Speccing server for enterprise FS
Looking to setup a new Freeswitch server that will be doing quite a lot of traffic. Trying to get a rough idea of where to spend the money (RAM? CPU? Network access?). There will be perhaps 10,000 simultaneous SIP registrations Maybe 500 simultaneous calls, some of (say 50%) which will require a-law to GSM transcoding. I know it's a tricky one to answer, but based on experiences here, which bits tend to glow first?
Hey, Although I can't share specs for a machine doing that kind of traffic, I would like to suggest that you should be doing HA and load balancing between atleast two servers when dealing with that kind of traffic. Its hard for me to justify putting all that traffic on one server. Just food for thought. Depending on how many calls you want to risk losing at any given time, your machine specs might be much lower than expected. Brian Foster Endigo Computer LLC Sent from a mobile device. I hijack (a bit) this thread: with much lower needs than Alex (let's say for an average size SME's PBX), shall FS perform well on a machine that is already a svr for other things (lets says, e-mail, IM, files (samba), etc, or does it need to be on a stand alone? (in any case w/ its own Ethernet I/F) JY -- When the shit hits the fan, keep your mouth shut!
I would never share roles with voip. Unless you are running a 2 line office ;) Sent from my iPhone 4S On Jun 21, 2012, at 9:48 AM, Bzzz <lazyvirus@gmx.com> wrote:

Having multiple roles/applications on the same server is forced necessity unless you have enouph boxes. Since we had deployed virtual infrastructure no one ever wanted to set up multi-purpose servers. Nevertheless, heavy-duty servers reside on physical, not virtual boxes. They are dedicated servers though. On 21/06/12 16:54, Robert-IPhone wrote:

To clarify: FreeSWITCH doesn't need so much resources such that it needs to run standalone. However, as with virtualization... voip calls are meant to be real time and require real time processing. E.g. if you're running a ptime of 20 (the norm, it seems) that means there are 50 packets for each channel each second. Therefore, if the machine is busy for just 20ms and FS can't process that packet (on every channel!), stuff starts to happen. So running standalone it's more about rock-solid stability rather than just having, on average, enough CPU. -Avi On Thu, Jun 21, 2012 at 4:54 PM, Robert-IPhone <rhuddleston@gmail.com>wrote:

There are some things you can do to keep FreeSWITCH as the machines highest priority but that's probably outside of the scope of this discussion. Brian Foster Endigo Computer LLC Sent from a mobile device. On Jun 21, 2012 10:22 AM, "Avi Marcus" <avi@avimarcus.net> wrote:
