[Freeswitch-dev] FreeSwitch Builds
All, The race conditions building Windows FreeSwitch on a multiprocessor or at least quad core was never fixed. But I had found that running the same build sequentially often appeared to work. Alas I have been grabbing the build multiple times daily for a month now and have never gotten VS2008 to build with out error. Yet since one never knows which revision last compiled properly for the Windows developers the trial and error method really proves nothing and I guess succeeded in the past only by luck. My last build which appeared to work was revision 9641 on 9/19/08. Is there anyway that the revisions of the sugcessful builds be noted or even better the successful windows builds be made available? Bob
Looks like you qualify for our "double-your-money-back" guarantee. Don't know about anyone else but your email sounds pretty ungrateful. You may want to read it again before you press send next time. Since you seem pretty knowledgeable about the problem maybe you could work on fixing the issue and contribute the fix back. On Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 10:58 AM, Robert Clayton <rjcajax@gmail.com> wrote:

I just built current trunk (rev 10140) with no problems. As we develop on many different platforms and compilers are not consistent in the rules they enforce there are often specific revisions that do not compile on one platform or another. We are constantly building on all the different platforms and its rare to have a total build failure on any one platform for more than a day. I am not aware of any race condition in the build. Is there a bug for this reported on the bug tracker at http://jira.freeswitch.org ? Mike On Oct 24, 2008, at 12:30 PM, Anthony Minessale wrote:

I also build on Windows w/VS2008 everyday and have for the last month or so and have only had a couple of minor problems(these are expected when working with the trunk) but overall very good results. There was a minor issue with the Windows build around SVN10088 see my previous post. Jeff Quoting Michael Jerris <mike@jerris.com>:

Thanks Michael. Judging from Mr. Minessale's remark I appeared insulting or at the least too demanding. No insult was intended. I was happy running two sequential builds to receive a result. But my best laid plan was providing to many unknowns. I know there are an endless number of build configurations maybe a posted weekly compiled build (VS2008?) would level the playing field. I will try to find a single processor machine and compare the results. P.S. Hot off the compiler. I just pulled rev 10141 on my quad using VS2008 the first run produced 91 errors and 155 warnings. The second run produced 0 errors and 0 warnings with: Build: 69 succeeded, 0 failed, 50 up-to-date, 6 skipped, About an hour earlier (and a previous build) I could not get past compiler errors in libaprutil, FreeSwitchCoreLib and mod_event_socket. But assuming sequential compiles create a valid result you responce has laid it's hands on the problem and it is healed. Bob On Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 12:39 PM, Michael Jerris <mike@jerris.com> wrote:

Did you take his advice and post the log of the build errors to Jira? *Hint* Mr Minessale gets extra angry when people still put sarcasm in their apology or explanation of how they were not being rude. However you want to look at it, you are complaining about a minor issue with free software that I spend up to 16 hours a day writing for you. Is a more polite choice of wording that much to ask? Aren't you impressed it even builds on windows at all? We don't have a box as nice as you that runs windows to expose the problem you mention so we can only rely on your input. 4 people now have explained in detail the steps you can take. Take it or leave it but, please, stop with the sarcasm. On Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 12:47 PM, Robert Clayton <rjcajax@gmail.com> wrote:

Mr. Minessale, If my multiprocessor problem is a "minor issue" then I see no need to pull anyone off more pressing tasks. I will find a single processor system to build on. And yes I am impressed that it builds on Windows. As far as sarcasm I think, as I stated, I can safely assume, due to your creation, that you are a better programmer than myself. Even though I would aspire to similar mastery, I continue to hold character more important than knowledge. Should I ever get a solid hold on FreeSwitch, God willing, I would be willing to attempt to assist you in lowering your incredible 16 hour workload. As far as my "nice box" due to medical reasons I have been unemployed for five years and other than my family it is one of the few nice things I have. It does build in the end right? If you can't get it to build ever we surely want to get it fixed ASAP. I am calling it a minor issue because I thought if you do the build command again after it fails that the rest of the code will eventually build. I'm not mocking your box, I seriously do not have any box that can reproduce your problem. I do most of my windows test builds on a virtual PC. There are a ton of other guys who help a lot on windows build. Carlos, one of our community members said he has seen the problem a few times so we will be asking him for help testing that. Please do not get the wrong idea, we wouldn't have an open source project if we did not intend to help people. I know the other guy makes fun of our IRC channel but we certainly get a lot done there with people doing non-stop wiki efforts and discussion and countless hours of beta testing. It's an excellent place to get acquainted with the project. On Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 4:45 PM, Robert Clayton <rjcajax@gmail.com> wrote:

Yet since one never knows which revision last compiled properly for the Windows developers the trial and error method really proves nothing and I guess succeeded in the past only by luck. My last build which appeared to work was revision 9641 on 9/19/08.
Is there anyway that the revisions of the sugcessful builds be noted or even better the successful windows builds be made available?
Bob

Yes it built today with rev. 10141 (of course, right after I wrote my concern) yet since 9/19 I have attempted it 2 to 4 times a day and had no success. Again I have been attempting it (XP, VS2008) on a quad and that may impose constraints that may not even appear on a dual processor. I will continue at least a daily build should it fail again I will attempt to contribute the necessary files. I will, again, attempt the IRC. Yet I have some physical limitations that make that difficult due to the real time sequential response inherent to allow recipients to trace to whom I am responding.

Thanks Michael. Judging from Mr. Minessale's remark I appeared insulting or at the least too demanding. No insult was intended. I was happy running two sequential builds to receive a result. I will try to find a single processor machine and compare the results.
P.S. Hot off the compiler. I just pulled rev 10141 on my quad using VS2008 the first run produced 91 errors and 155 warnings. The second run produced 0 errors and 0 warnings with:
Build: 69 succeeded, 0 failed, 50 up-to-date, 6 skipped,
About an hour earlier (and a previous build) I could not get past compiler errors in libaprutil, FreeSwitchCoreLib and mod_event_socket.
But assuming sequential compiles create a valid result you responce has laid it's hands on the problem and it is healed.

Well wouldn't the same idea work? Tell it not to build in parallel and/or set affinity depending on the bug? Thanks. I was recompiling often and was hoping to apply some power and save time. I should have been more detailed as my moving to a single processor system was not just for the build but to evaluate the performance on a system similar to the ones it will be deployed on. Mr. Minessale,
If my multiprocessor problem is a "minor issue" then I see no need to pull anyone off more pressing tasks.

Mike

Is there anyway that the revisions of the sugcessful builds be noted or even better the successful windows builds be made available?

Are you joking? C'mon? Really? You are going to troll the list again with all kinds of uppity remarks like that and say that I am venting or over-reacting when it pisses me off that you have a giant chip on your shoulder? You are the guy who was complaining that our documentation was not sufficient for you to show up and instantly write a private endpoint that you have no intention to share with anybody. And despite all that it only took you 3 days to get it working *with* our help on IRC. That was you right? The same guy everybody told me privately was being a jack-ass and wondered why I was still helping you? You have every right to write a private module but you could try to be a bit more polite asking for help i would say. Again, small price to pay. It's appropriate that you commented because yes, you were the last individual to do the same thing. To show up on the list bitching about stuff and then explain away your rudeness with more sarcasm and attitude. I eventually said ok, fine you didn't mean it rudely, whatever... So, i guess I was wrong unless you are going to try to claim this latest email is not also completely rude? Criticize the software all you want but every time anybody complains that we are not doing enough to suit their needs in this type of manner, I am going to respond the same way. For every one guy who barges in with guns blazing complaining about stuff there are 100 who are totally respectful. We simply do not condone entitlist attutudes here. Most other things we could care less about. Make fun of our IRC channel all you want but it's much easier to help people in a group that one at a time on the list all day long. Seriously, How do you expect me to not get annoyed when you more or less say I refuse to help people when some weeks I spend the entire day every day helping people? This guy you are spreading FUD about me too doesn't even have a real problem besides when he builds clean on windows he sometimes has to issue the command a second time to get it to work all the way, we asked him to file a bug report and to help us gather info. I can't understand some people. On Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 3:47 PM, Matthew Kaufman <matthew@matthew.at> wrote:

I apologize if it seems that way. FreeSwitch is an excellent project. I realize that you are a far more experienced programmer than myself and I will be more than happy to contribute but I first have to overcome the idiosyncrasies and learning curve. Probably many more than myself would also contribute and providing the valid Windows builds or at the least fully built revision numbers would be a great step in that direction. Not at all, That idea is fine, there are already people volunteering to maintain windows build. I suggested that you find these people and contribute to their efforts because that is how it gets done. When people who care about a certain aspect get together to work on improving areas they have an interest in. We do our best to keep everything in line but we are doing it all at once. It takes smaller volunteer groups to really sort things out. On Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 11:59 AM, Robert Clayton <rjcajax@gmail.com> wrote:

Robert, We appreciate your willingness to help out. Doing cross-platform work is no small feat and the differences between the various platform require the devs to jump through flaming hoops while juggling knives. I promise that they are all working extremely hard to make Windows builds work properly, so please don't take it personally if they take it personally, if you get my meaning. On to the issue at hand... your best bet would be to post a bug report on jira.freeswitch.org with all the relevant details. Be sure to include your exact Windows version, hardware type (32 vs. 64, e.g.), plus all the VS2008 errors you are seeing during the build process. Ideally, if you have a second machine that you could test on that would definitely help identify the source of the issue. Is it machine-specific? If you had a sandbox-type machine that you could tinker with that would really be great because you could do drastic things while troubleshooting. (Re-install Windows, use the freebie VS vs. full VS 2008, etc.) Since your time is also valuable it might be best if you post the bug on jira and then wait for assistance. In some cases the devs might want to remotely access your machine so that they can see the issue first hand. In other cases they will get half way through your well-documented bug report and know exactly what needs to be done. Hope this helps! Please hang in there - cross-platform growing pains are not fun but you'll be happy when you get past them. -MC
