Hello For those SOHO customers (ie. at most, a couple of POTS/ISDN connections and simultaneous SIP calls) who'd rather not use a big, noisy PC to run Freeswitch, I'd like to offer an alternative that has the following features: - not old hardware sold on eBay, ie. it must be up-to-date hardware sold by a company currently in business - compact, silent - has room for a 2.5" hard-disk, but if not, must provide a CompactFlash plug - ideally, room for a PCI card, possibly laid down with a riser to save space - total cost (shipping + VAT) < 200 euro If it's cheaper and not much work, I don't mind buying the parts and putting the box together myself, but otherwise, I'd rather order a complete box, ready-to-use. What are my options to provide customers with that kind of solution? Thank you for any hint. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Compact%2C-fanless-appliance--tp23193738p23193738.html Sent from the Freeswitch-users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Interesting :-) Thanks for the pointer. I think it'd be very useful if the wiki included a list of devices that can run Freeswitch in addition to a regular PC, especially those that cost < $150. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Compact%2C-fanless-appliance--tp23193738p23213493.html Sent from the Freeswitch-users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Here's a list of makers of basic routers per www.cheaprouter.us: 2Wire, 3Com, ADTRAN, Apple, Belkin, CNet, CP Technology, Cisco, Cisco Systems, Compaq, D-Link, Edimax, Efficient Networks, Hawking Technology, Hewlett-Packard, Linksys, Motorola, Netgear, Netopia, Nortel, SMC, TP-Link, TRENDnet, Zoom, ZyXel For those of you used to tinker with this type of basic hardware... 1. Can a non-expert go from opening the box to getting a Freeswitch server up and running without spending days figuring it out? 2. Are they fast enough for SOHO use (a couple of simultaneous SIP conversations + small LAMP web server)? 3. Do they offer a CompactFlash plug to provide a few gigabytes of storage before plugging an external drive? A perfect device is also the FitzBox 7270, which is very popular over here in Germany (more than 5 Mio Installations). http://www.avm.de/en/Produkte/FRITZBox/FRITZ_Box_Fon_WLAN_7270/index.php It offers - ISDN port - 2 analogue ports (perfect for fax) - DECT (GAP) for up to 6 devices - 4 LAN ports - WLAN draft n - USB port - and costs about 190 Euros incl. tax. It's Linux based and a number of extension have been built for this device, see http://www.wehavemorefun.de/fritzbox/index.php/Main_Page (unfortunately in German) If we could make it run with freeswitch + TLS/SRTP - wow! After giving it more thoughts, I got to the conclusion that I'd rather a stand-alone miniPC that can take a PCI card with a riser, instead of a really tiny box that relies on an external box to connect to a PSTN line. Mini-box offers a $120 kit that includes an Intel D945GCLF mobo and a pico-PSU. All it misses, is RAM and some mass storage. Does someone know if there's some kind of CompactFlash that can connect to an IDE port? That would save space + noise. Thanks for the tip. Any link where I could check this out? The cheapest PC's I find are > 230€ (Asus' EeePC), and with not enough room to stick a PCI card. Considering a Gigabyte GA-GC220 mobo sells for less than $50 retail + $60 for a PicoPSU, I'm surprised no one has come up with a mass-produced, CF-based $99 computer box :-/ That would be ideal to build a no-frill, virus-safe Linux box for web surfing... and a SOHO Freeswitch server. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Compact%2C-fanless-appliance--tp23193738p23364535.html Sent from the Freeswitch-users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Well actually a barebone with VIA C7 + 1 slot for PCI card (carefull you have to remove some metal part otherwise Sangoma/Digium card will not fit *LOL*) and external PSU are around 190/215€ for 1 pieces. If 800/1200 Mhz are enough for you its a good choice. This hardware has problem with old kernel (LAN freezes). For even smaller hardware you can check "Acrosser" that AFAIK produces motherboard for poker/casino game machine. Or check the super small ALIX motherboard (those one has MINI-PCI) and fit in something like a router-metal-box and you'll stay around 95/120€. but with like 400 Mhz i think.

Actually i dislike solution with only 1 internal PSU. As customer i will never purchase it because i know that at one point in time it will broke and i'll have the machine stopped for X hours of manteinances. With external PSU you can just plug in the new one. With 2 PSU you just need headspeakers to limit the soound from the PSU alarm noise :-P Also don't forget that if you're in europe and buy components and assemble them in a new product you have to make the "C.E." tests yourself (around 500/4000€) Antonio Gallo (agx)
Thanks Antonio for the links on Acrosser and PCEngines. It seems like PCE's alix1d is a good solution, provided 256MB is enough to hold Linux + Freeswitch + some tiny LAMP stack. Still, it looks like an Atom-included mobo like those from Asus or Gigabyte would be cheaper. The biggest issue is finding a case that allows for a PCI card + riser adapter that doesn't cost more than the mobo :-) -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Compact%2C-fanless-appliance--tp23193738p23366596.html Sent from the Freeswitch-users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

The biggest issue is finding a case that allows for a PCI card + riser adapter that doesn't cost more than the mobo :-)
Alix cases are like 6/9 € from their shop site. I think its easy to find someone who work with aluminium that can make for you custom boxes for like like 6/20 € at pcs. Since for them its just a fact of how much material is needed into the working process. If you cannot find any of this i know one that can make them in Bologna - Italy. Antonio Gallo (agx)

Unfortunately, none of the PCEngines cases (www.pcengines.ch/order1.php?c=2) allow for a PCI slot, either on top of the mobo, or away from it :-/ I'll see if I can get those from Soekris (http://soekris.eu/shop/cases_en/) allow this, and if I can get a good price for a case + PSU. I am thinking about using this combination as a router, should also be a nice platform for freeswitch http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/D945GSEJT/D945GSEJT-overv... http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/1058 http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/1087 energy efficient netbook chipset (most other boards use the desktop version), PCI slot, small case, fanless. you can put the system on an usb stick and just hide it behind the front panel. no need for reinstall on the device itself, just put in a another usb stick and you're good to go. or you put in two disks in raid1 for redundancy if you need the disk space. if you don't need PCI you can use this enclosure http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/1081 David Am 06.07.2009 um 01:21 schrieb Nandy Dagondon:
