[Freeswitch-dev] High Availability Communication Project #1
FreeSWITCHers, Project #1 we discussed at ClueCon 2015 is a complete working HA solution, The goal is to have meta packages that will install, configure and deploy various HA components with in a controlled environment. but not only plugging in FreeSWITCH, but OpenSIPS, Kamailio, Asterisk and any other telecom component, This project is ambitious, I would like to gauge the community interest and what level of involvement you would like to have in this project, I would like to invite any and all open source communication software to get involved. A complete centralized, configured, deployable solution for everyone to use. Interested? We can schedule a phone call to discuss this, what would be good times for everyone to get involved? Please reply... Thanks, -- *Brian West* brian@freeswitch.org *Twitter: @FreeSWITCH , @briankwest* http://www.freeswitchbook.com http://www.freeswitchcookbook.com Got Bugs? We’re also interested on the subject to some extent. We’ve decided to bail out on HA deployments because of the complexity and moving parts, specially when not using more than 2 machines where you have to failover not only FS but also Postgresql and whatnot. Our typical installation is a "large scale” PBX (say 1000 extensions?) where no customer is willing to put more than 2 identical machines and therefore, you’re stuck with active-active postgresql replication, floating ips and such. If this sort of scenario is on the target, I can get resources into the project as well but we will most certainly be on the learning end although would probably help us run extra miles where needed. Will be on the call, just let me know what time. João Mesquita On Tue, Aug 18, 2015 at 11:18 PM, Brian West <brian@freeswitch.org> wrote:

In our case, we didn't have the "two machines" requirement, but had the same 'didn't want to deal with services on the same box issue). We're using: Real Hardware: x-p1 / x-p2 (Keepalived for one floating IP for each of internal/external networks) - serves provisioning http(s), tftp, and FS itself Virtual Machines on another cluster (not jitter/drift sensitive): x-db-p1, x-db-p2, x-db-p3 (Percona XTraDB Cluster + keepalived for single floating IP) x-gfs-p1, x-gfs-p3, x-gfs-p3 (Glustre Filesystem) - only using this for a loosely consistent persistent store for voicemail, logs, etc. Could easily be merged with other instances. x-web-p1, x-web-p2 (end user accessible web, frontended with existing on-prem load balancer and ssl offload) The actual setup and resource requirements are quite low other than having a bunch of smaller VMs. -- Nathan On 08/18/2015 10:28 PM, João Mesquita wrote:

Not trying to go off topic here but I've been working with clustered setups in a test environment for a while. I had to implement my own code in order to "direct" transferred (SIP REFER) calls properly. I recently noticed this... - FS-7760 <http://ift.tt/1S4zIoz> [mod_sofia] Improved the xml fetch lookup for channels on nightmare transfer Which appears to be a solution to this problem. I haven't tested it yet but I'd love to see a demonstration of this feature and if it is what I think it is, it applies to FS in a clustered environment. With regard to a clustered setup of FS + Kamailio, I always thought a powerful implementation in freeswitch would be distributed message queue (dmq) to integrate into Kamailio's dmq feature. Then all the FreeSWITCH + Kamailio servers in a cluster could then be aware of user location, active calls and even hash table information. Call it something like mod_dmq ? it could have application calls which return user location data (sort of like sofia_contact()), this way, kamailio can be registrar and freeswitch could be aware of data in real-time. I know mod_ampq and/or mod_kazoo exists out there to integrate message queue using RabbitMQ but dmq doesn't require any additional software like RabbitMQ. If only I had more time to write such a module... or maybe by chance someone out there with powerful C skills is listening and will write it... Definitely not as fancy--I would consider both those methods borderline "hacks" or "work-arounds" Currently I have Kamailio act as registrar and store location information in postgres database. I have a custom freeswitch endpoint module which retreives & generates sofia dial-string from postgres location table. example: <action application="bridge" data="myfancymodule/1000@mydomain1.com"/> would generate equivalent of: <action application="bridge" data="sofia/internal/1000@8.7.6.4:1029 ;fs_path=mykamailio.server.ip:5060"/> I'd consider that a bit more elegant =] but still not as cool as dmq On Thu, Aug 27, 2015 at 8:30 AM, Giovanni Maruzzelli <gmaruzz@gmail.com> wrote:

I propose we start by fixing this document: https://freeswitch.org/confluence/display/FREESWITCH/High+Availability Here is a google doc we can start collecting notes into to fix this page: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Z9hm1yV1JXn41ds5LQBXd6R2d-dmMh23ZSANZleM... I've proposed 10AM Central tomorrow for our first meeting, we can have another later in the day if needed. Thanks, On Thu, Aug 27, 2015 at 7:49 AM, Vik Killa <vipkilla@gmail.com> wrote:

I'd consider that a bit more elegant =] but still not as cool as dmq

With regard to a clustered setup of FS + Kamailio, I always thought a
powerful implementation in freeswitch would be distributed message queue (dmq) to integrate into Kamailio's dmq feature.
I know is not as fancy as dmq, but for registration awareness you have two other techniques:
1) kamailio/opensips can propagate the registration packets to freeswitches
2) kamailio/opensips can write registrations in the same database table read by freeswitches
-giovanni
I know mod_ampq and/or mod_kazoo exists out there to integrate message queue using RabbitMQ but dmq doesn't require any additional software like RabbitMQ. If only I had more time to write such a module... or maybe by chance someone out there with powerful C skills is listening and will write it...

I haven't tested it yet but I'd love to see a demonstration of this feature and if it is what I think it is, it applies to FS in a clustered environment.

Hi, no talk about keeping calls alive during a failover, using sofia recovery functions? Back in 2010/2011 we did some experiments using corosync to sync profile status between 2 different freeswitch nodes, and recovering calls in case of a failover. this caused ip to be migrated and calls to continue. The work was part of a graduate thesis in telecommunication engineering. Since then we never "finalized" that code, even if it works(ed), mainly because it was of immediate interest/need. One of the major issue was if system A has 500 calls, in the event of failover, system B should be able to start 500 new calls in a very small timeframe (high cps!) If someone is interested into reading the code and see if can be somewhat useful, at least the idea, I'll try to pubish it somewhere (maybe github) Regards, Matteo
It's interesting for sure, please publish it, never let some work go forgot. Also, if you please, publish the PDF of doctoral thesis with it, perhaps (if you have time) with a little introduction in English. -giovanni On Thu, Aug 27, 2015 at 4:04 PM, Matteo <mbrancaleoni@voismart.it> wrote:

here we go: https://github.com/xadhoom/freeswitch-mod-cpg About the thesis, I need to find it, long time has passed :) The thesis describes the same approach, but was written in erlang, using the erlang internode communication. then we moved it to C, using corosync as the underlying "bus" and node manager. the released code is the latter. Hope can be of some interest, at least for the records. Matteo
Can you change the license on that to MPL or BSD or MIT to match FS. GPL code is not compatible with FS so your mod can't be licensed that way. Also please edit your G729 module to not include any names from my team. We don't endorse that. We are legally not allowed to. Well, the code was not licensed, so any is ok for me. I'll use the same FS license. About the bc729, is just a wrapper for an existing opensource lib, pretty dead too but should work. I'll remove the names if you like, even if the code is a minor adaptation of existing fs codec modules not written by me :) Matteo ----- Il 27-ago-15, alle 17:42, Anthony Minessale anthony.minessale@gmail.com ha scritto:
