Thanks everyone.  I spun up another virtual machine with an exact snapshot of this one.  It worked (works) perfectly.  This was NOT a FS problem, except the 77GB log file!

I would look in the logs.  Also, one thing you can try is to do the commands by hand and if there is a -nc, take it out of the start of freeswitch, then you can probably tell what happened.
