At what stage of the call do you want to send the update? I've found it can be set then will be sent to the phone on ring_ready, pre_answer or answer, but I don't know of a way to do it after the call has been answered.

If the id you're setting is being overridden by a display update from an upstream server, you can also set ignore_display_updates.
