Hi All, This is the page I'll be referencing: https://freeswitch.org/confluence/display/FREESWITCH/Using+ODBC+in+the+core I added the TOC tonight because it was quite messy, but after reading the page, it looks like some pruning could be done. Questions: Do we want to have the Ubuntu section as that's not the preferred distro? Do we want to reference Debian Squeeze as that's not the preferred platform? Same questions apply to Postgres 8.4 and CentOS5.2, both relics in today's world. I'm anxious to try Postgres with FreeSWITCH, but because the page is a bit outdated, I don't quite understand the process. I installed a couple of the packages mentioned at the top and made the files. I was then able to connect with the isql -v freeswitch command but I don't see any mention of Postgres in my config.log I do see this for odbc in the config.log: configure:19959: checking for odbc header in /usr/include configure:19984: checking for SQLDisconnect in -lodbc configure:20009: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 conftest.c -lodbc >&5 configure:20088: checking whether to include odbc config.status:1773: creating src/mod/event_handlers/mod_odbc_cdr/Makefile ac_cv_found_odbc=yes ac_cv_found_odbc_inc=yes ac_cv_lib_odbc_SQLDisconnect=yes ac_cv_odbc_where_inc=/usr/include ac_cv_odbc_where_lib=yes ODBC_LIB_FLAGS='-Wl,-lodbc' If we could come to an agreement on the few questions above about the old sections, I can work on changing it. Once I have a better understanding of postgres and freeswitch, I can also provide more concert documentation. I can not speak for core developers, but it's probably worthwhile to archive that page and create a new one with current information. I understand the push to get everybody to use the current release of everything, but not every installation can, so somebody might need those old instructions to rebuild an old system that can't be upgraded at the moment. Copy whatever parts are still useful to a new page and either add "deprecated" to the title of the old page or title the new page like "ODBC in the 1.6 core" or similar. There's a TON of old cruft in the wiki, some of which is useful, some of which is outdated. We said we would use the feature of Confluence to clone each instance to a new one when a new FS release comes out, but we haven't done that. If we did that, it would provide a snapshot for archival reference while the current live wiki marches on. I wouldn't do that without consensus from a bunch of people who are smarter than I because it has the potential to cause a lot of confusion. Bote

Yes, I like this. Hopefully that means maintaining it won't be too much of a hassle once we're at a current version of FS. As I said earlier, I'm willing to write up a page on odbc but I'll need some guidance on how to get it working. Right now I have both FS and postgres installed from master but I don't know how to have FS make the tables. I'll write the users list to see if I can get some input and use that to improve on the docs for odbc.
There's a TON of old cruft in the wiki, some of which is useful, some of which is outdated.
What's the best way to keep it from getting outdated? Just update it constantly with each release? Maybe some things don't need to be completely branch specific or OS specific that way it will stay relevant longer.

Documentation always seems to be the red-headed stepchild. Since this is a community project I think it's best to encourage those who wrote a module or are interested in a particular topic write about it. This has happened to some extent already. More would be better. As it is now, we're still struggling to finish migrating remaining pages from the old wiki to Confluence. We're about 70% complete I think. Then it's just up to documenting changes as they come in and editing out the old crap as we encounter it. I don't have a good answer, just hope that the good citizens of FreeSWITCH all lend a hand as needed. We could probably be more creative about encouraging participating in the docs project with sprints and doc-a-thons or the like. I'm not very creative, though. :-( Thanks. Bote
