it should be just session.getVariable

var base_dir = session.getVariable ("base_dir");

example taken from http://svn.freeswitch.org/svn/freeswitch/trunk/scripts/javascript/aadir/aadir.js

This of course assumes that you are running as an application and you have a session there.
