswitch...done. (gdb) (gdb) -----
There's a mysterious (to me) command line parameter "-core" that I was wondering if it might be useful in my circumstances.
I'm also prepared to do a new build (with some kind of diagnostic params) if that helps.
Any tips or suggestions of things to read up on most welcome....

Check dmesg - does it show that freeswitch crashed? You'll see a line about segmentation fault, general protection error, or similar. If so, do you have a coredump? If you're using the Debian packages (and perhaps if otherwise) it'll likely be /var/lib/freeswitch/core If so see 'Creating A Backtrace With gdb (Linux/Unix)' on https://confluence.freeswitch.org/display/FREESWITCH/Reporting+Bugs and file a Jira On 4 September 2014 15:32, Alex Lake <alex@digitalmail.com> wrote:

dmesg has nothing of interest. No coredump (and I'd be surprised if there were one). For the record, I build it from source (in theory, 1.2 "stable"), rather than using packages. Thanks
