The ESL protocol is a good approach to get information out of freeswitch from a remote script. There are implementations in libs/esl fior various languages

No, you're looking at it the other way. Mod_curl is for getting data into freeswitch, not for getting out. As you've guessed you can just reach the API in a language of choice with the proper bindings. Python, lua, php, javascript - take a pick and start building your app.
