Dear all: I have some questions about the G729 codec. I will be appreciated if someone could help me. 1. If I want to modify the G729 codec, I must compile the module and substitute for the original one. Is it correct? 2. It seems that there is an authentication server for G729. Should I need authentication when I use the modified G729 codec? 3. If I want to add my codec which is not in core, how to do it? Thanks for helping.

If you're using a naughty codec you'll be on your own, the official FreeSWITCH G729 codec is highly optimized and comes with patent indemnity.
3. If I want to add my codec which is not in core, how to do it?
You create a codec module just like any of the other codec examples in tree. Using any other codec other then the official G729 and NOT paying for the patent royalties is illegal in just about every country on the planet. /b
Thanks for helping.
Not only that, the naughty codec takes around 7% CPU for a single call, whereas, the FreeSwitch codec is optimized to handled closer to 1000 calls on a Quad Core Xeon. Regards HASSAN On Fri, Sep 24, 2010 at 19:50, Brian West <brian@freeswitch.org> wrote:

NO NO NO NO it won't. Just because it's from the ITU does NOT mean it's licensed. It is not legal to use it unless you've obtained licenses in some way, which is extremely unlikely. It will not replace mod_g729 and it is less optimised than mod_com_g729. You have to buy licenses anyway, you may as well buy them from us and get our codec which is included. We worked for several years to bring this service to the community and I do not appreciate this discussion. If FreeSWITCH being free is not enough for you and you have to try to illegally use G729, maybe you could find some other retched hive of scum and villainy to discuss it in. We will certainly do everything we can to make those reference implementations not work in FreeSWITCH and it appalling that someone will put the effort in how to learn to make FreeSWITCH code just to hack in G729 and not donate their time to a more useful cause in the project. Anyone continuing to comment on this thread will be moderated. On Wed, Sep 29, 2010 at 9:36 AM, mazilo <Nabble@slickdeals.endjunk.com> wrote:

I completely agree with BKW and Anthm. In fact I was also trying out this naughty codec from github for trans coding on a development machine. I think that codec sucks big time, as not only it consumed resources, but it cannot handle different ptime implementations of g729. Not only, it is stealing from such a lovely project if you use this in production, its also a total waste of time even in testing for your own purpose, coz it wont let you test anything and you will end up wasting your time. Instead a simpler solution is to buy g729 1-2 licenses to test stuff, and purchase more if needed. Anthm, would be great if that stupid codec can be stopped from working with FS. I hate it personally. wasted one month of mine testing for quality, when shit was inside g729 codec. Dear all:
I have some questions about the G729 codec. I will be appreciated if someone could help me.
1. If I want to modify the G729 codec, I must compile the module and substitute for the original one. Is it correct?
What's wrong with the existing codec?
2. It seems that there is an authentication server for G729. Should I need authentication when I use the modified G729 codec?
Legally G.729 must have a licence. mod_g729 doesn't support transcoding (passthrough only) so has no need for a license. mod_com_g729 does though, and that one requires a license server to tell it how many licenses are available. The sourcecode for mod_g729 is available but for obvious reasons mod_com_g729 is not.
3. If I want to add my codec which is not in core, how to do it?
- Copy src/mod/mod_skel_codec to src/mod/codecs/mod_mycodec - Add codecs/mod_mycodec to modules.conf (which won't exist until after you bootstrap and configure) mod_skel_codec shows you the basic interface for creating a codec plugin. Check http://docs.freeswitch.org/ for API documentation and the existing codecs for examples of how to write a codec.
Thanks for helping.
